Scanning with a light question

When scanning with a handheld light, what do you do in certain situations.
When scanning and you pick up an animal out if range, do you immediately shut off the light and hope it comes in closer? Do they sometimes spook off?

When scanning and you do have an animal in range, do you leave the light locked on it and hope to connect? Or do you shut off the light, collect yourself and try woth the gun mounted light?

My cousins aunt has them running around chasing rabbits in the evening we would like to try to kill a few.
