New Ouya Console Gets Updated Controller, More Storage

We first talked about the Ouya game console back in 2012. That console first turned up on Kickstarter seeking the money to bring the Android games you like to the big screen in the living room. A few years and a lot of pledges later, the Ouya console has been available to gamers for a while now.

ouya 960 620x348magnify

Ouya has been criticized for controller lag issues in the past and has announced a new version of the console to address some of the complaints. Ouya says that the new version of the console has a “refined” controller. We don’t know what that means, there is no clear indication of what exactly was refined.

The new version of the Ouya also gets 16GB of storage, improved Wi-Fi, and new firmware. The new version of the Ouya is available for $129(USD). The standard version is still offered for $99 with 8GB of storage. It’s unclear if the controller refinement will eventually come to the 8GB version.

LEGO Bioshock Infinite Motorized Patriot: Comstock’s Brick Men

This LEGO model of the Motorized Patriot from Bioshock Infinite is a testament to the technical prowess and power of Carl Merriam. He made it as part of his Iron Builder battle with Pepa Quin, who if I remember correctly is another famous and talented LEGO enthusiast.

Mark One 3D Printer Can Print with Carbon Fiber: Pencil 2.0

We know that 3D printers can print objects out of plastic, food, animal tissue and metal. Now a company called Mark Forged claims that its upcoming Mark One 3D printer can print using carbon fiber, the wonder material known for its high strength-to-weight ratio and cool looks. Something tells me this printer will hit a high money-to-ink ratio as well.

mark one carbon fiber 3d printer by mark forged 620x352magnify

The Mark One can print objects with carbon fiber at up to 200 microns thick. It can also print using PLA, fiberglass and nylon at up to 100 microns, so you can make objects mainly out of those cheaper materials then reinforce or decorate them a bit with carbon fiber. You can check out the printer’s other specifications on Mark Forged’s website.

The Mark One will be available this March for $5,000 (USD). Some of Gizmag’s commenters have two major criticisms about the Mark One though. First is that you can already buy carbon fiber-reinforced PLA filament. Which means you can start printing carbon fiber objects now and with your existing 3D printer.

The second criticism is that although carbon fiber is strong in itself, in high-end applications the material is molded – i.e. the fibers are aligned and woven – in ways that maximize certain properties, one of which is strength. In other words, a 3D printed carbon fiber object may not turn out to be as strong or durable as other carbon fiber products.

For my part, I’m worried that future customers will be able to buy the Mark One’s carbon fiber filament only from Mark Forged. And also that folks are more excited about this than the one that prints pizza. Folks. THIS ONE PRINTS PIZZA. Why is that not receiving funding from all living organisms in the universe?

Krang Belt Buckle: Waist Clan

Villain in a buckle, alien power! Let the disembodied villain use you as his exo-suit. Freakshop proprietor Christopher Genovese made this awesome oversized belt buckle featuring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle’s sworn enemy. I’m not sure how large the buckle is exactly, but it’s probably as large as a child’s head.

Christopher made the buckle out of urethane resin. Then he painted it by hand and finished it with a polyurethane clear coat.

Christopher can also add a mount to Krang if you’d rather hang him on a wall, but unless you have a person hanging on your wall, what fun is that?

Activate the Technodrome and head to Freakshop to order the buckle. It costs $190 (USD) and is made to order, so give Christoper one to three weeks to make you one.

NAX 2.0 Can Slice and Dice Zombies and Still Open Your Beer

ThinkGeek is intent on getting us all ready for the zombie apocalypse. They will sell you the Crovel or Crovel II which will certainly come in handy to take on the zombie hoard. A new tool has turned up that looks even more impressive than the Crovel, called the NAX 2.0.

nax 2 1magnify

The NAX 2.0 is a multitool that can function as a hatchet, machete, and a kukuri knife. I don’t know what that last one is, but it sounds really cool. The handle of the NAX 2.0 can be used as a pry bar so you can open any wood crates of Twinkies you might run across.

nax 2 2magnify

The handle also has a bottle opener, which is key to surviving the zombie apocalypse. Few things are worse than running across the last beer in the world and not having a bottle opener. The handle also has a gas shut off wrench, I guess that will help to burn up some zombies or cook Ramen soup to enjoy with your beer. Plus, the handle is wrapped in 550 paracord, which is perfect for setting booby traps and strangling the undead.

The Nax 2.0 is available from ThinkGeek for $149.99(USD).

Watch the LEGO Simpsons House Being Built

Fans have been waiting for the first LEGO Simpsons set and now you can watch it being built. It’s an expensive set, so maybe this is the next best thing to owning it.

Mike, also known as “Bricks Nerd” got his hands on the LEGO Simpsons House and is sharing some videos of the set being constructed. This isn’t just a simple project either since this $200 set features 2,532 pieces in all. The speed-build video is about six minutes-long and there is also an 18-minute video that is basically a review of the set.

They are definitely worth watching if you are thinking about buying this set.

Bacon, Coffee and Whiskey Soaps for Hipster Germophobes

If you are as big a fan of crispy, crunchy bacon as I am all you will need to hear is this- Bacon Soap. If you need a bit more explanation, here it is. ThinkGeek has some hand soaps in bars that smell like manly food and drink. The hand soaps are available in three scents; the bacon scent we have seen before.

Made by Outlaw Soaps, the set of three scents include bacon, coffee, and whiskey. I can get behind the bacon-scented soap, it even looks like bacon with the red and white marbling. The coffee soap makes sense too, while I hate the taste of coffee, it smells pretty good.

The whiskey soap is the questionable one to me. I can only imagine explaining to a cop that pulls you over and smells whiskey that you just took a bath.

Yes, This Is an HDTV

If there’s one thing that today’s flat-screen TVs have led to is a lack of the sort of unique designs that CRTs used to offer. I suppose this is a good thing, as HDTVs are designed to focus our attention on the image itself. That said, if you’re looking for a TV that looks different than all the others, check out this retro-style set from Seiki.

retro hdtv 1 620x631magnify

The bright red Seiki Digital SE22FR01 set is a full 1080p, 22-inch display, but it looks like an old TV from the late 1960s or early 1970s. The set offers all the modern conveniences, including inputs for HDMI, component, composite and VGA devices, and a remote control. And since the display has a chubby case, it’s got room inside for a better speaker than typical small HDTVs, with a built in 20-watt Yamaha subwoofer. Naturally, it’s got an old-school power switch and a volume dial.

RumbleRail Floppy Disk Jukebox: Diskman 8.0

I’m sure you’ve seen videos of floppy disk drives rigged to play music. Simon Schoar took the hack to the next level with RumbleRail, a modular floppy jukebox that plays MIDI files loaded to its SD card slot. It’s run by an ATMega microcontroller, has a 128 x 64 LCD display and two RGB LEDs for each drive that light up in sync with the music. All of its parts are neatly arranged on a machined aluminum rail.

According to Simon, depending on the file extension of the selected MIDI files, RumbleRail will either map MIDI tracks to the drives, map MIDI channels to the drives or just play as many notes as possible at once. Here’s the RumbleRail playing the Pirates of the Caribbean theme song:

And here it is playing the Ghostbusters theme song in the dark, because it ain’t afraid of no ghost:

They sound like highly organized mosquitoes. Fire up Lynx and head to Simon’s website to find out how you can build your own RumbleRail.

Family Size Sleeping Bag Doubles As Jumbo-Sized Dutch Oven

The family that sleeps in a giant sleeping bag together… is just weird. Regardless, this sleeping bag is big enough to fit your family inside. It’s great for unexpected emergency situations like if you’ve lost your house or something, but otherwise you are just going to drive each other crazy, hitting each other with your elbows and whatnot.

family sleeping bag 620x372magnify

This sleeping bag is made from 100% Polyester and you can unzip the bag from the bottom up to allow increased airflow. Speaking of airflow, just a little warning. Do not use this thing as a family on taco night.

After you spend some time trapped in a nightmare cocoon with your them, you won’t even want to be a part of the family anymore. So enjoy it while it lasts.

Chainmaille Necktie: for Knights of the Cubic Cubicle

Defend yourself from sword strikes and shark bites in the office with Thinkgeek’s Chainmaille Mail Necktie. It’s made of anodized aluminum, so I guess it will offer some sort of protection from corporate get-togethers.

The funny thing is, it’s the necktie part that isn’t genuine. I think it’s more of a choker with a huge pendant.

Ride to ThinkGeek and get the Chainmaille Necktie for $30 (USD). I’ll wait for the plate necktie.
