Holland Pier/channel

Hey guys,

Anyone been out to the Holland channel and or pier this week yet? I am planning on either Friday/Saturday/Sunday evenings this weekend, and I was curious what is biting if anything.

Thanks

Pellets found in Bird

This was the first year I've found pellets from a previous shot in a turkey. I was using Win XR and took him high in the neck/head. While cleaning I found several copper plated shot in the off side of my shot under the skin beneath the wing, only a couple that had penetrated the breast. There was no fresh sign of being shot, so it was at least last fall I would guess that someone shot him.

How many others have found someone else's shot in the bird they killed? Just curious.

Frostbite Tom?

My son shot a turkey today & it was in real bad shape. Is this frostbite or is something else wrong with it.

Any good recipes?

Looking for some good turkey recipes if anyone has any suggestions. I just breasted the bird out, tried cooking one whole a few years ago and it turned out okay, not great though. Any suggestions, was looking at trying a few slow cooker recipes. Thanks!

UP Reports

Many of the inland lakes are still ice covered as is the access to many boat launches on the great lakes. Smelt are slow but there are some Lake Superior reports coming in of smelt being caught. Steelhead are slow showing up in the rivers as well. Many rivers are high and muddy from the runoff and that will cause some of the steelhead to remain in the lake or make a run way up stream looking for clearer water. I hope this helps. Water temps are about 40 degrees so if the smelt run at 42 degrees get ready to go.

MOMC Spring Walleye Classic results

Thank you to the 36 walleye teams that joined us at the DYC for the 7th annual Spring Walleye Classic. There was a tough bite with swirling winds and muddy waters on Sunday.

A big thank you to the organizers and boat inspectors at this event. It could not be done without these guys; Joel Piatek (Chairman), Eric Woodhouse, Lance Koester, Jim Schiller (stay away from the donuts Jim!), Tim Ardnowski, Mark Nowicki, Kurt Nowicki, Russ Pillette, and The DYC for their great food, service, and facilities.

The results were as follows:

1st Place Team Heatwave Charters led by Capt. Craig Miller 35.80 lbs

2nd Place Team Fish Headz Charters led by Capt. Joel Piatek 26.20 lbs

3rd Place Team Medicine Man Charters led by Capt. Ed Pascua 21.75 lbs

We were very happy to see many big fish put back into the system by some great anglers and sportsmen who believe in conserving such a great fishery.

Casting 04/27/14

1st time out after the LONG winter. I went down for about 2 hours...not a bite. It was definitely nice getting out and getting a line wet though. I think it still may be a bit early up here in the North part of the river. Water was clear and there were plenty of bait fish in the water, but it was tough getting any distance casting into that North East wind. I think in another 2 weeks the 'eyes will be zooming up here. I am itching though..the freezer is empty.

Fished midnight on opener from mid-night till 5am and caught 5 fish. Caught 10 the next 2 hours. All trolling 130' back with various Rapaplas on lower Tibb River. Plenty of boats. 15 fish bY 7am!

Day 2 started at 5am and caught our 15 fish trolling #5 shad raps in firetiger and had limit by 9am. Have my "legal" possession limit. Time to eat some.

Cbm

Has anyone had their turkey measured for CBM? I was looking at their website and it looks like you just measure the beard both spurs and add them together, they have to add up to 12" to qualify? My son killed a tom this morning that had an 11 3/8" beard and 1" and 1 1/8" spurs. This should give him a score of 13 4/8"? Is this correct?

Newly Proposed Rule Changes

What options do we have?

Need some opinions on what to do tomorrow. Little boat is in the shop and the wind looks a little iffy for the bay for the bigger boat. The bigger boat has an I/O with an engine mount electric. What can we do on the river with very little boat control on that boat and not being in anyone's way? Have not fished the river much on soft water so any ideas would be great. It's a 20 foot alum. Boat so not a huge boat. Thanks

GLSDA at The Ringneck Ranch, 05/10

The first Great Lake Sport Dog Hunt Test of 2014 is just a few weeks away, and is being held at The Ringneck Ranch in Hanover, MI. The fine people of ‘The Ranch’ has opened their grounds to GLSDA and allowing us to run our event at one of the finest Preserves in Southern Michigan. If last year is any representation, we are expecting a nice turnout with lots of fine dog work in the fields and plenty of room to train.

As many know, Great Lakes Sport Dog is a self-funded, non-profit Organization in the State of Michigan that conducts fun Hunt Test Scenarios, Training opportunities and social gatherings to bring Sportsman and dog together to promote the Canine Sports and the Heritage of hunting over dogs. We are NOT affiliated with the AKC, UKC, or any other formal Registry but a group of Owner/Trainers that help promote their organizations and their events. We are Michigan’s Hunter and Canine Owner that loves the opportunity to work their dogs, train to a higher level and have a lot of fun along the way.

All of our events are open to the public, and membership is voluntary. Other clubs are more than welcome to attend for preparation to upcoming events in their own club, or for the weekend hunter wishing to extend the hunting season. We love the sport of hunting over dogs, love the hunt test and field trial game, and are wishing to make training opportunities more available.

Visit our website for more information and to register for our events. We conduct events all over the State of Michigan from April to September, giving plenty of chances to get out with your dogs in a variety of terrains.

We hope to see you soon.

new lights experiment

just ordered a couple different lights.

currently running 10 500 watt halos with 300 watt bulbs. using a champion 3500 genny. wanted more light but not more weight in my boat as its already loaded up weight wise. thought about hps 150s but they weigh 9 pounds each. thought about bigger genny and putting the 500 halo bulbs back in but a bigger genny is another 100 pounds.

decided to buy 4 hps 100 watt lights (same 9000 lumen output as a 500 watt halo). they only weight a pound and half. so im gonna run those and 4 500 watt halos and 2 300 watt halos.

so im going from 10 lights putting out total of 52000 lumens to 10 lights putting out 87500 total lumens. and i actually save 6 pounds of weight...lol

basically this set up lets me almost double my light out put and use save genny and not add weight. plus i hear the hps helps with murky water.

excited to see how it works out!

Spicy Sichuan Catfish With Garlic Recipe

I have adapted this dish from Fuchsia Dunlop’s excellent book Land of Plenty: A Treasury of Authentic Sichuan Cooking and from Hank Shaw’s blog, Hunter, Angler, Gardner, Cook. There are a few differences, I used oil instead of lard and I did not like the vinegar taste associated with the request for Chinese Black Vinegar or rice vinegar. I also used catfish fillets and not the whole catfish. Catfish fillets are much easier to find in a local grocery store.

Serves 4

Ingredients

4 catfish fillets. These can be bought at most local markets

1/2 cup Shaoxing wine or sherry

1 teaspoon salt

2 heads garlic, cloves peeled but whole

1/3 vegetable oil

4 tablespoons Chinese red chile bean paste

3 tablespoons minced ginger

2-3 cups chicken stock

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 tablespoon sugar

1 tablespoon corn starch, dissolved in 3 tablespoons water

5 green onions, chopped

Preperation

Marinate catfish fillets with the Shaoxing wine and salt for 1 hour.

Heat the oil in a deep sided pan or wok over medium heat and gently cook the garlic cloves until they are a little wrinkly on the outside, but still white. Do not let them brown. Set the cooked garlic aside.

Turn the heat to high. Pat the fish dry with paper towels, and when the oil is hot, fry the fish in batches for 2 minutes per side. Set the fish aside.

Pour off all but 3 tablespoons of the oil. Cook the chile bean paste in the oil for 30 seconds, stirring often.

Add the ginger and stir-fry another 30 seconds.

Pour in the stock and bring to a boil. Add the soy sauce and sugar. Put the fish in the pan and bring back to a boil.

Turn the heat down to a gently simmer and cook the fish 6 minutes.

Flip the fish over and add the garlic. Cook another 6 minutes.

Remove the fish and garlic to a platter and turn up the heat on the sauce. Boil the sauce furiously until it has been reduced by 1/3, about 3-4 minutes.

Stir the corn starch with the 3 tablespoons of water and into the sauce. Let this boil 1 minute.

Turn off the heat, add the green onions and the vinegar, and pour the sauce over the fish. Serve immediately.

Hi my name is Chuck and I am addicted to fishing

My name is Chuck and I am 29 and I am a fishing addict. I have been hooked since I was 3 years old and caught my first fish. I started out catching panfish then moved to the hard stuff. My addiction has gotten so bad that catching my limit of walleye on the Detroit river barley stops the shakes. I need to catch multiple 20+lb kings to feel good now.

Seriously though I live to fish. I also enjoy hunting and guns. I am a navy vet and I love the Constitution. I hope to meet other addicts on this site.

So hello to all

Best feeling ever!

I have hunted a lot of animals in my life time. But tonight killing my first turkey was the greatest feeling ever. I have hunted turkeys much maybe 3 times a season. But I decide this year I would hunt hard. After an opening morning bust I was feeling down. After 2 more days of busts I was really starting to question my tactics. Tonight after work I decided to go to a spot I had scouted earlier in the week. I set up on a 2 track and placed my decoy. I settled in and made my first yelps. Almost instantly I heard 2 gobbles from about 80 yards away. This was the first time I have ever had a bird talk back to me! I was in shock! My nerves started to kick in as I called again and the birds sounded closer. Suddenly they appeared I could see red heads and fans walking down the 2 track. Then they stopped at this point they still haven't seen my decoy. They gobbled about 4 times I could tell they wanted to know where this loan hen was. As I shook with turkey fever I lowered my gun and found my slate call on the ground and gave them a few yelps. Instantly they started walking closer. I let them get to 20 yards and I pulled the trigger on the bigger of the 2. Its not the biggest bird in the world but to me its a trophy! I will never forget that hunt. It was one of the most rewarding feelings knowing my hard work and planning all came together! My hunt only lasted 10 minutes but I will remember it always!

Buying a new fish finder

I left my old fish finder outside through this winter ( really bad idea ). So it's dead. I'm buying a Lowrance 4x model but I cannot decide between the

Lowrance Mark-4 Combo Fishfinder and chartplotter or the Lowrance Elite-4x DSI Color.

Both are identical in almost every way except one is monochrome and has a GPS/Chartplotter. While the other is color and has down scan imaging.

They are both at the same price point ( $170 ) which is my limit for purchasing a fish finder right now. Any advice on which one you would go with or does anyone have one of these models? If so how do you feel about it?

Yellow Lab

We are looking to get rid of our 5 year old yellow lab Bailey. She is a great dog, great retriever (although never took waterfowl hunting) a little hyper and territorial towards other dogs. The Fly Shop Signature Hooks Question

I was wondering if anyone has used The Fly Shop Brand hooks (Redding, CA)? Specifically, I'm looking at nymph hooks and egg hooks for steelhead.

I tie a large volume of flies for steelhead and these hooks are less than $10 per 100. Are these on par with Tiemco stuff? Or are they junk like Mustad standard stuff? I'd like to save some money, but I'm not willing to sacrifice on quality.

Thanks,

April 21 Mid River

Two buddies drove 2 hours to fish the D with me yesterday. They were out last year but neither landed a walleye in the boat.

Let's just say they were on fire!!! We fished mid river Canadian side from 1:00-5:00. Clairty was only a couple feet.

It didn't matter what we threw at them. WW black or brown....Fin S any colour....We landed over 25 fish!!! The biggest got off at the boat from a bad netting job by one of them:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Our biggest in the boat was 8.5 lbs. Many of the others were close behind that.

We kept a couple for meals but all of the big ones went back.

It was well worth the trip down for them!!!

Great morning!

After not being able to draw the big tom away from the hens at fly down and passing on a jake I patienly waited and at about 10:15 heard a couple gobbles that came from the same area as the morning roost. I anticipated the return of the morning tom but instead had a hen with two different toms coming my way. They exited the woods about 75 yards away and after what seemed like an eternity I was able to take this nice tom at 10:45. Attachment 62250 He weighed 22 lbs., with a ten inch beard and 3/4 and 15/16 spurs.

Not too shabby,

I really don't follow the NBA, or basketball altogether unless Michigan Michigan State, or another team from the Great State of Michigan are doing well in the College Basketball arena. That said, I happened to "remember" that these fellas did go early to the NBA (after l;earning about Robinson and Stouskas declaring early)and decided to take a look at how they did (or doing) this season. I found that Burke and Hardaway have faired pretty well their Rookie seasons. It looks like Burke could be a solid player for a long time, with Hardaway making some noise during his career. But Jamal Crawford could be the next Vinnie Johnson as a 6th man. Does anybody have any former Michigan State player news from the NBA? It would make for a good read. I always like hearing players with a State of Michigan connection doing well at the next level.

1st setup: Called 3 longbeards to 60 yards off the roost.

2nd setup: Called 2 long beards to 60 yards in a thicket.

3rd setup: Called 2 longbeards and a jake to shooting range, jake spooked, toms started to bolt and missed with rushing the shot.

4th setup: Shot a 2 year old at 20 yards that was directly behind me.

Beutiful day. Toms were doing there thing. Nobody was on the state land I was on ... life does not get no better.

Just another guy that can't get a bike...

Past few years I've been looking at getting a nice cruiser to run around on with a few friends and some family (know several of em that ride often). Every time I've asked it's usually been a no from the boss.

Couple days ago I was helping a buddy of mine pick up some stuff he'd bought from his uncle. This guys got six bikes (four of which are HD's, and no I'm not a fan) and he went off about trying to sell this one cruiser...the exact bike I'd only dreamed of owning over the years that was just about within my price range. Chatted it up with him, took the cover off the bike, sat on it, aaaaaaaannnnddd I wanted it instantly.

Said he'd take $1k and that he's put about $900 into new brakes, fluids, fork seals, tires, yada yada. I wanted it even more, but didn't have $1k to drop just like that. THEN he said he knew me well enough I could give him a couple hundred down payment and pay it off. Now THAT I could do!...so I got a hold of the wife

Surprisingly, after some negotiating and sweet talking, she was intrigued enough and says we'd talk about it when we got home. Weeeeeell it came down to "where ya gonna store it, why do you want or even need it, how much will the insurance go for, you do know we just spent such and such money on the car right?" The list went on, but I figured I'd held my ground well enough and answered wisely. Said she'd need the day to think on it.

Turned into a no eventually, though she did say maybe when we're a bit more solid financially...I'm sad...Oh so sad fellas...

out of state boats

I am trying to find out information on requirements for towing my boat in Michigan.

My residence, Tennesse does not require a license plate for boat trailers.

I want to bring my boat up but I don't want to get a ticket for no license plate.

If this is not the right forum for my question I apologize, this is my first attempt on this site.

Thanks

Looking for 90 - 100 hp Merc or Yammie 4 stroke

So, on top of pulling a limit of walleye on the 'D' yesterday, I lost the #2 cylinder on the main motor in the process. Looking for places to check for used 4 stroke 90 -115hp motors that would be reasonable, and not sell junk. I'm all set with 2 strokes. I don't mind spending the money as long as I can get quality.

Thank you

Crowd Pictures

Hey need some help showing how many people actually fish the DR for walleye. I always forget to capture the moment. Please post the crowd shots here for all to see. Extra points for pics with landmarks in the background. Surely that can be a secret with a crowd already there. Tight lines I know you will get the bite when you click the picture as the fish seem to know you are sleeping on the switch.

some more threats from shore

I was lucky enough to spend a day on the water with my 15 yr old son.

I will keep it short as it is a very sore subject considering I had my kid.

I decided to make a couple drifts at the belle island bridge on the way back to the launch. I started at the 3rd pylon. I got a greeting from a guy shore fishn,I didnt get the same from another guys as he said I better not get in his way, I nicely said I believe im plenty far enough away from causing him any headaches. I promptly got a ear full of nasty words that started with F & MFR & all the good stuff along with a (I will put some f n holes in that f n boat).

My beutiful maroon Ranger 690 with bullet holes in it I gave him a Really!!!! I had my kid & dont like bullets flying at me so I shook my head & headed for st.jean. I think my kid was worried that the fool would really shoot so my day was finished.

Texas Rios

What an exciting hunt in Texas, took my brother-in-law out for his first turkey hunt and it was awesome. We were done in 15 minutes! We had 6 longboards come in gobbling and strutting hard. We took a double. Then had 2 behind us (10 yards) gobbling, but we couldn't turn to get a shot. Both birds were 3 year olds, one could of been a 4 year old (spurs over 1 1/2).

Used DSD decoys, Nature Echo Glass call and A-way black magic mouth call. Below are a couple pics.

Looking for "fishing resort" in SW Mich

I'm looking for a fishing resort, for lack of a better term, in SW Michigan. A few friends and I want to take a few days and do some inland lake fishing near the end of May/early June. We do not own boats, so we need someplace where we can get a cabin for 4 guys, and rent a boat (or boats).

I live in the Lansing area, they are coming from Chicago - so somewhere in-between would suit best. Fishing for bass, walleye, crappie, gills, perch etc. is all fine (we're not overly picky - we save that for our FFing trips ;)).

Any ideas? I've seen some places online (Rogers Resort, Happy Rock Resort, Fullers Resort), but first hand experience would be nice... are there any at one of the many lakes between Gull and Gun Lakes, for example?

Thanks for any info...

50hp Mercury 2 stroke help!

Looking for advice.

I have a 2006 50hp oil injected 2 stroke. Motor starts and idles great. Motor is on a 165 Lowe.

Occasionally the motor will not run above 3500 Rpms and will not get the boat on plane. Seems to happen more often when fishing with one or two other guys. Heavier load and it struggles. Even with a heavy load the motor should still get up to normal running Rpms right???

I've never had the problem when fishing alone. Sure seems a 50hp on a 165 shouldn't have a problem with two to three adults. I've seen plenty of other boats cruising by with similar set ups.

Any suggestions or recommendations for a good mechanic that won't rape me or have the boat all summer???

Thanks!

River steelys

Hey guys,

Up here in Traverse river fishings been limited. The only river close being the Boardman which can be really touchy and this being my first year fishing for steelhead I was wondering what rigs you guys use. Right now I'm using a standard float rig(bobber, swivels, bias splitshots,) baited with roe or crawlers. Recent weather has made the water quite murky and flooded and I'm looking for an alternative setup to try.

Thanks for any help!

Looking for a couple spots on the river that My son and I might catch a few Walleye. Working on getting a boat but still a month or so away. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Dredging to begin at Aloha State Park boat launch

Dredging to begin at Aloha State Park boat launch

Contact: <a href="http://ift.tt/1qIcneK 24805c0&u=mailto%3Aspellj%40michigan.gov">Jeremy Spell, 231-625-2522, or Ed Golder, 517-284-5815

A much-needed dredging project will begin this spring at Aloha State Park near Cheboygan. The dredging will target the channel and mouth of the boat basin into Mullett Lake. The boat launch at the park will be closed during the dredging. Campers and boaters will be redirected to the Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) Jewell Road boating access site, which is less than 10 miles away. DNR officials expect the project will be completed no later than June 20, and a follow-up press release will be issued at that time.

"The mouth of the channel has been slowly filling in with sediment over the years," said Aloha State Park Supervisor Jeremy Spell. "During routine depth soundings of the channel a few years ago, depths as shallow as two feet were recorded between the two rock jetties."

Although this project will create a short period of inconvenience for boaters at Aloha State Park, ultimately the project will make access to Mullett Lake from the park much safer.

For questions regarding the boat launch at Aloha State Park, please call the park at 231-625-2522.

Wind forecasting?

I have been getting my wind forecast for the last few years from WeatherBug and Fish Weather applications on my cell phone. Fish Weather is basically the same thing as is Sailflow. This year both applications have been terribly and inaccurate. I have missed out on several days that I did not go jigging because the forecast stated it was going to be 30 mile per hour + winds, and it wasn't. Curious as to where everyone else gets there wind forecast information from, and if they deem it to be accurate? Thank you in advance.

PixelBots: Making Things With Light! (And Robots!)

When I was growing up, one of my favorite toys was the good old Lite Brite. I’m guessing that it was an indication that I would later find myself hopelessly addicted to pixel art. Now, technologists are working on tiny robots which can create Lite Brite style art all on their own.

pixelbots 620x342magnify

Created by Disney Research and the Autonomous Systems Lab, ETH Zurich, PixelBots are round, palm-sized robots which have a LEDs inside of them, and a drive mechanism on their bottoms. An overhead camera tracks the positions of each robot and a computer controls each robot remotely. They’re designed to be able to swarm together to create rudimentary images composed of dots.

Currently, the robots can replicate images drawn on a tablet, and the can also change between images using gesture controls. They can also automatically recover their position if a user picks one up and moves it out of place.

One other neat thing is that their wheels are actually magnetic, so they could not only be used on tabletops, but they could stick to whiteboards too. While I’m not sure there are too many practical application for PixelBots, they sure look like fun, and I’d certainly love to have a fleet of them at my command.
