@#$%^&* Mute Swans

Last evening I was out working my pooch (Large Munsterlander) on her water retrieves. She loves it, and is one of those pooches that will dive down to get retrieves off the bottom in up to 5-6' of water if it's clear enough to see.
I kept shooting the dummy further and further out. Then when she was well out from shore a large Mute Swan that was 175 yards or so down the shore decided he had had enough. Ha flapped/ran on top of the water right to her and tried to get on her back when she came up with the sinking dummy. It was pecking at her head. She got frantic and dropped the dummy and made a beeline for shore, the swan in hot pursuit, pecking at her all the way. All I had with me that I could reach out and touch the swan with at that distance was a little 9mm Sig P938. Not going to even try that.
Then the dog got in range of my throwing arm, and I chucked some rocks at the swan, but it was intent upon harming my dog until I managed on the third try to hit the swan with a rock. The rock didn't hurt it but it ceased the attack.
Didn't even try to get my baby to go back and get the dummy. Heading out this morning for a little swim, I hope he didn't scare her to the point she doesn't like water work any more.
