Calling all perch gurus

I took my son over to the spillway and noticed all the guys were using some sort of perch spreader. I never really fish tight line style, so i dont carry spreaders In my bag. So i rigged up a drop shot setup for my son with a minnow, and he did really well. My question, do any of you perch gurus still use spreaders with 20 or 30lb test. Is all that jewelry (beads, spinners) necessary on those spreaders? Also, my son being young missed some fish on the hook set, do you think a circle hook...
