You should judge your capabilities on how many pieces of shot you can put in a 10" circle. When the number drops below 100, you're gambling taking a pot shot at that range.
You're gonna get different answers here because opinions vary and a lot depends on shot size and shot composition.
Most casual turkey hunters with casual setups have no business shooting at a bird beyond 40 yard, especially since #6 lead drops below the magical 2.5 ftlbs at about 37 yards.
