Gents, recently I spent a total of five days chasing the elusive salmon on the Big Manistee and had an experience I'd like to share with you, and hopefully learn from it.
We fished from my boat hard every day, early and late, and became aware of feeding fish around us during the prime times. These were definitely not salmon, and had to be some type of trout as they were taking emerging and/or egg laying winged insects (sulphurs?) from the surface. Some of the "rises" were spectacular, with the whole fish coming out of the water.
Here's the rub. As it started to sink in that I (or we) should ditch the salmon hunting routine and start working for these trout instead. With only two fish to show for 5 hard days of work, this wasn't too hard a concept to get my head wrapped around. Unfortunately, neither of us had come prepared to make the adjustment "mid stream" and had to put off the fly fishing until the next trip (or next Fall).
From what I witnessed over these two trips, this body of water is full of good sized browns and maybe even some decent rainbows just waiting for our offering at the end of a fly line. Any comments, experiences?
Thanks
Jay
