Leaving loaded pistol in vehicle

How common is it for people with a CPL to leave loaded pistols in there vehicles? Maybe a gun free zone or whatever the case may be. What are the laws regarding that topic? Have to be locked in a box? Unloaded?
Talked to a friend about it and we disagreed. Looking to find the right answer.
