For anybody with any knowledge or experience on gun lake, I could use your best tips or advice on how and where to fish. I have a bass fishing tournament coming up and was hoping somebody could help. Feel free to pm me if you would like. Anything would be helpful since I've never even been to the lake before. Thanks in advance!!

Au Gres River rose about a foot today

Pretty wild day with that east wind, water pushed in and the river rose about a foot. Some docks flooded, interesting considering where we were 2 years ago.

Message for the Day

You can only give away what you already have inside yourself.
True giving happens when you are overflowing from the inside and cannot help but share. When there is so much love within you that it has to flow to others or you would burst open. There is no thinking involved, no willpower in such sharing. It just flows out. If you have to force yourself to be kind, to love, to feel compassion, you've missed the first step of filling in your own self with these emotions.

Brace Lake North Of Nakina - Killer Trip!!

Hey guys last week I completed my first trip of the year to Brace Lake Outfitters north of Nakina, Ontario. I've been on well over 50 fly in trips and have been priveleged to fish some of the finest pike waters in the north and I had what was easily the single best day of trophy northern fishing I've ever had in my life! Best part was I got to experience that with my young son. :)

I just completed a full write up on the trip along with about 12 embedded videos and a gross number of photos. If you're interested check it out!

We're in Hartford which is about 17 miles south of South Haven. A bear started coming to our yard on May 22 and the DNR has confirmed the sighting. I put a video of it on YouTube if anyone wants to see it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQNaCU_K2aI

No more back aches

Well, after hitting a few bad waves today, I went and made the move and bought the new smooth move seats for my boat. Going to put them in Sunday while the N.E. is blowing. May even go out in it to see just how good they work. Should be nicer then the factory stock seats. I got the new ultra moves.

Snake identity help!

Fountain Pen

How many of you use a fountain pen on occasion? Do any of you remember writing with one back in school?
In the elementary school I went to, once we started writing with pens, we had to use a fountain pen. We were not allowed to use a ball point pen until the 6th grade. Recently, I decided to acquire a fountain pen, probably more for nostalgia reasons than anything else. Rather than order one online, I preferred to find one in the store so I could look at it first. I eventually found what I wanted and bought them the other day at Staples. I picked up a Cross Aventura on sale for $20. I was not about to pay more than that. You can find some online that go up to $100 and more. It writes very smooth and I think it makes the writing look much better than using a ball point. Of course, if you can not write in cursive and can only print, then a pencil will do the job for you. I also picked up a pack of two disposable Bic fountain pens for $4.99. They are not quite as smooth as the Cross, but they work well.
I am now have to practice my penmanship. Writing looks so much better in real ink.

So let's talk a 2 Bird Limit...

I know, I know; we've had this discussion here somewhat before but I am relegating this discussion to Private Land in the Southern Lower.

I'll also ban the "Just fill your tag, and take other people hunting." argument. ;) I love killing turkeys. I love eating turkeys. It is fun taking other's, and I personally do it quite a bit. For some folks, it's deer. For me, it's turkeys.

Doing some research, talking to many other buddies who hunt States with multiple bird limits and doing so myself as well, and looking at the State of Michigan's tag system I'm really wondering why the DNR has not implemented a (2) Bird Limit for Private Land in the Southern Lower. Hear me out;

1. There were over 39,000 LEFTOVER tags for the early season hunt. That's leftover tags; Think about that.

2. There was NO quota for the 234 Late hunt.

Even if only HALF of the leftover tags were sold to Hunters looking to tag two birds on Private land, that would be a financial windfall of approximately $270,000 per year. Over a couple of years, that is a huge number.

If bird populations were an issue, throw the Fall Season Tag situation in play. Why are they unlimited in the Fall season?

Every property I hunted, or had access to has a very healthy population going. We are now to the point that complaints from Farmers are becoming more and more commonplace. Granted, this is from a 4 County area, but I don't think these 4 counties are the exception.

For hunters that come in from out of State, would there not be a benefit to being able to pick up a second tag for Private land after already paying the higher fee's now in place? For many of my Out of State hunting bud's, this has been a major point of theirs. Once again, this is nothing but a financial bonus for the State.

It's probably my brain still wrapped around Turkeys that the season is near over, but hoping to open some discussion.

Thoughts?

So let's talk a 2 Bird Limit...

5/30 upper

Wish I had something good to report, other than we got out for about 2 1/2 hours before the rains. Picked one at the cow pasture (Finesse) and one at the whiskey (Black WW). Only saw one other walleye netted.

Hope the rest of you did better than us!

Atlanta Area Float Fishing

Hi Guys,

Going to head up to the Vanderbilt area in mid-June to do some fishing. Planning to hit some small streams up there, but also wondering if there's any decent "float water" where I might slide a drift boat to fish streamers or hex/drakes?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Not looking for specific spots, of course, but just names of rivers that would fit the bill.

Thanks!

Ray

Is the Pure Michigan Hunt Legal?

To be legal it should be just or have/be justice?

I recently purchased an over the counter turkey permit, a drawing for bear license, a drawing for a bull elk, and 1 drawing for pure Michigan hunt. It struck me days later and it stays on my mind because I see it being not just or possibly be illegal, let me try to explain.

Everyone that applies for a drawing for turkey, bear and elk are allowed to purchase one application or drawing per year. Let me emphasize one application per year, also if you are drawn for any elk you are ineligle to apply for elk the rest of your life, whether you are successful or not.

On the pure Michigan hunt drawing you can purchase as many drawings as you can AFFORD. Also this does not hurt your chances for future drawings and if you get an elk permit it does NOT make you inelligible to apply in future drawings.

Now I live close to a pay per hunt or preserve their whitetail hunt top size is a 4 day or 7 day hunt pkg for 18000 dollars. I see for 1 that the pure Michigan hunt allows multimillionares the opportunity to bypass the system. It does not garauntee a drawing but add 10000 or 100000 drawing chances in someone's favor to increase their odds may in effect pay for a pure Michigan hunt.

2 How can someone or even the state lottery off something that they do not own the elk, bear and turkey in Michigan are owned by the people of this state.

3 It is illegal I believe in this state to have a pyramid scheme or sell something that is promised or sold to someone else. In the regular drawings by one application it makes it an equal or just application but 3 tags is each species (deer turkey elk) are not done that way.

Talking to the DNR they told me those harvest quotas are not included into the regular drawing. I said why not that is three tags of each species that would be drawn equally and in the end they still are harvested and should be included in quotas or an addional 9 chances done with equal opportunity.

They than said it was like our lottery. Hold on now why are we paying for license,s how can you charge us for licenses and lottery what we have to pay for? It is far from a lottery because a lottery wins something that can not be purchased.

Any way I feel the pure Michigan hunt is not fair or just to the general public of Michigan. Do not get me wrong I bought the drawing but foresight was not hindsight looking at it now I regret the purchase for I feel it is not just, to all the other applicants in the regular drawings.

You opinion would be greatly appreciated.

2015 reptiles and amphibians

I figured I would start a thread to post some of my finds this year. I usually try to post just a few finds at a time, but I've gotten a little behind, so these first few posts will be just to get caught up on my year so far. After that, I'll try to keep adding to this thread a little more regularly, so I don't get so far backlogged again.

Again, thanks to all who have helped out with locations and information. You guys have made herping in Michigan an awesome experience. Hope you enjoy. :)

I'll start with amphibians, since I've only photographed four species so far this year.

American toad (Bufo americanus)

 -

Green frog (Lithobates clamitans)

 -

 -

Red-backed salamander (Plethodon cinereus)

 -

 -

Blue-spotted salamander (Ambystoma laterale)

Thanks for looking. More to come. :)

Mettre sur l'abbatage.

I just made that french saying up. It may be a Flanglish speak, But it reflects my thinking that Michigangers are too lazy and stupid and not goal directed enough to possibly take out antlerless deer in a harvest. They will not do it.

You get a problem in Meridian TWP. Expect no significant antlerless harvest. I guarantee it. There is no motivation among the rural folks to advance the cause.

Personal Best Flathead

Haven't posted in a while, but I'm super proud of this new personal best flatty. This fish far exceeds my previous 14lb. I have found that some of the biggest cats are feeding before most catfishermen even get the gear out. Caught this 35" beast that i estimated around 30lbs just over a week ago. Hooked perfectly in the corner of the mouth with an 8/0 circle hook. Released back to the murky waters to get even bigger!Attachment 79527Attachment 79528

bowfishing holloway help

Hey guys, I've went to holloway twice this year already and have been having a hard time. I've only seen 2 fish swimming and ended up getting one (my first one ever) problem is its way too muddy to see. I can see tons of them moving through the cat tails but can't actually see the fish to aim. I've been fishing the east end of the lake past the 3 bridges near columbiaville. Are there any better spots where I would have more success/clarity? What do you suggest I do?
Thanks

Why CWD here?

So more then likely the CWD came from an dead animal that was shot out of state and brought back to Michigan illegally possibly knowingly or unknowingly .

WHY DID THE HUNTER LEAVE MICHIGAN?
Because our deer hunting sucks!

WHY?
Because we have on group of hunters including some at the DNR that wanted to make regulations to improve deer hunting in Michigan that couldn't get it done!

WHY?
Because it gets derailed by a bunch of cry baby half ass woodsman that want a deer behind every tree so they can tell their bar buddies that "I got MY BUCK" every year.

I'm sure this will piss off some on here and I also bet they are the same ones who can't see the difference between a pile of sugar beets and a living growing food plot.

The balls of some of you who are against QDM and want to blame this on older deer is unreal. QDMA's first goal is herd reduction, they suggest targeting older does first. Yes there might be more older bucks but there is ALOT LESS bucks in TRUE MANAGED AREA.

Why CWD here?

Is this legal?

So I'm not saying I'm seriously considering this but the age old debate on our boat is whether or not it would be legal to shoot skeet off the back of the boat when the fishing is slow. Im assuming no, but it would be pretty cool during the impending june swoon. Thoughts? Answers?

NEED HELP: Found GSP Looking For His Owners

Does anyone know of anyone looking for a LOST solid liver GSP in the Jackson area? A client of ours who already owns one GSP cannot keep him. They will keep him through the weekend. He was found last weekend and is very handsome. The vet said that he appears to be about 4 years old. He did have a collar on him, but NO ID. Their vet cannot find any micro-chip in him, either. Please spread the word around as we would like help in order to find his owners. He is very nice looking (well kept), friendly, well socialized with other animals. I am sure that someone is heartbroken that they have lost their companion.

Please spread the word! They have already contacted all of the vets, shelters and police department and posted on local bulletin boards. They asked if I could help get the word out. This forum network may be able to help? Thanks for anything you can do to get this word out there and maybe locate his owners.

I am sure that his rightful owners will have a photo and know some identifying characteristics about him.

Thanks so much for passing this info around!

Today, US side

The white bass had not hurt my fishing until todays trip. Even in 40-46' fow they were making it near impossible to target walleyes. Ended up boating 4 walleye and lost 2. Got a 53'' sturgeon as well. Took about 30 mins to get in. Got it jigging. I was solo today and went through my 2 dozen night crawlers on my harnesses in no time. After I got number 4, I had no worms left!! Half the morning I was trolling fast enough just to keep the silvers off my setup, but unfortunately i believe this was too fast for the eyes. Today was a challenge for sure.

Copper VS Leadcore

Hey fellas so I've been doing a lot of research on pros and cons of both copper and Leadcore I have both on my boat. I'm considering changing over to completely copper on everything. As in 50 , 100, 150, coppers with a longer lead behind the copper. I'm curious if anyone else has done the same. I know Leadcore will always have its place. SWRs, cost , handling, smaller diameter etc. Please bombard this with your thoughts.

It was a tough bite after the storms on the W side. Maybe next trip I'll try the East side. :) Sorry about the late report but I had some things that I had to take care of. Sorry about no pics as the camera is still on the boat.

Joe, Bob, and I started by doing some scouting. There were nets all over one of my favorite spots off Au Gres. We first set lines in 37 FOW with no takers. More scouting. Set lines in 24 FOW with no takers early but finally picked up a fish that went in the box so I circled back. It was already getting late as I had 2 GM 2cd shift workers onboard and needed to be in by 1PM. I finally figured out that they wanted it sloooow and I mean ice out slooooow. I don't think I ever ran below 1 MPH in late May before. The last hr of fishing I was between 0.7 and 1.0 MPH depending on direction. A glow green on a down rod took 6 out of 12 eyes. We also took a 13-1/2" perch that will be on my dinner plate tonight. We could have filled up with 3 more fish if we had another 1/2- 1 hr fishing time. Joe and Bob went home with 5 walleye each as my limit always fills last. Just too slow figuring it all out. The radio was full of doom and gloom. I gave out the information to slooooow it down over the radio to a few friends, and all that were listening on 68. The same info was phoned to some friends. There were suspended fish that just wouldn't go so we scraped all of them off the bottom. :) 3oz BB off the down rods and 2oz off the boards. Spinner rigs with meat. Light bite to say the least.

Anyone use garmin chartplotter/fishfinder?

In my search for a new GPS/fishfinder the garmin 73dx has really caught my eye, but there doesn't seem to be much information out there about it. Does anyone have any experience with this unit? Does it compare favorably to the Elite-7 CHIRP and the HB 859ci HD?

Are there any negatives about the garmin line compared to the HB/Lowrance? Anything about the garmin line I should be aware of before purchasing?

Unit would be used on Lake Erie exclusively, anyone know if the built in LakeVu HD has good mapping for Erie? I can upgrade to the a LakeVu HD Ultra for $100 after rebate if that would be much better.

Thanks for any advice

St . Clair or Ohio ?

Haven't made up my mind yet , I haven't fished the big waters on my own boat so I'm not use making all the choices:) with a south wind tomorrow 10-15 is it a smarter choice to head to Ohio waters than st.Claire ... I'm not sure of the wind affect on st. Claire cause ice never been ! I imagine south is the worst but Im not sure . Thanx guys for the advice

Grand River Walleyes

I hear they are catching a few walleye here and there by 6th street. I got a boat and was wondering what any good methods are for some walleye. Im not planing on going up to the dam on the boat but just by the johnson park boat launch. Is trolling my best bet? What kind of lures should I throw back? -Thanks Elliot

Idaho Elk 2015 Big T & barnaby43

Many of you followed along last year as I prepared for my elk hunt in Idaho and then as Huntmaster joined in on the fun.
As we all know now, Huntmaster hit the lotto in WY and drew a 2015 tag in the same unit he hunted in 2013. That hunt, coupled with a hunt with his brother and father in NM took him out of consideration for joining me again this fall.
My first trip, in 2012, was with family that live out there. My BIL always applies for a moose tag for Idaho and waits to make elk plans until he finds out if he drew a coveted moose tag. In Idaho, if you draw a Premium tag (moose, goat, or sheep) you can't hunt other big game that year. As luck would have it he drew a moose tag which had me seriously considering going it alone, although it wasn't my preference.
We've read a couple of horror stories on this forum about trips guys took together that ended in disaster and/or ended friendships. IMO, finding the right chemistry with a hunting partner should be just as, or more, important as finding a good spot to hunt. I don't take this lightly and just the thought of losing a friend that way makes me cringe.
A couple of summers ago I was contacted by a gentleman from west Michigan that was interested in a project I was working on. Through some phone conversations and eventually meeting face to face, I discovered that our passion for "The Hunt" was very similar. I also felt at easy talking to him and my BS detector never moved off zero.
Fast forward to last week. I contacted Greg (barnaby43 here on MS) and floated the idea of joining me in Idaho this fall. After he discussed it with his wife and secured the time off of work, we settled on a plan. We leave Wednesday, September 16th for 12 days on the Continental Divide in the Gem State.
I can't promise that every detail will be covered like Huntmaster and my hunt was last year, unless of course barnaby43 is as anal as Huntmaster was about keeping a diary , but I/we will do our best to take you along on our adventure this fall.

Entry level Reels ?

For a few years I've "dabbled" with trolling for trout and salmon. Fishing both lake superior and lake Michigan about 3 times each per year. My question to you all is; what is a good entry level reel for trolling that has a nice LOUD clicker and is affordable for a retiree on a low budget. Preferably with a line counter but not entirely necessary. I fish with both a downrigger and a couple dipsy's and fishing alone I can't always be watching my rods. Thus the desire for a LOUD clicker, ;) I'm also hard of hearing. I currently use an older penn 209 and a okuma magna pro 20. I can hear the penn clicker going out but not the magna. I'd get a couple new penns but I heard the china made reels are not as good as the old USA made ones.
Thank you for any input.

2 mile area on LSC with separate consumption guidelines

For your reading pleasure

From page 36
"If you are fishing on the lake in between Lakefront Park and Veteran’s Memorial
Park & out into open water in that area, please see the Special Notice, page 36"

http://ift.tt/1ezWNCT

They have a new recommendation for the 2 mile area of open water near the Lang/Revere Canal...

Do they know the fish move? I still think most of the guide could be a lot better with specific size recommendations vs. contaminant level/consumption guide.

The Fishing Report from SDI 5-28-15

This spring overall has delivered many good to great days fishing. However with that said this spring has been a bit harder for some to get a handle on things. We have had a lot of up and down temps, plus with the higher water some anglers are finding it tough to figure things out. Best word advice I can give anyone right now is fish the fish not history. History gives you a starting point after that branch out and try different areas that may have had just about no water on it the last few years these areas have been productive this spring so far.

Bass: We do have fish on beds and fish that are actively making them. We have yet to see any fry and that could be to the roller coaster temps we have seen this spring to date. But looks like start this week we will become stable and things will get in full swing.

There hasn't been just one hot bait this year. Ever day we have gone out a different bait has been the primary fish catcher. If I was going to have rods rig on the deck this is what I would have ready to go.

Red * are my go to right now.
*1. Spinnerbait (chart/white, Chart/white/blue)
2. Lipless Crank
3. Jerkbait (Shadow Rap, Husky Jerk and Lucky Craft Pointer 100)
*4. 4 inch Tube ( Green Pumpkin, Ruffes Poop, Formal G3, Sweet Green, St. Clair Goby NFT)
*5. Swimbait ( Domination Shad, Fat Swing Impact, Shad-o-liousces in shad and shiner colors)
6. Dropshot ( Robo Worm, Darter, Z Worm, Senko
7. Senko Wacky rigged.

These 7 rods should give you the perfect arsenal for going after these fish right now from 15 to 2 FOW. The only thing curve ball I throw in there if the weather is stable is a Spybait in the 80 size.

Walleye: The weeds have started to pop up and the water has a tint to it fish are being caught here on the US side, but the best main lake action is on the Canadian side right now. The rivers are still a solid choice for those that can't make the run to the queen side. Cranks have been very productive for guys in the main lake.
 -
Gills/Sunnies: Could be the best fishing in the last 4 seasons right now. Lots of fish being caught in the canals and on the main lake now. They are even catching them UL cranks.

Crappies: Some good reports are still coming in a few of the main lake areas are starting to see fish also.

Catfish: When ever the flow is up in the Spillway get there fish have been large and numerous at times.Other places to try are Waterfront Park, and Harley Ensign.

ROCK BASS!!!!!! They have been on fire this spring with some really big ones being caught.

Still around.

Went out to my favorite morel spot and still am finding them. This year the whites seem to be sticking among the poplars and maples with very few in the elms. The half free or pecker heads were in their own group under sugar maples. Found some oysters in one of the poplar stands with the whites an added bonus. - - - - - - - - - -

New fishing Kayak for Newbie

So I've recently gotten into the idea of kayak fishing and picked up a kayak from a gentleman on Craigslist after looking over some reviews on it. It's a Feelfree Moken 12 SOT. I'm hoping to bring it out on some small lakes at first for walleye then work my way up in lakes and night fishing as I gain experience. My question is has anyone had some experience with the Mokens? Are the suitable for what i'm looking to do? Also what might be some additions I might want to make it easier for fishing? Next purchase I need is a good PFD vest (my current one rides high on me in the kayak) and then a anchor trolley but what else should I look into? Also any tips on setting it up for trolling would be appreciated as well (sorry, so many questions and I'm excited to learn!) Thanks for any help as always.

Another season in the books

Well 2015 was an exciting year. I spent 90% of my season with the bow and was trying to stick one without using a blind. Getting one with the bow and no blind proved to be a bigger challenge than I had originally thought. I had a lot of super exciting hunts with nice birds at ultra close range but I was never able to quite seal the deal. I did learn a ton in the process though and had a blast doing it. With only a handful of days left in the season I folded like a house of cards and decided to grab the ole thunderstick this morning . As much fun as I was having with the bow 4 a.m. comes way too early and my gas tank was on fumes and I was kinda ready to call it a year. Got my ticket punched about 7:45 and still made it to work by 8:15.
10 3/4" Beard, 1 3/8" Spurs 22#.........and the best part......the alarm isn't going off at 4 a.m. tomorrow morning.

BAM Youth Tournament

June 13th is the BAM youth tournament at Muskegon Lake. Who all else will be there?

I will be there with my boat! The only problem I have is I don't know any youth to join my boat.... Could easily fit 2-3 youth + another adult on my boat. I do have a couple of youth hunting bows that are setup with retreivers and both have 20-30# draws that could be used on my boat...:help:

Please let me know if you know any youths that want a boat to hop on!

loggers staging area food plot

Last summer we had 100 acres of our 730 acre property logged off and I was thinking about putting in food plots in the two staging areas the loggers had the wood stacked up at. There's new woody growth popping up everywhere except in the two staging areas, I think the logs compacted the soil so much that no trees are growing there.
My question is can I disc and rototill the soil up and plant a food plot there or will nothing grow there? Have any of you ever tried this before?

St. Mary's River

Can anyone tell me when the best time is to fish for salmon in the St. Mary's River. I heard the Atlantic's run sometime in June. And I've gone to Manistee the last two years for Chinook in the fall. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Do most people fish from a boat or are they wading?

Crappie timing

Well, think I missed, once again, my mostest favorite time of the open water season. Went out Saturday from 8-11:30. Hit every weedbed on the lake. Besides Pike and Bass, only caught this one Crappie....but it was a tie for my personal best....16"s. Small red treble hook and fathead under a slip bobber in about 5' of water between weed clumps. Still a good morning out on the water. Carp appear to be in full swing though.....lots of jumpers. Southern Livingston County. Anyone find any on the spawn still? No electronics on the pontoon so I couldn't see water temp, thus, I am just assuming I missed the spawn?
