Probably get tons of different replies.
One reply would be that you can pick your specific days and be pretty comfortable in a decent sized 16 footer. Unfortunatley, picking the days doesn't work out well as weather can come up quick. I think most of us have become junior meteorologist!
For me, I like a 17.5 footer to 18.5 footer. Deep V with a walk through windshield. Handles the 3 to 4 footers without issue if need be but can still fish comfortable on the rivers and some lakes (not all).
Fishing the bay in the summer can be all over the place. Many guys make runs to places while others stick close to shore and do just as well. You don't always have to go a long ways to find the fish, have fun, and put them in the boat. Most of my bay fishing is done within 5 miles of shore and I usually don't have much problem putting limits of fish over the rails.
