Who else has beaver fever with these temps??

I'm sure most will not have this issue but a newbie might. DNR press release.

If you don't buy a 2016 base license by Feb. 28, you cannot buy a fur harvester license in March or April.

Trapping

Feb. 28, 2017 is the last day to purchase a 2016 base license! A 2016 base license is required to purchase a 2016 fur harvester license.
All those who hunt and trap furbearing animals must have a valid base license and fur harvester license.
If fur takers do not purchase their 2016 base license by Feb. 28, 2017, they cannot purchase a fur harvester license in the months of March or April.
Base and fur harvester licenses can be purchased at license agents, DNR Customer Service Centers, or online at E-License.
2016 fur harvester licenses expire on April 30, 2017.
Learn about other important changes for fur harvesters during the 2016 seasons by visiting mi.gov/trapping or see the 2016 Michigan Hunting and Trapping Digest found online at mi.gov/dnrdigests.

Switchgrass help

I tend to agree with BigAl06. Normally I would prep for a year for a perennial food plot, but I think frost seeding this year is a good idea.

It is important that the switchgrass seed gets ground contact depending on the thatch that is there now. If the thatch is heavy, perhaps you could run a spike harrow over it after frost seeding.

I think the year jump on doing it is worth the risk. Because it is going to take three years for it to be tall and screen.

I frost seeded into a heavy fall planting of winter wheat about six years ago. And I went like 10 lbs. per acre of seed. That's way too thick for most habitat word, but I wanted a dead zone screen and it turned out great. I killed the winter wheat that was pretty thick in May. I didn't put simizine down the first year and had a ton of foxtail cool season grasses the first year which I mowed high with a flail mower the first season.

Here is a post with pictures of how thick the winter wheat was:

15" wide spread rule over APR's?

Noted biologist and author says wildlife agencies lose credibility when defending compromises

Some highlights...

APRs [antler point restrictions] are a good example,” said Winand, who attended grad school at West Virginia University with Gary Alt, father of Pennsylvania’s deer management plan.

“Any 2-year-old [buck] will have a 15-inch inside spread. We know that,” he said. “We could save almost 99 percent of the 1½-year-old deer by setting a 15-inch minimum inside spread.

“But Gary was right in promoting the APRs — three or four points on one side — instead, because there was no way he was going to get the 15-inch rule passed.”

How deep into the sand?

IMHO, I would go with 4' total length, at a minimum, and set the foot peg at 18-24" for 2" PVC. Just my 2 cents. Again, I've found the 3/8" rebar helpful for me with all the rocks around, makes it easier to fit in between them and drive it down

HSUS Wants to Ban Fishing

Feb 02, 2017 06:43 pm
Are fish cute? You may recall a PETA anti-fishing campaign a few years ago attempting to rebrand fish as “sea kittens.” It was widely mocked. But picking up where PETA failed, expect the Humane Society of the United States to begin campaigning more aggressively against fishing and eating sushi.

The notorious HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle has acknowledged what PETA saw as the limitation in a campaign against fishing. In an interview, Pacelle agreed that the reason he didn’t campaign against fishing was because they weren’t “furry and cute.”

So HSUS is now adopting an intellectual approach. Over the past several months, Jonathan Balcombe, an HSUS employee, has been laying the groundwork for the idea that fish have personalities. Call it the “Little Nemo” strategy.

Balcombe is formerly with the so-called Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a vegan advocacy group with PETA ties and a checkered past. He was also with the failed Humane Society University (which wasn’t a real university), and is now with HSUS’s Institute for Science and Policy (at least partially a misnomer).

In June, Balcombe published What a Fish Knows, a book arguing that fish have sentience. And quietly, HSUS has begun offering papers on its website from Animal Sentience, which purports to be a scientific journal. On its website, you’ll find articles such as “Cognitive evidence of fish sentience,” “Are Animals Persons?,” and “Fish sentience and the precautionary principle.”

Behind all the academic-speak, let’s be clear what HSUS’s goals are: No more sushi. No more blackened salmon entrees. No more fishing for trout and bass in the local river with your family. “There isn’t any justification for eating a fish instead of chicken,” Balcombe declares.

To get an idea of Balcombe’s comrades-in-arms, we need only look at his Reddit AMA last month. When asked about why groups like HSUS aren’t as aggressive as PETA on fishing, he dodges the question. But he does hat-tip Paul Watson, the head of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Watson is an international fugitive, and a U.S. federal court has declared Sea Shepherd to be a pirate group. (Watson is also the subject of a hilarious South Park episode, “Whale Whores.”)

Balcombe is so far out of the mainstream that he compares eating meat to racism. From his blog:

The folks next door stopped in the other day to give us a tin of cookies as a Christmas offering. You couldn’t ask for more amicable, helpful neighbors. They also love animals, feeding the deer and squirrels and drawing flocks of wild birds with their ever-filled feeders. As we hugged and shook hands in greeting, we asked what their plans for Xmas were. Barb said they had been invited to a friend’s place where—and at this point she leaned in with a hushed and confiding tone—they would visit the homes of several prominent niggers and burn crosses on their front lawns.

Of course, I made up that last bit. Barb and Paul are not in the least bit racist. What Barb really said was that their friends had invited them over to have roast lamb. For me, that was just as jarring, if less surprising, than if she really had admitted to terrorizing black Americans.

He’s not alone in noxious analogies. HSUS food policy director Matt Prescott created a PETA campaign comparing modern farms to Nazi concentration camps (and he was accused by the Holocaust Museum of being dishonest, to boot).

Back to fishing. HSUS’s strategy is to anthropomorphize fish just as it does with other animals. Is it a harder lift? Sure. People still don’t view fish as particularly cute compared to charismatic megafauna. But make no mistake, HSUS will work to get rid of fishing any way it can.

Need advice on handguns?

Get a damn safe first and learn to be responsible in storing firearms.

As for the the girl, get her some TRAINING just because she has a gun it is NOT a saving grace.

Can she shoot?

Can she refrain from shooting when under pressure or getting spooked?

Can she function after the first shot in house and she looses all hearing?

Does she have it in her to kill someone or is she a Facebook queen?

She needs training FIRST then she will know what her gun needs are.

Stay out of her decision NOTHING worse than a man trying to buy panties or a purse or a gun and expecting their girl to like it, it just don't work that way.

Don't be a tight wad, get some training...

If you are tight you can always get a phone app for sounds of racking shotguns as some actually believe that scary sounds work for home defense..........

Michigan Chinook Salmon Stocking Location Options

In my opinion, the king returns have fallen so much that it's not worth planting anything less than 75K at one site, otherwise there's not even a fall fishery worth mentioning. And going to a rotating plant where a port gets planted every 2 or 3 years is going to be even more worthless.

What is the risk of not getting enough king eggs to hit the stocking goal using Medusa/LM weir? Hasn't the DNR had to go to alternate weirs outside of LM to fulfill egg quotas in the last 2 years? If the numbers are reduced even more, wouldn't that increase the risk substantially that there would be a shortage in chinook eggs in a year with a bad run? If a 150K plant is not getting enough kings to sustain the number of eggs we need to have, I think we should increase the plant in rivers that have egg take facilities.

I vote Option 1 because I think it would be better for consistently getting enough eggs, and I don't think a couple roving net pens is going to establish anything worthwhile or lasting in terms of a fall fishery. In the 2017 Option 4 example, St Joe's fall king fishery sucks with a 50K plant the last few years. And that's with 3 year classes coming back in any given year. One year of a 50K plant won't amount to a hill of beans. Same for Option 3, effectively cutting half of a crappy fall fishery is going to leave a worthless fall fishery.

Even though I fish St. Joe and South Haven a fair amount, I would rather have Option 1, to make sure we can reliably obtain chinook eggs to sustain the open-lake spring/summer fishery rather than take even a small risk of not getting enough eggs. How many chinooks even go thru Berrien Springs anymore? It can't be more than 1000

Lead shot ban - Federal lands....National Forests... Michigan

Surprised this hasn't been posted yet:

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe, an Obama appointee, ordered a new ammunition ban for certain federal lands on Thursday–his last full day in office.

The ban, which took effect immediately*, eliminates the use of lead-based ammunition on federal lands like national parks and wildlife refuges, as well as any other land administered bythe Fish and Wildlife Service. * The ban is expected to have a major impact on much of the hunting that takes place on federal lands across the United States as lead-based ammunition is widely legal and used throughout the country.

“Ingested lead pellets from shotgun shells have been a common source of lead poisoning in birds,” the order continued. “The Service recognized the problem of avian exposure to lead shot used for waterfowl hunting and enacted restrictions in 1991 and hunting and waterfowl populations have thrived since.”

“The use of lead ammunition continues for other forms of hunting, presenting an ongoing risk to upland or terrestrial migratory birds* and other species that ingest spent shot directly from the ground or as a result of predating or scavenging carcasses that have been killed with lead ammunition and left in the field” Ashe’s order said. “Many states have enacted nontoxic shot and ammunition requirements to address this concern.”

Currently waiting on ATF to approve a form 4 for a .45 caliber suppressor I purchased that is going on a break open .44 mag, (It won't be approved in time for this hunting season but next year it will). I am interested in this rifle though....I have the same one in a .300 whisper, it came threaded 5/8"-24 but that is probably a bit thin for a .45 caliber round. When to shed hunt?

"When to Shed Hunt?" Today ... February 22nd was a pretty good day for me. I actually just went up to this food plot to retrieve a camera. As I was walking along the edge of the field I saw one of the spike sheds. When I reached over to pick it up, I saw the other side laying about 15-20 feet away. Looked around a little more and found the other 3.

These were all found in one of my 1/2 acre sugar beet plots. There is still some snow and ice on the south end of it so there may be more when that melts. There is still too much snow and ice in the other sugar beet plot and the corn but I expect to find some there as well. This tops my best other find when my wife and I found 4 sheds in a 1/2 acre Power Plant plot several years ago.

None of these are likely to make B&C this year but it is nice to know they have made it through most of the winter:

Scanning with a light question

When scanning with a handheld light, what do you do in certain situations.
When scanning and you pick up an animal out if range, do you immediately shut off the light and hope it comes in closer? Do they sometimes spook off?

When scanning and you do have an animal in range, do you leave the light locked on it and hope to connect? Or do you shut off the light, collect yourself and try woth the gun mounted light?

My cousins aunt has them running around chasing rabbits in the evening we would like to try to kill a few.

Simcoe Trip March 9th-11th, worth going still?

Let's see your pole barn & man cave

Posted this on another forum the other day and thought it would be a good thread for the MS forum as well. It is always nice to see other peoples' ideas when it comes to their pole barns and man caves - something near and dear to Michigan's Deer Hunters.

Here is my pole barn in Upper Michigan. You will note on one of the closeups the name "Lone Oak". This is what we named our property after finding only a single large Red Oak on the entire 160 acres, which was somehow missed by loggers before we purchased the property in 1994:

Built the log cabin in 2000 and then the pole barn in 2003: After building the cabin, we never wanted to go home. We lived only 20 miles away and we started using the cabin more than we did our home. Finally, in 2003 we decided to sell the home in town and move out to the property so this is where we now hang our hats.

By 2011 we knew we needed more room so we added the lean-to, insulated the entire barn and started on the man cave inside:

Here is what it looked like as we were finishing up. It has a loft over the man cave for cold storage. The barn itself houses the farm tractor, no-till drill, snowmobile trailer and sleds, my truck, my wife's car, the Gator and ATV, etc. The majority of the implements are still parked outside but we have room for some in the lean-to as well.

The "buck pole" had moved from a tree...to the wood shed over the years but we wanted something a little more convenient as we aged. One of our camp members purchased an electric hoist and we moved it into the lean-to in 2012:

It seems there is always a lot of high level discussion going on in the man cave so it was appropriately named the "Situation Room":

It is an "L" shaped room which is 768 square feet. The long section is 12X40 with a 10' ceiling and the other portion is 12X24 with an 8' ceiling. We installed a new kitchen in the cabin a few years ago so we were able to move the old cabinets and appliances to the Sit Room. We can cook here if we want and we also finish off and bottle our maple syrup here:

We covered the concrete floor with rolled rubber flooring which you see in most of the community work out gyms. It serves us very well and is fairly easy to keep clean. I also installed an overhead track for hanging deer and other critters for skinning and processing in cold weather, and we have a stainless steel table below it.

The primary heat source is a Vermont Castings wood stove - circa 1970's but it does a great job of keeping the room warm - even too warm at times. We also installed an electric "milk house" type heater on the ceiling near the door which is thermostatically controlled to maintain some heat until we fire up the wood stove:

What would a man cave be without a reloading bench:

And a gun cleaning/shooting equipment bench:

My wife even has her own workbench for wood carving and other things. We finally added the large screen TV so we could check on football scores over cocktails as soon as we got in from our hunts.

Of course the room is loaded with photos, mounts and other trivia. The largest shoulder mounts and deer horn plaques are in the cabin but there are enough in the Situation Room to make it feel like hunting camp. Overall, I couldn't be happier.

Forgot to mention ... the original barn was 54' X 72' with 15' high walls tapered down to 11' on the west side. We added the lean-to which is 16' X 72'. We owned a large boat for our charter fishing business at the time so we built the barn big enough to house the boat. As it turned out, we always stored the boat in indoor heated storage near the marina so the boat was never stored here. We did store a large 5th wheel trailer with an A/C unit on the roof for a friend for a couple of years but other than that, we could have got by with a lower ceiling.

Let's see your pole barn & man cave

Oh my God.....

It's definitely concerning. From what I've seen and can recall, this winter is very similar to last, except more extreme at this early point. Last years was very up and down, but at least to this point in the winter, the warm ups were more brief. This weather could be very, very bad if it lasts for too long. The good news is like you guys said, it should cool down soon. It's hard for them to predict weather beyond 7 days, but hopefully the cooldown lasts. It's the back and forth temps that really ruin things, and it seems like when the winter follows those up and down trends, the spring usually does too. An early warmup with 80 degree dry days followed by frosts leaves Mother Nature pretty much screwed. I talked to a lot of people last year who've been doing this for decades, and they all said it was their worst season.

We have two months of winter left. If things stabilize, we get some snow on the ground, and it can last a while, this shouldn't turn out to have too much of an effect. We would just need a more gradual warm up the rest of the way. But I'm definitely worried about it. The way the winter has gone so far, it's hard to see it going back to normal for the next 2-3 months. But I sure hope so. I haven't been doing this as long as most of you, but last year was a tough one for me as well. I by far spent more time hunting than any year before, and still found less. I believe I only picked 100+ one day, out of probably 20+ days spent in the woods. My over all total was around 1050, which was better than a lot of people I talked to, but there were a lot of days where I found less than 50 in an entire day of hunting, and a couple days I got shut out, which hasn't happened since my first year. I won't have three weeks off again this year, so I can't afford such a slow pace. If this year is another repeat of that, I will be doing a lot more spring fishing I guess.

Either way, it is exciting to know that enjoying time spent in the fresh spring woods is only 3 months or so away. Hope everyone has a great season!

Oh my God.....

2017 Annual Culver's Walleye Thread

It's always good, not over cooked. Some might find it a little greasy and heavy on the batter.

It's an annual thing Culver's does every February for a limited time. It's been verified real walleye even by walleye Mike.

They have a three piece too for a couple more bucks.

Phrags on Saginaw Bay?

HUH???? Do you think "your government" has millions of extra dollars laying around to combat this crap? Are you willing to pay double for your license fees, or better yet...are you willing to DONATE a few thousand yourself to help with the costs? Think before you speak...."your government" did not create this problem. Nor did they create Asian carp, gobies, zebra or quagga mussels, etc.

The Hamster Wheel

This is Bella, she just turned 5 months old yesterday. I got her over the summer in while in Minnesota. Wow do they grow up fast!!

My camera is filled with dog pictures, mostly of her sleeping because that is when I can actually get a picture that's not a complete blur!! She is always on the move and up to something... She has been out in the woods hunting already, but no luck finding any birds
