D River Weekend of 3/26/16*

What's everyone's thoughts on the condition of the river and the impact that this weeks weather will have on the fishing this upcoming weekend? Going to be blowing pretty hard today and tomorrow, with some rain and snow mixed in, but looks like its going to start calming down Friday. Saturday and Sunday are looking pretty nice at this point. I'll be out both days regardless, but wanted to get the opinions of some of you more experienced guys on what impact this weather will have.

Crawler harnesses

Line= 20# Trilene Flourocarbon
Hook= #2 Octopus by Gamakatsu
Beads= 1 bead at head of setup ( typically I make this a black bead believing it gives them something to hone in on as far as the crawler head causing less short bites. Then a quick change clevise, I use a larger size making it easier to change Colorado blades. Follow up with 7 beads of choice in all same color or 2 seperate colors matching blades.
Lenght= More people probably dispute this than anything, I tie approximately 30" total lenght. Again personal prefernce.
I personally like a 2 snelled hooks about 3" apart. This allows the back of the crawler more natural action. This also causes for more misses due to short bites. To each there own, weigh the difference make a choice.
Lastly get some "tackle buddy" to put them on. Nothing worse than spending time on the water and trying to untangle a rats nest of harnesses.
Redneck outfitters has a dive chart you can print and laminate if pulling behind inlines weights.

seat covers

I was going to put this in the off roading section but figured it would get more views here. I have a 2010 f150 and my drivers seat is starting to rip on the seam from me sliding in and out of it. I was going to get Hatchi bottoms when I first got the truck but I never did and now it appears they have went out of business. Does anyone have any recommendations? I am not really sold on neoprene how durable is it? I work construction so durability is a concern of mine. Just looking for what people have and like/dislike. Thanks for the reply's.

Disc or tiller

hunterrep, with your turf tires, a rototiller may be a better bet. But I'm no expert on this.

Discs, the heavier the better. Best are wheel-type, hydraulic hose lift (not the rockshaft-lift), double gang, box framed.

With rotary tillers, get a good one. Woods or Deere, and stay away from the Tractor Supply junk. I've beat the crap out of my JD 673 for 10 seasons now without a hiccup. Not many pieces of foodplotting gear I can say that about.

Anyone planning on heading down?

I'll be down there, but debating which launch - fenwick / turtle creek for the reefs or catawba / mazurik for getting out by the islands...

Any thoughts?

I'm almost leaning towards catawba due to proximity to both, but its an extra 20 - 30 minute ride... I hate getting up at 4am :)

Detroit public schools

Let's see if we can shed some light on the DPS.

Average funding per student

$14k at 33 students per class.

$462,000 in revenue.

$40k for the poor teacher. I fully support paying them more.

That leaves $422,000.

They don't give the students any supplies anymore basically at all so....

Let's spend the rest of the $422,000

Do they really need need more funding?

When do we hold these crazy out of control bloated systems accountable? They created this mess.

Year round coyote season poll, please go to vote

I thought I might pass on what I was told by the DNR Furbearer biologist as the reason that the season was put on coyotes way back when. I am sorry but the name of the biologist escapes me. He ended up transferring to Gladstone a few years later.

He told me that it was put on because of hound hunters saying they were hunting coyotes when they were actually running bear and killing them for the gall bladders.

Sounded like a lame excuse but that is what he said. It must be that the bear killers have quit are thinking of opening it back up to all year.

At the same time a CO friend told me that he got a questionnaire asking for his thoughts on banning the sale of all animal glands. When confronted with this at a SMTA meeting the biologist denied it. I told him I put more faith in my CO friend than what he had to say.

Finally!

After four years of fishing the D good and hard, I finally got my 10+ that I've been looking for. I usually release hens, but this one I had to keep. She weighed in at 11.3 when I first caught her and 11.1 when I got home about 4 hours after catching her. What a great feeling. Caught 7, kept 3 males and the big girl. All fish came on black ww tipped with minnow in 28-35 fow. Big girl came from 34 fow. Thanks to the guy in the green tracker (not sure if you're a member on here) who was having a terrible day. Poor guy snapped the cable on his tm at the launch and was working like hell to catch some fish and was generous enough to snap some pictures for me as I was fishing solo.

Finally!

Ausable Whirlpool drift boat to Oscoda question...

Also, there aren't any 20 foot deep holes from the Whirlpool down. I only know of 2 spots on the river that are that deep, and they are both above Whirlpool. There are some real deep long bends, which don't typically hold a lot of fish. The RR Trestle is pretty deep, but the deepest part of it can't really be fished due to super-heavy current. Find some outside bends, and try bottom bouncing. Or drop back plugs a little out from a bank that drops straight down, and see what you can find. Watch out for wood.

Flint Task Force Findings

http://ift.tt/1q29fRI

FLINT, MI – Primary responsibility for the Flint water crisis lies with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, according to the final report of a governor-appointed task force examining the city's water woes.

The report, released Wednesday, March 23, includes 36 findings and 44 recommendations for state and local officials following the crisis.

UPDATE: Flint water task force calls for review of emergency manager law

The 62-page report chides the DEQ's handling of the crisis, and knocks the ongoing effort of state officials to place blame for the crisis at multiple levels of government.

"Even as the state is aggressively engaged in mitigation efforts in Flint, the statement that the Flint water crisis was a local, state, and federal failure implies that blame is attributable equally to all three levels of government," the report claims. "Primary responsibility for the water contamination in Flint lies with MDEQ."

The report also blames the Environmental Protection Agency of delaying enforcement of the Safe Drinking Water Act and Lead and Copper Rule, which prolonged the effects of the water crisis.

Ultimately, accountability for executive office decisions rests with Gov. Rick Snyder, the report concludes.

Snyder is expected to meet Thursday morning with media members at Mott Community College to discuss the report's findings.

The report goes on to acknowledge the steps the governor's office has taken to rectify the situation, including the state declaration of emergency, the establishment of both the Flint Water Inter-Agency Coordinating Council and Mission Flint, additional funding for addressing the health issues faced by lead-poisoned children in Flint, partial reimbursement for water bills paid during the time of lead contamination and progress on a plan to replace lead service lines.

"It was a catastrophic failure by government for the people of Flint and, most disturbingly, their complaints were dismissed for far too long," task force co-chair Chris Kolb said. "One of the biggest lessons we hope to impart in our report is the need for government leaders to listen to their constituents; in Flint that didn't happen."

The task force has interviewed 63 people, deliberated 20 times and reviewed tens of thousands of the emails released by Snyder's office. In addition to reviewing crisis actions, the group has been considering long-term financing models for a more robust health public program.

Snyder appointed the task force in October to review "actions regarding water use and testing in Flint" and to make recommendations for future guidelines.

The governor has been receptive to recommendations made by the group so far, but state Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich, D-Flint, and others have cautioned that the task force is limited by lack of subpoena power and is not requiring sworn testimony.

In December, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Director Dan Wyant resigned after the task force laid most of the blame for the city's water crisis at the feet of his agency.

Elevated blood lead levels were found in some the city's youngest residents after the city began using the Flint River as its drinking water source in April 2014. Corrosive river water caused lead to leach from pipes and plumbing after DEQ officials told the city water department that corrosion control was not needed. The switch was made in an effort to save money while the city was being run by a state-appointed emergency manager.

According to the report, the emergency managers "had the responsibility to ensure that Flint water system operations were adequately resourced and supported by personnel and consultants with adequate training and experience."

The report also concluded that the decision to switch the source of the city's drinking water was made by the state-appointed emergency managers, not local officials.

"Although it is true that some locally elected officials supported, acknowledged, embraced, and even celebrated some of the decisions, the decisions were not theirs to make," the report states. "The state-appointed EMs made the decisions."

Former emergency manager Ed Kurtz authorized the use of the river as the water source, the report states.

Earlier reports from the task force also made multiple recommendations to the governor in response to the city's water crisis, including recommending the state seek help from the federal government and independent experts to restore faith in the city's troubled drinking water system.

Members of the state task force include Sikkema of Public Sector Consultants, Chris Kolb of the Michigan Environmental Council, Dr. Matthew Davis of the University of Michigan Health System, Eric Rothstein of the Galardi Rothstein Group and Dr. Lawrence Reynolds of Mott Children's Hospital.

It's Try and Hug a Dictator Day

Post #5 suggests "A Picture is Worth A Thousand Words".

I see that here regularly. I, for one, sometimes think it is used as sort of an excuse, a lazy, dodgy attempt to convey an argument which isn't clear enough, complete enough, or articulate enough to be persuasive. So the last resort is to make it a comic, a cartoon, a photo, or a meme.

Or,alternatively, the originator of the post simply doesn't KNOW a thousand words.

Hard to say.

2013 Lund Impact SS - LOADED!

Makes me sick to see this!!

Its more than the law. I just said that because its a fact and easy for everyone to understand.

I don't know why they are what you call sacred, but I, for one, love the challenge of targeting and catching them fairly regular. Its nice that I can go out and catch one or maybe two in a trip. To me it feels good to catch and release them unharmed.

Can you provide data on which lakes have had fishing destroyed by musky and/or pike?

Just FYI, some of the best musky lakes are also awesome walleye lakes...

I accidentally damage my lower unit on my 85hp.Johnson . I bought a horizontal shaft for it from a marina in Conn. Come to find out the virtical shaft is damaged and to make maters worse some seals needs to be replaced . My marine mechanic said it would be cheaper to just buy a re-built lower out board unit. If I did that I would be out the cost of the horizontal shaft about $375.00 . I need an honest opinion . I'm on a limited income but I want to save our ship .it's my SOS call out to Michigan -Sportsman family and friends .

No time to try other colors or styles due to time crunch! I'll be out in the rain tomorrow morning from sunrise till noon and will have a report to follow! Good luck out there boys be safe!

❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️

Warning: potentially disturbing info included in this post

Ok, so we had our hopes up that Dad was in fact NOT in the Saginaw River. However, that MIGHT not be the case. :(

I spoke to the man that lead the first two of the six K-9 units on Friday this afternoon. Both of his dogs (strictly trained for body recovery situations) independently showed high interest at the location his group was expecting the most likely spot for evidence of a body in the water near Dad's work. With all three K-9 units from Gennesse K-9's officially showing indication on the cement under Vet's bridge on Monday... This gentleman is fairly confident that Dad really is in the water.

He went in extreme detail (upon my request) to describe the science behind all of this and explained where Dad's body could be right now. Working with a credible hydrologist, he believes that Dad WAS potentially in the location where the very accurate side sonar looked yesterday due to the slight indication (interest) his dogs showed at the shoreline near Defoe Park and the official indication the 3 K-9 units showed under Vet's Bridge. However, due to the temperature of the water, a body would have already began to rise to the surface when they were scanning.

He firmly believes that Dad's body is on it's way to the surface... Thus has traveled out of the area they looked because of the current. :(

We know this is a lot to ask but if you think you can handle seeing the worse-case scenario, please keep your eyes on the water for the ENTIRE river north of Vet's Bridge... All the way to the mouth and beyond. He said it would be very difficult to spot... You would see three points of contact (back of head and both shoulders).

If this man is correct and Dad is in the river, he will surface anywhere between now to April 3rd based on the depth and flow of the river.

There is only a 12-36 hour window on average for a body to remain at the surface so please, please keep your eyes on the water.

If you choose to participate in this visual water search, we do ask for you to do this search on land... Not on a boat. In fact, please stay out of the water because a body will not surface if the upper torso is damaged.

We hope and pray (and pray and pray and pray) that he isn't in the river... but Heaven forbid he is, my brother and I (along with all our family & friends) truly need closure.

This news just made me absolutely sick today...

Access?

I am new to trout fishing and stream fishing overall especially wading. I am looking to fish multiple areas in central Michigan (Beaverton, Gladwin and maybe Roscommon area if I can get long weekend). I have been looking for public access points on many of the rivers up in that area and cannot seem to find any information on them since they are smaller rivers. I was wondering how I would access them? Am I allowed to access them from any bridge that crosses over them? I have read the guide and cannot seem to find anything on it other then the rights to a fisher wading. I am getting really excited for this upcoming season since I have trout fished since I was 12. Gonna be lots of learning since I virtually have no idea what I am doing. Additionally, I am not looking for specific access spot just some general knowledge on how I can get to the rivers since I will be wading them.
