speaking of algonac state park.....

actually many of the state parks. we enjoy taking our grand kids, well till they got too big for it, to the campgrounds for weekends in october for the "harvest festival" thing. everyone decorates their campers for trick or treating and the kids have a ball dressing up and running the roads getting goodies. the campgeound hosts generaly have some fun crafts and games for the kids and everyone is there for the fun with the kids , so there are generaly no grumpie geezers to spoil the fun.

if you haven't done this i highly recomend setting a weekend aside, finding a favorite park with this activity. and making a memory for the kids.:fish:

X board sillouette decoys

I've been doing a lot of looking for sillouette diver decoys but haven't found much but homemade Y boards with scoters and sea ducks. I did however stumbled on a image of a vintage sillouette decoy board from the 1950s that sparked my interest.

 -

And after seeing the sea duck Y board sillouettes I liked the old style better with 4 sillouettes spread out farther then the Y.

Also been reading about coroplast and knowing that I have goose sillouettes, I made a standard template for divers and got the shape I wanted to make my own coroplast sillouettes.

 -

First made a rough stencil from foam board and shaped it to my specs.

 -

Then transferred that outline to same thickness plywood.

 -

Now traced that out on a sheet of coroplast ( old political sign ) and cut it out on the bandsaw, which I should be able to cut 4 to 8 at a time and have as many as I need for late season or next season.

Personal Best Catfish

Started out perch fishing off the Shipping Channel, Monday 9/29/14. Began too late in the day but caught 5 keepers before they shut down. Tried to save the day by anchoring in the South Channel. Caught this channel catfish on cut bait (white perch). Took about 15 minutes to get it to the net. 35 inches, 23 pounds and 6 ounces. Measured, weighed, and photographed it before letting it go to live another day. :)

Question about using a sled?

I am thinking about using a sled (probably my daughters old snow sled) for pulling deer out of the woods. How do you guys use your sleds? Do you pull them in with you and hide them or leave them in your vehicle and get it after the shot? I will be hunting state land likely 300-500 yards from my vehicle.

Seed corn fields

Due to the huge amount of seed corn now, many fields have very little stubble and hiding layout blinds is a problem. Short of digging a pit, what methods have worked well for you? Considering an actual blind of corn or straw, thinking it may look more natural, like a small patch of unpicked corn than four or more separate blobs in the field. Opinions?

washing your hunting clothes

Ideally I'd have a dedicated washing machine for my hunting clothing, but I don't so was wondering what others do to be scent free. Hand wash and wring out as best you can and line dry? Any tricks to de-scent the everyday washer? I've tried to clean ours but the fabric softener the wife insists she needs is like wax and I can't feel confident that I've de-scented it.

Pink arrows

In need of some new arrows and found some pink ones. After laughing for a while at the thought of myself heading into the woods with pink arrows I got thinking. There is nothing in the woods that is pink. I struggle to decide what color fletching to go with. But there are red leaves orange leaves white snow bright green stuff. I've never seen pink. I can pick out pink surveyors tape in the woods in a heartbeat for that reason.

Imagine I'll take quite a ribbing but seriously considering it. Anyone else want to fess up?

Hunting ethics

Last weekend me and two buddies went out for woodcock. we got to our spot which I have come to realize is not a big secret . We just started into our cover which was a narrow strip about 400 yards long paralleling a 2 track about 5 min into it, 4 guys parked off the 2 track were we cut in and proceeded to hunt the other Side from us with their dog cutting in our strip putting up birds ahead of my dog . I was not very happy with this. my dog was running a beeper so I know that they knew we were in the cover not to mention we could see them . They ran the other side from us for about 300 yards then moved away from us . My question is do you think this was acceptable or do you think they should have moved on ? And would you have confronted them ?

Craws in the flint river system

Hey all im pretty new to the forums and you guys seem like a great bunch with a lot of knowledge. never even knew about cray trapping but is definitely something i think i can get in to. I know its late in the season but i am grabbing a couple traps tomorrow and figure i can get a few runs in still so i have some experience next year. My question is after reading about how pollutant sensitive craws are, would i be wasting my time in the flint in areas between the holloway dam and say downtown flint? Anyone trap in the river or mott lake? I fish those areas a lot and haven't noticed craw remains but haven't been looking either. Any tips would be great, not looking for your honey hole, just some general area(s) to start..Thanks...

Starting to color U.P.

The U.P. is starting to color up. Both leaves and brookies looking fantastic. It's been a couple of years since I made a U.P. fall run. Weather was fall perfect. Bugs at a minimum to non-existing. Little chilly which made the camp fire and Hot hot dogs perfect.

I brought this up a couple of years ago. You'll notice from the brookies in the pictures that there is a couple of odd ball trout for the area. While still fun to catch, I wish they didn't exist in this river. Still wondering how they got there. I lost a third odd ball (rainbow) at the net that was pushing 15 inches.

All in all a great trip and looking forward to many more.

I my way home I hit a new spot that I knew nothing about. Beautiful river in spots. Managed a nice brown trout and little brookie. Sorry no pictures of the fish. But I did take a picture of the river. Anyone know this spot? Looked kinda popular by the road leading to it and the camping spot.

Thanks for having me.

Muskegon river open seats 2014

After a stellar season last year, I'm eager to get things rollin' on the Mo as soon as possible. This time last season I started a thread to share my open seats for pluggin' and was glad to see how many people that were willing to fish with a total stranger. Every outing was enjoyable and relaxing to say the least, some more productive than others, some were just good days on the water with a fish or two for our efforts. I hope that I see old faces again this season and plenty more new ones as well. For anyone who wanted to go and didn't get the chance, I hope we can get time and make a trip. We'll be running the same program as last year but, with a lot more equipment and way more plugs than one guy needs, thanks to some side work from a fellow member. We run plugs almost exclusively, not because it's the most productive but, because it's the best chance you have at connecting with a trophy fish. Last season our average fish was 12 lbs and we boated 3 master anglers and one that got away after the split ring straighten out. We'll be fishing from a 16' drift boat that fishes two up front and a rower. Between plug runs there will be rods in the boat to toss spinners for steelhead and salmon. We do use some bait but, not in the conventional fashion. If anybody is interested in a trip but, needs to plan one I can make plans way in the future. Hopefully it's a great season of bruises busting tackle and testing equipment.

There are open seats starting Saturday morning for salmon, fingers crossed. Trip starts very early and runs till around 1. Riders will be needed to help spot vehicles one above and one below. Bring your own snacks, drinks and comforts. I've got space for spare rods if you wanna bring one along. Make sure you prepare for whatever the weather may do, we're in a drift boat and are subject to the pace of the river. It's a first come first serve basis, first pm in gets it. Thanks guys.

Preliminary exam for Beaverton man accused of robbing Amish set for Sept. 25

Agency: Natural ResourcesSept. 23, 2014

The Department of Natural Resources today announced that the preliminary exam for a Beaverton, Michigan, man who is accused of robbing an Amish buggy at gunpoint in Clare County has been set for Thursday, Sept. 25, in Clare County's 80th District Court.

Doyle Robert Dell, 20, of Beaverton, was arrested for armed robbery and is currently lodged in the Clare County Jail awaiting trial.

Dell allegedly robbed an Amish buggy at gunpoint in May in Sheridan Township. According to law enforcement reports, Dell allegedly stopped the buggy while brandishing a firearm and demanded money from the family in the buggy.

Local law enforcement authorities unsuccessfully sought information and tips in the case in May. In August, an informant came forward with information about the case and was willing to talk only to Department of Natural Resources conservation officer Steve Lockwood. Lockwood shared the information with the Gladwin and Clare county sheriff's departments and assisted on the execution of a search warrant, the arrest and interviews with the suspect. The firearm allegedly used in the incident was confiscated.

"Officer Lockwood's connections with the Clare County community helped make this arrest," said Lt. Glenn Gutierrez, DNR Law Enforcement supervisor in Roscommon. "Additionally, the public trust in Officer Lockwood proved key to solving this crime."

URGENT: Call your Representative this morning!

MICHIGAN DOG OWNERS: Please contact your Representative this morning and urge them to oppose HB 5095. Find your Representative here: http://ift.tt/1x6X07a

UKC commends the idea and intent behind House Bill 5095, which seeks to amend the current law regulating pet shops and animal shelters, but has some serious concerns as well. The bill also encompasses “large-scale dog breeding kennels” and defines them as kennels “where more than 15 female intact dogs over the age of 4 months are housed or kept for the primary purpose of breeding.” While the word “primary” has been added at UKC’s request, it is not a sufficient exception for breeders of working, show, hunting, and performance dogs. UKC believes that the health and well-being of dogs are of the utmost importance, and are significant concerns. However, UKC believes that breeders who are active with their dogs ARE the responsible breeders and ostensibly not the target of this legislation. “Large-scale dog breeders” should already be licensed and regulated by the USDA. Enforcement of HB 5095 will be burdensome and costly to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, and does not carry nearly the weight that current cruelty and neglect laws do. HB 5095 is simply unnecessary, and as UKC's reasonable amendments were not added to the bill, we cannot support HB 5095 in its current form.

Musky! September help

I have not had a chance to hit St Clair all summer. Looks like it will happen Saturday. I'm excited. I plan on running across to the south shore, Hump etc. Anyone been out lately? Any tips? Fow? Speed? Wash? Down? Boards? Big vs small? Jointed vs straight?

I'll likely run a couple of board rods and a couple prop wash rods. Tend towards larger straight lures. Supposed to be sunny n warm so will run lighter colors first. Probably hold speed down to 3-4 first I guess.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Here or pm.

Thanks,

So snagging with a fly on TV is OK?

2 out of the 3 fish landed in the first segment were obviously snagged (just look at the line angle when they jump). And the "guide" has the audacity to call other anglers "snaggers"? This should have never made the show. If MUCC wants people to film catching salmon legit, there are plenty of people out there that they can film. This was sad, really sad...

Sighting in a rifle - lots of ammo?

Hello all,

I bought my first new centerfire rifle today, a Tikka T3 stainless/composite LH in .30-06. It has a Zeiss Terra T3 4x-12x on it.

It was bore scoped by Cabela's. After 15 rounds today at the range, and not getting the sight-in job done, I am wondering how many rounds people usually take to do this with a green rifle and scope.

This is a great article, and it confirms my experience: http://ift.tt/XQt6oj

I was shooting a smallish paper target 30 yards away. I got some shots on paper, and was starting to group, then shots started not hitting the paper. I think the barrel started getting warm, which the article suggests causes problems sighting in.

Left/right seemed OK after Cabela's bore scope operation. Elevation was way high (feet, it seemed) at 30 yards. Over a few rounds fired, I turned the elevation knob (gradually, between rounds) over two revolutions. I think I am still high.

Does this seem similar to anyone's experience? Thanks for any input.

.50 cal bore sized projectile jammed in TC Triumph

Looking for some suggestions as to how to remove a .50 cal bore sized projectile from my Thompson Triumph muzzleloader. Below are some details.

I just finished a week long elk hunt in Colorado, using my muzzleloader. CO disallows the use of sabots, pelletized powder, and optics, so I had to re-sight the smoke stick in with open sights and a bore sized projectile. I started off trying out the Hornady FTPs, since the Powerbelts I used last CO elk hunt, while accurate and put down an elk, did not expand properly and did not leave a blood trail. Problem was, the Hornady FTPs were hard to load into my barrel and were all over the place (sometimes not even on paper). That led me to try out Thor bullets. He's out of Montana, and sends you a sample sizing pack of four different sized .50 cal projectiles (in sizes .500, .501, .502 and .503). I measured up and found the right size, and ordered a 50 pack, and they fit perfectly and shot a 2.5" group. Great bullets. I shot a bull at 100 yards last week, double lung through shot, and he went about 10 yards and dropped like a ton of bricks. I reloaded my muzzleloader in case I approached the bull and needed a second shot, but never needed to do that, but when I went to remove my breach plug (and drained the powder) and pop out the projectile, it was stuck in there.

In hindsight, I wish I would have just shot the bullet out, but I knew I am supposed to be able to remove the powder and projectile on my TC Triumph, so I did that, and now I have the projectile stuck in there. I going to try spraying some PB Blaster in there tonight, but I'd really appreciate any suggestions anybody else has.

Thanks in advance.

Josh

22 long rifle ammo

Could someone explain to me why there is no 22 long rifle ammunition on the shelf of these retailers. I keep hearing that it is being horded by the consumer but that just doesn't make sense to me. I have not found any on the shelf in 6 years maybe longer. What happened to supply and demand, the price should go up if there is demand and a shortage of supply this would stop the hording by the consumer if that were the case.

This is the same for reloading supplies there is none on the shelf specifically brass.

Thank You

Montana Anyone

I might be heading to Montana pretty soon and I have room for at least one other guy and a dog. Bird numbers look pretty good this year. I was there in June and it looked like it could be the best year for birds in about 6+ years and local reports are all positive.

Right now the season is open for Sharptail Grouse, Hungarian Partridge, and Sage Grouse. Pheasant season doesn't open until the end of the second week in October. Not sure if I will stay that long but with another guy my schedule would be more open.

It should be a fairly inexpensive trip. The biggest expenses are typically gas and licenses. The reservation license is around $140 and there are plenty of birds to justify staying on the reservation which is huge. An additional State license is around $140 but isn't needed unless hunting off the reservation. I lived out there for four years and hunted nearly every day each hunting season I know the area and where the birds usually are. Also have some locals to hunt with and will probably meet up with another MS'er who is going to be camping nearby. Plan to hunt on and around the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in Northeast Montana.

The plan is to set-up a big tipi next to a small river and use that as a base camp. For the majority of food I'd have some local friends shoot a deer for me for camp meat and catch a few walleye if they are in the area this time of year. The town is only 15 miles away and has food, bars, and the periodic shower at a friends house.

It would be pretty nice if I could find someone to help with the gas and expenses. My schedule is pretty open so it doesn't matter if I stay a week or two weeks if I go. If things work out I would have to leave sometime in the next two weeks. I plan to bring one of my own dogs and transport a GSP from Michigan to a friend in Montana to give an idea of how much space is available. Plan to drive a 2002 Chevy Avalanche to give an idea of the space available. The tipi and some other gear is already in Montana.

Could be a pretty darn good fit for someone who has always wanted to go or someone pretty new to the hunting game who wants to learn some things and get experience. I won't try to bribe anyone by posting pictures of the area but quite a few Michigan Sportsman guys have hunted with me in Montana so there should be easy to find pictures. Let me know if it sounds appealing and we'll see if schedules match up.

Good hunt with great friends

My buddy Adam calls me Friday and invites me to hunt a field with him and his father. All good but I'm working a 12 hr 6:30-6:30 shift Friday night that kinda puts the kibosh on morning hunting. But no biggy. I met Adam on Friday afternoon and gave him my blind. Him and his dad set decoys and got the blinds brushed in so Saturday morning so I could just run out and jump in my layout. When I got out I hauled ass over to the field and it wasn't long after the fun started. Had our 6 birds by 7:44 AM. I'm not sure if a plan could come together any better than that. Thx Adam and Dan.

INFORM: Cervid Health and States Indemnity FY 2015

USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service sent this bulletin at 09/19/2014 05:22 PM EDT

Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Veterinary Services (VS) received a total of $3 million in appropriated funding to support cervid health activities in fiscal year (FY) 2014, and made approximately $1.0 million of this funding available for indemnity of chronic wasting disease (CWD) positive, suspect, and exposed farmed cervids. All of the available FY2014 indemnity funding was used to depopulate three CWD-infected herds. However, several States have asked about the availability of Federal indemnity funds for CWD-exposed animals in the future.

VS plans to offer Federal indemnity for CWD-exposed cervids beginning in FY2015. Briefly, we will prioritize the highest risk CWD-exposed animals for indemnity based on the availability of funding. Any newly reported CWD-positive herds will be considered for indemnity as they are identified, based first on funding availability and secondly on the risk presented by the herd.

We will reassess our fiscal year funding on a quarterly basis so that providing indemnity for exposed animals does not exhaust available funding early in the fiscal year. By taking this fiscally cautious approach, we hope to provide indemnity for positive herds identified later in the fiscal year while removing high-risk animals from the landscape as soon as possible to minimize the risk for disease spread. Further, removal and testing of these exposed animals will provide a better understanding of the disease risk presented by these animals/herds.

VS plans to work with our State and industry stakeholders on the criteria to assess the risk and on the process through which States can request this indemnity. These will be finalized in a VS Guidance Document in the near future. We look forward to working with you to implement this process in the coming year.

CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE CWD WISCONSIN Almond Deer (Buckhorn Flats) Farm Update DECEMBER 2011

The CWD infection rate was nearly 80%, the highest ever in a North American captive herd. RECOMMENDATION: That the Board approve the purchase of 80 acres of land for $465,000 for the Statewide Wildlife Habitat Program in Portage County and approve the restrictions on public use of the site.

SUMMARY:

*** We conclude that TSE infectivity is likely to survive burial for long time periods with minimal loss of infectivity and limited movement from the original burial site. However PMCA results have shown that there is the potential for rainwater to elute TSE related material from soil which could lead to the contamination of a wider area. These experiments reinforce the importance of risk assessment when disposing of TSE risk materials.

*** The results show that even highly diluted PrPSc can bind efficiently to polypropylene, stainless steel, glass, wood and stone and propagate the conversion of normal prion protein. For in vivo experiments, hamsters were ic injected with implants incubated in 1% 263K-infected brain homogenate. Hamsters, inoculated with 263K-contaminated implants of all groups, developed typical signs of prion disease, whereas control animals inoculated with non-contaminated materials did not.

CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE CWD

A FEW FINDINGS ;

Conclusions. To our knowledge, this is the first established experimental model of CWD in TgSB3985. We found evidence for co-existence or divergence of two CWD strains adapted to Tga20 mice and their replication in TgSB3985 mice. Finally, we observed phenotypic differences between cervid-derived CWD and CWD/Tg20 strains upon propagation in TgSB3985 mice. Further studies are underway to characterize these strains.

We conclude that TSE infectivity is likely to survive burial for long time periods with minimal loss of infectivity and limited movement from the original burial site. However PMCA results have shown that there is the potential for rainwater to elute TSE related material from soil which could lead to the contamination of a wider area. Our data establish that meadow voles are permissive to CWD via peripheral exposure route, suggesting they could serve as an environmental reservoir for CWD. Additionally, our data are consistent with the hypothesis that at least two strains of CWD circulate in naturally-infected cervid populations and provide evidence that meadow voles are a useful tool for CWD strain typing.

Conclusion. CWD prions are shed in saliva and urine of infected deer as early as 3 months post infection and throughout the subsequent >1.5 year course of infection. In current work we are examining the relationship of prionemia to excretion and the impact of excreted prion binding to surfaces and particulates in the environment.

Conclusion. CWD prions (as inferred by prion seeding activity by RT-QuIC) are shed in urine of infected deer as early as 6 months post inoculation and throughout the subsequent disease course. Further studies are in progress refining the real-time urinary prion assay sensitivity and we are examining more closely the excretion time frame, magnitude, and sample variables in relationship to inoculation route and prionemia in naturally and experimentally CWD-infected cervids.

Conclusions. Our results suggested that the odds of infection for CWD is likely controlled by areas that congregate deer thus increasing direct transmission (deer-to-deer interactions) or indirect transmission (deer-to-environment) by sharing or depositing infectious prion proteins in these preferred habitats. Epidemiology of CWD in the eastern U.S. is likely controlled by separate factors than found in the Midwestern and endemic areas for CWD and can assist in performing more efficient surveillance efforts for the region.

Conclusions. During the pre-symptomatic stage of CWD infection and throughout the course of disease deer may be shedding multiple LD50 doses per day in their saliva. CWD prion shedding through saliva and excreta may account for the unprecedented spread of this prion disease in nature.

DEFRA U.K. What is the risk of Chronic Wasting Disease CWD being introduced into Great Britain? A Qualitative Risk Assessment October 2012

snip...

In the USA, under the Food and Drug Administration’s BSE Feed Regulation (21 CFR 589.2000) most material (exceptions include milk, tallow, and gelatin) from deer and elk is prohibited for use in feed for ruminant animals. With regards to feed for non-ruminant animals, under FDA law, CWD positive deer may not be used for any animal feed or feed ingredients. For elk and deer considered at high risk for CWD, the FDA recommends that these animals do not enter the animal feed system. However, this recommendation is guidance and not a requirement by law.

Animals considered at high risk for CWD include:

1) animals from areas declared to be endemic for CWD and/or to be CWD eradication zones and

2) deer and elk that at some time during the 60-month period prior to slaughter were in a captive herd that contained a CWD-positive animal.

Therefore, in the USA, materials from cervids other than CWD positive animals may be used in animal feed and feed ingredients for non-ruminants.

The amount of animal PAP that is of deer and/or elk origin imported from the USA to GB can not be determined, however, as it is not specified in TRACES. It may constitute a small percentage of the 8412 kilos of non-fish origin processed animal proteins that were imported from US into GB in 2011.

*** Overall, therefore, it is considered there is a __greater than negligible risk___ that (nonruminant) animal feed and pet food containing deer and/or elk protein is imported into GB.

There is uncertainty associated with this estimate given the lack of data on the amount of deer and/or elk protein possibly being imported in these products.

snip...

36% in 2007 (Almberg et al., 2011). In such areas, population declines of deer of up to 30 to 50% have been observed (Almberg et al., 2011). In areas of Colorado, the prevalence can be as high as 30% (EFSA, 2011).

The clinical signs of CWD in affected adults are weight loss and behavioural changes that can span weeks or months (Williams, 2005). In addition, signs might include excessive salivation, behavioural alterations including a fixed stare and changes in interaction with other animals in the herd, and an altered stance (Williams, 2005). These signs are indistinguishable from cervids experimentally infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

Given this, if CWD was to be introduced into countries with BSE such as GB, for example, infected deer populations would need to be tested to differentiate if they were infected with CWD or BSE to minimise the risk of BSE entering the human food-chain via affected venison.

snip...

The rate of transmission of CWD has been reported to be as high as 30% and can approach 100% among captive animals in endemic areas (Safar et al., 2008).

snip...

In summary, in endemic areas, there is a medium probability that the soil and surrounding environment is contaminated with CWD prions and in a bioavailable form. In rural areas where CWD has not been reported and deer are present, there is a greater than negligible risk the soil is contaminated with CWD prion.

snip...

In summary, given the volume of tourists, hunters and servicemen moving between GB and North America, *** the probability of at least one person travelling to/from a CWD affected area and, in doing so, contaminating their clothing, footwear and/or equipment prior to arriving in GB is greater than negligible. For deer hunters, specifically, the risk is likely to be greater given the increased contact with deer and their environment. However, there is significant uncertainty associated with these estimates.

snip...

Therefore, it is considered that farmed and park deer may have a higher probability of exposure to CWD transferred to the environment than wild deer given the restricted habitat range and higher frequency of contact with tourists and returning GB residents.

snip...

Susceptibility of UK red deer (Cervus alaphus elaphus) to oral BSE transmission Project Code: M03024

02/08/2011

The project confirmed that U.K red deer are susceptible to both oral and intra-cerebral inoculation with the cattle BSE agent. Six clinically positive (from 26-42 months post inoculation) i.c inoculated and one (56 months post inoculation) orally dosed deer that tested positive for TSE by immunohistochemistry and Western blotting using several primary antibodies demonstrated widespread accumulation of disease specific prion protein in the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and enteric nervous system but none in lymphoreticular system. All showed several brain sites positive for disease specific prion protein and presented immunohistochemistry and Western blotting phenotypes with similarities to BSE in sheep, goats and cattle but unlike those seen in chronic wasting disease (CWD) in elk or scrapie in sheep. The vacuolar pathology and distribution of disease specific prion protein in red deer resembled that of CWD in most major respects however we have shown that BSE can be clearly differentiated from CWD by existing immunohistochemical and biochemical methods that are in routine use.

The knowledge gained as a result of this work will permit rapid and accurate diagnosis should a TSE ever be detected in European red deer and will also enable effective disease control methods to be quickly put in place.

*** The potential impact of prion diseases on human health was greatly magnified by the recognition that interspecies transfer of BSE to humans by beef ingestion resulted in vCJD. While changes in animal feed constituents and slaughter practices appear to have curtailed vCJD, there is concern that CWD of free-ranging deer and elk in the U.S. might also cross the species barrier. Thus, consuming venison could be a source of human prion disease. Whether BSE and CWD represent interspecies scrapie transfer or are newly arisen prion diseases is unknown. Therefore, the possibility of transmission of prion disease through other food animals cannot be ruled out. There is evidence that vCJD can be transmitted through blood transfusion. There is likely a pool of unknown size of asymptomatic individuals infected with vCJD, and there may be asymptomatic individuals infected with the CWD equivalent. These circumstances represent a potential threat to blood, blood products, and plasma supplies.

Turnips turning brown

I'm tring to figure out why the turnip leafs have turning brown ?

I did plant them a little early. First week of July

The reason for the early plantain is that last year they did not develop the big turnips like in the past ( planted late July early aug ). I wasn't sure what was the cause. The late plant or to much seed.

The other 2 plots next to the turnips are planted with winter greens and planted on the same day are not turning brown

What is the cause and will the deer still eat the leafs after the first frost

Brown trout?

Gents, recently I spent a total of five days chasing the elusive salmon on the Big Manistee and had an experience I'd like to share with you, and hopefully learn from it.

We fished from my boat hard every day, early and late, and became aware of feeding fish around us during the prime times. These were definitely not salmon, and had to be some type of trout as they were taking emerging and/or egg laying winged insects (sulphurs?) from the surface. Some of the "rises" were spectacular, with the whole fish coming out of the water.

Here's the rub. As it started to sink in that I (or we) should ditch the salmon hunting routine and start working for these trout instead. With only two fish to show for 5 hard days of work, this wasn't too hard a concept to get my head wrapped around. Unfortunately, neither of us had come prepared to make the adjustment "mid stream" and had to put off the fly fishing until the next trip (or next Fall).

From what I witnessed over these two trips, this body of water is full of good sized browns and maybe even some decent rainbows just waiting for our offering at the end of a fly line. Any comments, experiences?

Thanks

Jay

BSR fishing report, PM, and Betsie - salmonfishology

Gents, been here since 9/17 and punching out in a.m. BSR has maybe, just maybe 30-40 fish in entire river and water is HIGH!!! All the blow and rain last night changed nothing....still same number of fish..maybe less....57 degrees at bath house, big storm last night, and it is 9/20, so form your own salmonfishology on why only a scant # of fish. Went to Betsie yesterday and scouted area near M115. Yes. few small single fish here and there and a guy here and there with 1 on stringer. Checked out PM in lower areak... saw a fish flop here and there but empty stringers guys. Yes, I don't live here and I drive 300 plus miles to get here every year. I am sure the local guys have their holes and can still pluck em out but for me I came up zilch. If u are driving a distance to come up it is really not worth it. Save your dough for another year. Worse than 2010 run!!!! When alewives come back..which I hope they will...the kings will hopefully be back. Hate to be a Debbie downer but I speak the truth bros. Oh, PM lake had 1 boat tonight on it!

Reports for yall

Hit the pm and another river I think should b an unmen. Ffrom15th-19th moderate pressure, slow fishing. I would say less than half the fish at this time last year. Landed 30 fish between 3 guys. I know this sounds pretty good but last year I landed over 100 alone.and I caught more than anyone I saw this year.Hate to say it but the "slow reports" are true, very true. Heard some locals sayin eggs didn't develop at a normal rate because of below av. Water temps this summer. So run is late. Had a blast though. Only 362 days from next salmon trip! Cannot wait! One positive note, saw less trash than ever! Pm at twin bridges was very clean compaired to normal. Skein is still very tight! Which by the way I have extra uncured skein that is in good shape if any one is headed up from s/e mi or n/w ohio. I'm 15 mins off us 23 and 5 mins off us223anybody needs some shout by Monday or it's cat food.....send a pm for eggs! Have a great 2014 run and respect our beautiful rivers!

Disappointing Reports

WOW! Never saw so many dismal reports this far into September before. I read somewhere on these forums back in August some speculation that, because of the strange weather, the Salmon run may be one BIG push all of a sudden this year. I prefer to believe this because it makes sense to me. I'm sure it won't be long before someone starts saying the sky is falling. I am also sure that someone else will get on here and say " I've been killing them since August! " Of course they won't say WHERE they've been killing them. I think there will be one major push this year and I sure hope I'm there for it. What are YOUR thoughts?

So Far So Bad

9/19 Sturgeon Report

Got out on the North Channel with Caffineforall tonight about 8pm there was a boat in our usual spot so we tried down farther. In an hour all we caught was a 4" rocky so we moved back up towards the launch.

Was about 20 minutes without a bite when I said we found another dead spot and right then Caffine got a bite. He pulled back on the rod and there was nothing there, so he dropped it back down. A couple seconds later the fish hit again and it was hooked this time :). The fish immediately started taking line and the fight was on. It took a bit, but the fish finally jumped and we knew it was a 50+ inch fish. After 15 minutes of a very good fight, his back wasn't doing good, so Tyler took over for the last 5 minutes or so. We finally got the fish into the net and over the side of the boat.

It measured in at 66" and had a girth of 31" just a bit behind the head. I could get the tape to slide down a little further where it was more than likely a bit bigger. The Michigan DNR chart puts the fish at 95lbs with a 31" girth and if it was 32" and even 100lbs. This fish was a tank, it was quite a bit thicker than the 65" fish we caught 3 weeks ago.

A big congrats to Caffineforall on his new PB sturgeon and to even be able to fight this fish after coming off back surgery a month or so ago.

9/19 Sturgeon Report

Marina Panfish.

Just a quick report. I took my son out to teach him some new techniques for panfish while prospecting some of the south end Anchor Bay marinas. 5-7pm ended up with 13 gills over 8" and some mid sized perch. No crappie today although we had some earlier in the week. Went through 30-40 others to get the 13. Sorry no pics. Went home to continue teaching him fly tying so no time for cleaning. Surface water is still really warm. Weed beds loaded with bait fish. Just thought I'd post a quick report for those that enjoy panfishing.

Choke!

Saw a first in high school football tonight. I won't mention team names but, this was a truly classless, dangerous act of anger by an out-of-control individual.

Visiting team was getting spanked by home team 24-0 in 1st half. Home team runner is tackled around the neck by visiting team defender. Visiting team defender literally puts a choke hold around the neck of the runner (aka World Wrestling Federation). Despite continuous efforts of referees, they could not pry defender off runner. Finally, players and refs frantically pry defender's arm off from around the runner's choking neck-hold. Runner is out cold, 100% UNCONSCIOUS! Lays on ground for 10 minutes gathering breath.

Referees toss the defender out of the game (obviously) but, he keeps charging back in to the fray wanting to continue the fight. Coaches and players had trouble holding the strangler down. Finally, he is escorted out of the stadium and to the school's bus.

Me thinks that this horrible spate of anger might end this jackass' high school career either by the MHSAA and/or his own school and, might possibly result in criminal charges. Folks, it was THAT ugly.

This was beyond mid-field bickering, sucker-punching or even a team brawl. This player crossed way, way, way over the line. Too bad. So Sad.

I'm at a lost on the grand down town

Ok I live a few block from the 6th street dam. So I went to give it a try. Wow I am lost. Never have I seen people fish the way they are down here at the dam. 7foot leaders sinker hooked right up to the three way swivel and just a tiny bit of bait. Looks to be maybe yarn. So small was hard to see.

I grew up up north on the east side and did my fishing on Huron. So this is all new to me.

Maybe I could tag along with someone one afternoon.

JV Tonight

Seems odd but if you think about it, tonight may be one of the biggest starts of jvs career. I don't think expecting vintage jv is realistic at this point, but he needs to find a way to go out and give us 7 innings with 2 or 3 runs. I have noticed brad seems to have developed a much quicker hook with him, rather than letting jv "work out of trouble". Seems brad learned something there. If jv sucks yet again tonight what do the Tigers do with him? How many more times can they run him out there this year and expect different results?

Broadhead Identity?

Hey guys, last year my wife sent me pics of this bow from a yardsale. Its an Golden Eagle splitfire 32 RTX? It came ready to shoot, even came with the release and 10 arrows with 2 broadheads. If memory serves, I got it for $75. String and all looks like new. I told her buy it, these things come in handy with two boys ages 12 & 13. Anyway, can anyone identify this broadhead and maybe tell me if this would work on a low poundage bow. My son is shooting a Bear Apprentice 2, not sure on the poundage as we've been cranking it up over the summer.

gun season fruit or nut trees?

I've been thinking about what kinds of trees I should plant near one of my gun stands that is located in a grassy swale? What kinds of fruit or nut trees hold their fruit until November 15th or later? What kind of trees do you plant near your gun blinds? I know Goldrush apple tree's hold their apples really late but I also know they're susceptible to CAR and I've got a lot of cedar trees in the area. Are there any crabapples or pears that hold their fruit late into the season?

Fish Point Conditions

Being one of the lucky ones for opening day, I am wondering what the water levels would be to support 50 parties. I scouted a bit during the Teal season and crops looked the best I've seen in years, but I seriously doubt it will be flooded enough for everyone to get a quality hunt. Does anyone have any input?

Taking a chance, delete if it crosses the line.

I have been spanked a couple times and I hope this doesnt end my 13 yrs here. but I feel too strongly about what I do and the people who need it to not at least try.

This is purely medical, and if spreading this news isnt worth losing my place here, at least it confirms pretty much what I have spent yrs trying to share. It excites me that 400 doctors paid money to learn about it and are asking when the next one will be and where .

"The event was organized by Martha Montemayor and Sarara Corva, who respectively directed and coordinated the event. In a brief interview, Corva stated her goal was to bring minds together to learn and spread information to the next generation of doctors, many of whom knew nothing about actual treatment of patients with cannabis. Their objectives were undeniably exceeded, as behind the scenes many doctors were expressing their elation at finally learning how to more effectively help their patients. Both organizers delivered great presentations of their own to an audience consisting of around 400 doctors and medical professionals".

Hope I am here to see replies in the morning.

Cervid Health Business Plan Fiscal Years 2014 to 2018 APHIS

Cervid Health Business Plan Fiscal Years 2014 to 2018 Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Veterinary Services

snip...

c. Funding sources

Cervid Health Programs are funded through the equine, cervid, small ruminant health (ECSR) line. The total APHIS FY 2014 ECSR budget is $19. 5 million. Congressional language accompanying the FY 2014 appropriations specifies that APHIS should spend $3. 0 million for cervid health activities.

III. Value of Program Objectives:

In 2007, the cervid industry in the United States included 5,600 deer farms and 1,900 elk farms with an economic value of $894 million that supported nearly 30,000 jobs. The recently conducted 2012 National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) census will provide important updates on cervid industry statistics.

The Cervid Health Program protects the health of cervids and improves the quality, productivity and economic viability of the cervid industry. CWD, TB, and brucellosis remain important disease threats to cervid populations. Outbreaks of these diseases could have serious consequences for the cervid industry and allied stakeholders. APHIS’ CWD HCP, cervid TB herd accreditation, and proposed brucellosis herd certification programs are essential to reducing and mitigating those consequences.

A key value of the cervid health programs is to reduce losses to the cervid industry and to reduce the overall cost to the Federal government to respond to outbreaks. In the past 10 years, many CWD infected and exposed cervid farms were depopulated with Federal indemnity at a significant cost to the industry, States, and Federal government. The cervid TB herd accreditation program has reduced disease transmission in cervid populations and in other domestic species that could have resulted in larger and more serious disease outbreaks.

An additional value of the cervid health program is to promote and facilitate domestic and international trade of animals and cervid-derived products. Since the identification of CWD, many international markets have refused farmed cervids or cervid-derived products from the United States. The U.S. cervid industry cannot expand its markets without USDA animal health programs to certify their animals to have low disease risk and/or disease freedom. The Cervid Health Program promotes the opportunity for the cervid industry to start competing in international trade again.

Lastly, TB and brucellosis are zoonotic diseases which can be transmitted from farmed cervids to other livestock, wildlife, and people. Although CWD has not been recognized as a prion disease transmissible to people, it can be transmitted between farmed cervids to wild cervid populations and it persists in the environment. A direct benefit of the Cervid Health Program is to safeguard public health, prevent transmission at the domestic animal-wildlife interface, and reduce environmental contamination.

*** Susceptibility of UK red deer (Cervus alaphus elaphus) to oral BSE transmission Project Code: M03024 ***

Negative controls and the remaining 5 orally dosed deer culled at 72mpi tested negative by IHC and Western blot however analysis of the PrP ORF of these deer (kindly carried out by Wilfred Goldmann of the Roslin NPD) identified a Q to E polymorphism at codon 226 that may influence the efficiency of oral transmission (not published).

In the experimental BSE challenge of red deer six out of six deer succumbed to BSE when challenged by intracerebral routes but only one of six deer challenged by the oral route succumbed to infection. Deer killed at 190 days or 365 days post oral challenge showed no evidence of abnormal PrP accumulation when tested by immunocytochemistry. The PrP gene of red deer includes a Q to E polymorphism at codon 226. The table shows the distribution of these codon 226 polymorphisms within experimental challenge groups.

Immunohistochemical and biochemical characteristics of BSE and CWD in experimentally infected European red deer (Cervus elaphus elaphus)

Abstract

Background: The cause of the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) epidemic in the United Kingdom (UK) was the inclusion of contaminated meat and bone meal in the protein rations fed to cattle. Those rations were not restricted to cattle but were also fed to other livestock including farmed and free living deer. Although there are no reported cases to date of natural BSE in European deer, BSE has been shown to be naturally or experimentally transmissible to a wide range of different ungulate species. Moreover, several species of North America's cervids are highly susceptible to chronic wasting disease (CWD), a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) that has become endemic. Should BSE infection have been introduced into the UK deer population, the CWD precedent could suggest that there is a danger for spread and maintenance of the disease in both free living and captive UK deer populations. This study compares the immunohistochemical and biochemical characteristics of BSE and CWD in experimentally-infected European red deer (Cervus elpahus elaphus).

Results: After intracerebral or alimentary challenge, BSE in red deer more closely resembled natural infection in cattle rather than experimental BSE in small ruminants, due to the lack of accumulation of abnormal PrP in lymphoid tissues. In this respect it was different from CWD, and although the neuropathological features of both diseases were similar, BSE could be clearly differentiated from CWD by immunohistochemical and Western blotting methods currently in routine use.

Conclusion: Red deer are susceptible to both BSE and CWD infection, but the resulting disease phenotypes are distinct and clearly distinguishable.

Clinical disease

All six deer challenged i.c. with BSE developed clinical disease between 794 and 1260 days post-inoculation with a mean incubation period of 1027 days. A detailed description of the clinical signs was provided in an earlier report [8]. Briefly, affected deer showed variable degrees of ataxia, anorexia, circling and apparent blindness, together with failure of seasonal change of coat, weight loss and 'panic attacks'. In addition, one of six red deer orally dosed with BSE developed clinical disease 1740 days after challenge, and this animal presented with a short clinical duration of two days; the other five deer from this group remain healthy at the time of writing (65 months after challenge). Sequential rectal biopsies taken at five different time points from orally and i.c. inoculated deer were negative for PrPd.

All four deer orally challenged with CWD started to show behavioural changes between 577 and 586 days post challenge;

these progressed to definite neurological disease between 742 and 760 days post-challenge (Table 1).

Clinical signs were similar to the BSE challenged deer and included nervousness, weight loss, excessive salivation, roughness of coat, and progressive ataxia. All these CWD inoculated deer showed PrPd accumulation in the secondary follicles of rectal biopsies taken at 7 months post infection.

Conclusion

European red deer are susceptible to infection with the cattle BSE agent, not only by the intra-cerebral but also by the oral route, and although the clinical signs and spong- iform change are similar to those of CWD in the same species, these two infections can be easily differentiated. The lack of lymphoid involvement, the PrPd truncation pattern both "in vivo" and "in vitro", and the predominantly intracellular accumulation of PrPd are features of deer BSE that are in contrast with those of deer CWD. However, only one of six deer developed disease after alimentary exposure to 25 g of a BSE brain pool homogenate after an incubation period of nearly 5 years; this suggests a strong species barrier but if a TSE in European red deer should ever be identified then BSE/CWD discrimination would be an urgent priority. To determine whether there are potential naturally occurring BSE-like strains and to determine the degree to which there is strain variation, it would be necessary to examine many more naturally occurring CWD cases. These results will support the ongoing European surveillance for natural TSEs in red deer and the further assessment of potential risk to human health.
