Look on youtube for videos about making traps out of hardware cloth. You want them to be cheap enough that if someone steals/trashes them, you're not out a lot of money. You're going to want to put traps anywhere that's fishy, lots of rocks, etc. One of the best tips I've read/seen is to use 50 lbs test CLEAR mono as your handline, and a water bottle, gatorade bottle, or pop bottle to mark where the handline ends. Be sure to pull the label off, especially if you use a pop bottle; so folks don't pull the bottle for the deposit. Also, not having a label makes the bottle clear, and just that much harder to see.
Once you find an area that hold good numbers, you'll probably want to put out several traps to maximize your catch.
Last year I tried several areas with NO luck with my traps. I did manage to catch five craws on my last attempt, with one of my boys. I had my trap out, but didn't catch anything. We caught our craws by putting a small chicken heart on a heavy jig, and just dangling the jig from a pole just upstream of a rock. If there was a craw under that rock, they would usually pounce on the chicken within seconds. I need to try that trick in some lakes that have seawalls at public access points. They like to get into the spaces where the pieces of metal meet.
