Small stream fishing

"Learning to cast with either arm comes in handy in tight stream too. I'm sure you've been there where all of the shrubbery is on your casting arm side."

Good advice above. I'd add that's it's sometimes viable, even advantageous to cast over your off shoulder. I don't fish dries (dead drift) often on small canopied water, it's more of a challenge than I'm usually up for. Streamers and wets though, now we are talking! The current, which is often troublesome with a dry, is now your ally.. swimming your fly right into the hot zones. With your cast set-up nice, it's perfect to swim/swing fly with spot on angles to fish holding structure like submerged wood and bend jams which will also (mostly) be at inherent downstream angles. Bank hop when able is best but wading with a studied eye can negate much of the downstream drift your feet create.

Back to which arm / shoulder to cast from.. I like my delivery to touch down with an innate downstream even 'bow' in line and leader. It provides instant tension and your fly is swimming nicely on imediate. Which arm / shoulder cast from is huge influence on achieving this.

Rods I like and use are 6'6" - 7' 2wt - 5wt. with nice even progressive action. If you ever wanted a reason to fish glass THIS is it. Run leader shorter than 9' matching the rod or even a bit less has worked well for me. As mentioned prior, roll or some type of spey* cast is going to be best around 85% of the time.

*Spey cast is just a water borne roll (cast) with some change of direction. Not to difficult to get a quick feel for, especially with shorter range use.

Nope, just stating reality. It may be a monopoly, but it is short lived.

It is a good option for last year's deer hunting. It is a bet on the future, one way or the other, to buy one before the legalities are finalized.
But, I cant say Im not guilty of such. Found a new Tikka stainless at a price less than the Ruger Americans. It could very well be legal this year.
Nope. Dont have a Savage rifle. Never did. Had a 220 slug for a while. Good gun, but found better options.

Fly Reels

Good thread. I cant stand a click and pawl reel, doesnt matter who it was made by, its just annoying. I think the best feeling, best sounding, smoothest reel are the old 60`s Battenkill disc drag made in England. Ive got a few of them, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, 8/9 and one 10/11. All in perfect condition and am impressed with each one. The feel, sound and the precision is a thing of beauty. They made and sold tons of these reels and for good reason.

I did have a couple of each of those but I sold a few off and got a few of the discontinued Hydros reels that cost a bunch more, because I liked the gold color and the large arbor and the design which I like way more than the Mirage reels that cost even more. I do not care for the new Hydros at all, I think Orvis blew it on that reel, and Ive heard comments like mine from others. I`m not impressed with any of the reels Orvis is putting out any more.

On the older Hyros reels, (made in China BTW) they are kinda big and bulky, and they have to be to hold any line. The V size for 10 wt is huge. As it is, they only hold the line and half the backing of the old Battenkills in the same size reel. The gold reels are flashy and do look good, but they are somewhat louder then the Battenkill, the drags are incredible, but they do not have the precision of the Battenkill, and the first batch people did not like the fact that the backing could get through the gap between the spool and the body. I have not had any problems with that myself. I like how the spool is designed to allow plenty of air to get to the line and backing. Over all I like these reels, but I`m sure in the future I will rekinder the feeling I had when I got that first old Battenkill and was so impressed with it and just be sorry I spent all that money on the Hydros reels

15" wide spread rule over APR's?

Noted biologist and author says wildlife agencies lose credibility when defending compromises

Some highlights...

APRs [antler point restrictions] are a good example,” said Winand, who attended grad school at West Virginia University with Gary Alt, father of Pennsylvania’s deer management plan.

“Any 2-year-old [buck] will have a 15-inch inside spread. We know that,” he said. “We could save almost 99 percent of the 1½-year-old deer by setting a 15-inch minimum inside spread.

“But Gary was right in promoting the APRs — three or four points on one side — instead, because there was no way he was going to get the 15-inch rule passed.”
