Lab needs a new home

Hopefully someone out there can help us out with this.
We are currently in possession of a 4 year old chocolate Lab, pure bread, neutered male. I do not have any papers or knowledge of parents. His name is Bailey.
My best friends father in law owned the dog until last October. He got the dog as a puppy but he has been steadily declining mentally and he had to be put into an adult foster home.
I told my friend we would take care of the dog while they sorted out his father in laws affairs.
When we got Bailey he was overweight and seemed to have some quirky behaviors. We took him to a vet and he was given a clean bill of health except for the weight. All shots at up to date. We put him on a suitable diet and he is now lean and energetic.
He has what is called a "submissive smile" When he greets people he "smiles" and bares his teeth. Kind of strange until you get used to it. He also seems to have been abused at some point because he can get defensive and has growled and snapped at all members of our family except for my wife.
I am not going to sugar coat it. Unlike typical labs this dog is not going to be good with kids.
We have a 8 year old yellow lab female and Bailey gets along great with her.
Bottom line is my wife is not comfortable keeping the dog around the kids and wants me to find alternate arrangements. We consulted a dog behaviorist and she said with the right amount of attention and training with the right person he could be a great dog. The problem is with already owing a dog and in our current situation we don't have the time to dedicate to it.
For the good side, 99% of the time he is a great dog. Loves attention, loves to play, well behaved, doesn't chew or have any other destructive behaviors. He will climb right in your lap on the couch and fall asleep if you let him. He thinks he is a lap dog. I know the potential is there so I would hate to have to take him to a shelter so I thought I would throw it out here first.
This dog is free for whoever wants to take him. Please contact me by IM here and set up a time to talk.
