Weekend Report

I had the fortune of fishing both days this weekend. Fished out of Gambils both days, launching at about 5am each day. Great sunrises both days. Fished west of 1/2 on Saturday, fish were 16 - 19, numerous throwbacks. Had our 10 at 11:10. Best luck was on DLR's at 60 feet back, about 2 mph.

On Sunday we fished north of 1/2, 1.8 - 2.1 mph, fish were 18 - 22, not many throwbacks. DDHJ12's 55 feetback as well as crawlers on inlines, fished 4 ft off bottom. Had our 10 by 9am.

SCR Bass Fishing Techniques????

Hey guys

Been fishing/following recent bass tournaments and hearing a lot of anglers fishing the SCR for bass. I have fished the SCR extensively for 40 years for walleye but never for bass. What techniques do people use for bass fishing on SCR? Specifically what depths, what type/weight of lure? Do people vertical jig or cast? Sorry for all the dumb questions I'm just perplexed on how to start bass fishing SCR. I feel comfortable finding the spots just need a little/lot a help on technique. Feel free to PM and we can swap information being I know just about everything regarding fishing except bass fishing on SCR lol.

Thanks

what do the temps do for the hex hatch?

temps will turn off a spinnerfall correct? im wondering about the actual hatch. will temps effect that as well? looking at next week. i can choose a couple nights and i see the forecast is warmer and stormier early in the week but cooler and less chance of storms later in the week. quite a bit cooler looks like. prolly only get out these couple nights for fly fishing this year so which nights would you choose? plan on flyfishing the manistee and trying to get into some hex...thanks.

Where to be at dusk?

On Thursday 6-26-14 I was fishing out of FF. A dismal evening going 1 for 3. Fish seemed to be scattered all over with the 52 degree surface temp. and 46 temp. 35' down. Fished in 100-400 fow. There were a lot of fish between 50'-70' when we were in around 400 fow. But could not get them to go. We opted to go in to 120- 140 fow for the sun down bite. Did not get even a knock off at dusk. My question is should I have stayed over the fish we were marking at 400 fow or what would you do in that scenario?

Au Gres 6/27 and 28

We have had two great days so far this weekend. Took a 2 man Friday, lines In the water by 630am, 3oz BB and meat, at 1.5mph color didn't matter. Also took a cat and 15 farm animals, one perch, and one sucker and took 5 shorts to. It was a busy day, pulled lines at noon.

Today we decided to launch out of tawas and make the run down, well worth it. Lines in the water by 7 had 8 in the boat by 9. Had to work for the last 2. But we were done my 1030. 50fof, 3oz BB on the bottom, purple was hot today. Also ran two riggers with harness about 10ft behind the ball. We took 5 of our 10 off the riggers 40 foot down. The rigger brought are biggest fish, one 26" and the rest were 22 to 24". We had one nice box today.

Hopefully tomorrow will follow suit!

Just wondering how much to charge?

I take different guys out all the time and don't charge anything. However, I have a few friends and we go quite often and they insist on paying, thank God. So what should I charge?

Thursdays outing was $80 for car gas, boat gas, oil and launch fee. There was three of us. Should I split it in three or split it in two and consider my fee wear and tear on the boat and car. 120 miles round trip and 30 miles on the boat. Just wondering.

With the tournament launching out of the DNR launch, the wife and I launch at Northport this morning. We ran around the nets headed to where we met Frank P1 yesterday, only deeper water. I ran some of my old waypoints and came across P1 just setting up as we were setting down and setting up. First 3 rods in the water, 3 hook ups just as fast, a real triple. Cherry was still setting the one rod when it got hit. In not to short order we got 2 more keepers and then 7 or 8 shorts. In 1 1/2 hrs we had 9 keepers, took about an hour to get one more keeper, a lot more shorts in the mean time. We were working on getting that last keeper when P1 stated they had 17 and almost done. A great day on the Bay! It's been a great few days coming back up here. This time my 91 yr old father came up ( he doesn't fish) and spent time watching birds in Tawas, taking walks etc as He and my mom who used to come up here and stay with me when I would prefish for the tourney's. HE has not been able to get back up here for 9 yrs, he LOVED getting back up here. A big thanks to Frank for his help, and he now has a new weapon in catching walleye and cutting his crawler usage in at least half, probably a lot more. We got a few on his new secret weapon  they do work! It will be a long time before I will be able to fish again, so this was an excellent trip.

Stony Point

My buddy Bob and I fished off Stony Point this morning. We limited out by 9:30am with our biggest fish going about 6 pounds. A lot of nice eaters today around 3 pounds.

Greasy chicken wing blade from Wolverine Tackle with orange and yellow beads was a good combo. Bob had a purple claw blade with white beads and a single purple bead in the middle that was also hot.

The weeds are a little higher, so we only were letting our harnesses back 35' to the Off Shore in-boards.

Go get em while the summers here!

When searching for walleye on lake erie?

When you are in search mode out on the Erie looking for the walleye, what is your go to spread (what do you start with)?

Do you just use different colors of harnesses, or hard bodies? Or do mix it all up? Everything close, spread wide, on the bottom or different depths?

If you are only using 3 to 6 lines, what variations would you use while searching.

It’s a big question with lots of answers, huh? And I’m sure there are a lot of different answers.

Now I just have to find some time this weekend and go to my uncles farm and snipe some house sparrows and starlings.

Hopefully someday I'll be allowed to hunt squirrels with it; at least that's what I bought it for. :) Maybe someday....

Just got my deer feedr and a few questions?

Hey guys just got my deer feeder and was wondering what to expect. The reason I bought it was to attract deer to my land since the guy near me put up qdm posters all over his property and I didn't hardly see any deer last year.Don't know if he took his share and some of his buddies over there and thought they know what the buck to doe ratio is to be in are area.So I was wondering what everyone elses experience was with feeders and if it might keep some deer near my property?

Under investgation: The EPA...and MORE missing emails claimed by them

Maybe now Americans will finally see the patterns here?

Providing of course they are told by the MSM.

Most law enforcement folks will tell you there is no such thing as coincidence. Why have oversight if there are no teeth to the overseers and they can be hoodwinked and delayed for months and even years?

Whenever there are possible incriminating communications among various Obama administrative agency's, after months of delay they then claim they've unfortunately been "lost".

At the very least archive laws have been broken, who takes the fall, if any, is the question. Even then Holder will probably not prosecute...

"WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Service isn’t the only government agency dealing with missing emails or faulty hard drives.

Environmental Protection Agency administrator Gina McCarthy on Wednesday cited a similar cyber snafu during a House Oversight Committee hearing.

“Another missing hard drive?” Rep. Mark Meadows, R-NC, asked McCarthy.

She responded, “We are having trouble acquiring the data.”

Wednesday’s hearing was called in response to allegations of rampant employee misconduct as well as a pattern of obstruction of oversight efforts by the committee.

The EPA is being accused of slow-walking several requests by the House committee to provide lawmakers with documents involving alleged employee misconduct on a number of thorny issues, including conflicts among the EPA, the Office of Inspector General and agency management as well as the EPA’s action related to the veto of the controversial Pebble Mine project in Alaska.

Separately, the EPA is under pressure to discuss and provide documentation on John Beale – the former EPA official who fooled his bosses into believing he worked for the CIA. Beale was accused of being deeply involved in crafting costly environmental standards that still are having an impact today -- though he came into the job with little, if any, environmental experience."

Downrigger Ball Trolling Depth Chart

Attached is a chart you can use to help determine the depth of your downrigger ball when trolling.

The depth of the ball is determined by the angle of the cable and line-out...this chart helps you to indirectly measure the angle.

The chart assumes the DR boom is 3 feet above the surface of the water. If yours is different or if you want numbers for different amounts of line-out let me know and I will add to the chart for ya.

Please note that I rounded the numbers to avoid decimals and small fractions.

The first column represents the difference (in feet) between the point where the cable would enter the water if the boat was not moving (cable straight down) and the point where the cable enters the water when trolling.

Multi-day canoe trips recommendations?

Hey all,

This is my very first post.

I'd like to do a 3-4 day canoe/camping/fly-fishing trip in early August with a couple of buddies. We all have canoe experience, but it's been a handful of years since any of us has been on a multiday trip.

We'd like to stay within a 4-6 hour drive or so of Detroit, and we'd like to get some "wilderness" feel. We are all backcountry backpackers and mountaineers, so the more remote the better.

Also, I'd like to get some fly-fishing in, even if it's just during afternoon breaks and post dinner.

Last criteria would be good, semi-forested, camp sites without too many restrictions on where we can camp.

So a few questions for you all:

1) What's the best location for us? I was thinking AuSable. But, I'll take any recommendations at all.

2) Any general tips on canoe camping? Anything that we might forget about that we should keep in mind.

Thanks in advance for tips! Cheers!

Genny repair

I am using my giant Honda because my champ isn't working well right now. It runs at full strength for few minutes then grunts really hard and lights dim for a minute, then shuts off. It can't possibly be water in fuel as I always run premium and mix water eaters in my fuel. Been running this gent for 3 years. Last duck season I ran it 12 hours a day for almost 40 days. Plus lots bowfish hours. I'm thinking its just giving up. Can these be repaired or should I just look at a new one. I've got my $300 buck out of it

Gun records exempt from FOIA

Snyder signs laws protecting gun owners' privacy

8:02 p.m. EDT June 24, 2014

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has signed laws exempting gun records from the state's Freedom of Information Act.

The legislation signed Tuesday codifies a 1999 Michigan Supreme Court decision that found disclosure of gun registry records to be an invasion of privacy. The information will still be available to law enforcement officials for certain purposes, though there are new restrictions on when police can access the records.

A log of who accessed the records and the reason for doing so also is now required by the new laws.

Michigan lawmakers introduced the legislation backed by the National Rifle Association after a New York newspaper published the names and addresses of gun owners in two counties in 2012.

First float

This is a bit late but I did a 4 hour float on the Grand on father's day. We launched upstream from the Portland game area and took out at Charlotte hwy. The trip was not short on mishaps for me, breaking two rods and losing a small handful of lures on snags while my buddy caught smallies. The last two hours were spent fishing with half a rod I trimmed to fishable length and even managed to land 3 15-17" smallies in the same 50 yard stretch of river.

Looking for a Spinner

Was in Canada last week and the guy I was fishing with was using a #2 spinner blade with a hammered pearl finish with a black dot on it. He doesn't remember where he bought them but he's pretty sure he bought them at an outdoor show. Maybe the Ultimate Fishing Show. He did well on them till he lost all he had on snags. Any idea who sells them? Thanks.

Wall tent for deer camp

I was thinking about buying a davis 14x16 wall tent for deer camp instead of renting a cabin in the U.P. Was wondering how guys who use wall tents like it or should I look into a used travel trailer. Space is my main concern, how much space does a wall tent and a frame take up in the pick-up all packed away. I know there are other things I need wood stove, cots, table, coolers, ect. I would just love to make our deer camp out of a wall tent on state land. It would be for just 2 hunters me and my dad. We have been going to the U.P. for gun season on and off for about 15 years and it just would feel more like a deer camp in a wall tent then renting a cabin. I have done a lot of research on the internet on different wall tents and if I go that route the davis 14x16 seems to be the best size for us. Also do you guys use the rain fly on the canvass tent on not.

Which of the two would you buy?

Lost a ball

Second time out with the BJ downriggers and lost a ball

I brought up one side to change out lures and unintentionally put a small kink in the wire . I straightening it out the best I could and lowered the ball to its' preset depth of 12" into the water. When the switch was engaged to lower it, the boom jumped, and I said goodbye to my ball:yikes:.

Is it normal for the boom to stutter/jump sometimes when the ball is lowered or is there a preventative measure that should be taken to avoid this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Lake trout fin clips?

Been catching a high percentage of lake trout this year with no fin clips. 5 of 6 from this morning weren't clipped. Should I asume these are "naturally" produced or don't they clip all the hatchery lakers. Seems the ones that aren't clipped are on the smaller side although we did get a couple larger ones the other day without clips.

DNR reviewing mineral exchange application in Mackinac and Chippewa counties

DNR reviewing mineral exchange application in Mackinac and Chippewa counties

Contact: Kerry Wieber, 517-643-1256 or Ed Golder, 517-284-5815

Agency: Natural ResourcesJune 20, 2014

A land transaction application proposing the exchange of more than 1,700 acres of mineral rights in Chippewa and Mackinac counties has been received by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

The proposal, submitted by Graymont, Inc., requests the exchange of Graymont-owned mineral rights near the town of Rexton in northern Mackinac County for state-managed minerals in the Hiawatha National Forest near Trout Lake in Chippewa County.

The proposal would combine state-managed surface ownership and mineral ownership on the acreage in Mackinac County, while Graymont would attain mineral rights on acreage under U.S. Forest Service surface ownership.

Graymont's mineral exchange application is separate from the company's previously submitted land transaction proposal to acquire approximately 11,000 acres in the eastern Upper Peninsula, which is currently under review by the DNR. Each individual application will undergo its own separate review by Department staff; the two applications have no bearing on each other.

"In the coming weeks, the DNR will process the application and it will be reviewed following the standard DNR land exchange policy and procedure," said Kerry Wieber, forest land administrator with the DNR's Forest Resources Division. "The procedure entails the review of the proposal by staff at multiple levels in each of the resource-managing divisions within the DNR, including Forest Resources, Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks and Recreation. A review of the application will also be conducted by the DNR's Minerals Management section.

"Feedback from the public is a critical component of the review process and will be taken into consideration before any decisions are made," Wieber added.

As a result of this review, staff will make a recommendation to DNR Director Keith Creagh, who has the authority to make a final decision on the exchange proposal. Creagh will make his decision at a future Natural Resources Commission meeting once the review process has been completed.

Approval of the exchange would not necessarily mean approval of future mining activity in the national forest. Any mining proposal from Graymont would require involvement from the surface owner, which is the U.S. Forest Service.

The public will have an opportunity to make comments at an upcoming Natural Resources Commission meeting. Additionally, the DNR has established an email address in order to allow ample opportunity for the public to comment. Interested parties may provide comments to DNR-GraymontProposalComments@michigan.gov. Comments will be accepted until a final decision is made.

Going to the Queen's side

Fish the Amherstburg channel today and the border patrol stop me did not board just ask me if I called in! Didn't even ask for the number but didn't leave until they checked. So guy's make sure you call and they had a US border patrol agent on board with them talking about double jeopardy.

Critter in lake

There is a underwater trench leading from under the tree at the edge of the lake out about 3 feet. I have seen the critter swim out like a flash but today I finally got a good look at it. It was underwater, about a foot or so, black, and I think it had webbed feet. It was fast, swam out toward the deeper water, and I didn't see it after that. It just seems to vanish.

Kershaw no hitter

Hard to argue Clayton Kershaw isn't the best pitcher in MLB.

I like the stat that Koufax, Gibson and Kershaw are the only reigning CY Young award winners to thow a no hitter. Pretty good company.

One other tidbit. Vin Scully called the 19th no hitter of his career last night. It would have been his 20th, but he was out sick last month when Josh Beckett threw a no no. He has called 7% of all no hitters thrown in the history of MLB. :yikes:

Saw Chuck Todd on NBC rip Obama for his bad ratings in a recent poll and declare his presidency over and also saw Megyn Kelly on Fox call out Dick Cheney in an interview for his roll in Iraq. She went as far as to blame him for the issues of today in that country.

Running In-Line Planers / Dipsy Divers

Need some rigging help to keep me out of a huge mess. What are your recomendations for running in-lines and dipsies together without tangling them together? Is it simply a matter of running your boards "way" out wide to allow room for your divers? Do you dial the diver in to 1.5?

Advice apprecitate!!

Rivers progress

Well the new girl is 15 weeks old now and weighing in at 40 lbs . Been just working on the basic and she comes and socialize with the other dog at club training. She is already make some great retrieve stretching out to almost 40 yards she is a strong marker already. Can't wait till she for her to mature a little more so she has more focus . She is just pup so getting three to four good retrieve out of her before she just want to play . The big boy dozer had a little set back in training this and is due to handler error. Was getting him ready for his finish title and we developed a major head swing issue .before the marks would hit the ground he would be looking for the next mark .so we step back and went back to just. Long hard single mark .to try and correct this issue before we start donating at hunt test. What is funny about the whole thing is on land no head swing but when go to water he looks like a bobble head . - -

Removing broken off bolt in a tight spot. Pictures inside.

Well guys, I really put my foot into it this time.

I've helped a friend with her power steering lines over the last few months. They have been nothing but trouble between the wrong parts or faulty parts showing their face a few weeks later...

Disaster struck again when she said it was leaking ever so slightly...

So I checked it out and found that it was leaking where from the flat piece that joins both pressure and return hose together and then from there bolts onto the steering rack near her drivers side front tire.

Long story short, I found that the one bolt that holds it together was stripped, so we went and got a replacement. I was torquing it down and of course, it broke off. It is broken off about a centimeter in and nothing is exposed.

Vehicle is a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer

I've gotten busted off bolts/studs before, but never in such a tight or confined area. All ideas or tips is appreciated.

I can probably fit a dremel into the space, but not a drill.

Below is a picture if what I'm working with. First picture shows where the bolt is broken off at, second shows basically what I see when I'm in there and the third shows you a grand scheme of where things are at.

Coon market lower

Trying to get a handle on the new coon $$$$ levels. Since the last several auctions at NAFA and FHA, both houses are selling PT. Spoke with Mark Downey, CEO at FHA today. They recently unloaded most of the better coon that were left, sizes 3X-2X, at $10. Said with China out, that was the market. And for the foreseeable future, the coon market pretty much toast. The bottom goods sit there. 600,000 coon at NAFA, unsold, for "sale" in Sept.. GOOD LUCK. Roger

Diseased bass on LSC??

NY dem want Illegal Aliens to vote

Quote:

New York Dem: Illegals Should Have The Right To Vote

New York state Sen. Guestavo Rivera wants to pass legislation to give illegal immigrants the right to vote in local and state elections, Reuters reports.

The main objective of the New York Is Home Act, according to Rivera, is to integrate illegal immigrants, who are estranged from participation in civic, economic and political life. The legislation not only gives illegal immigrants the right to vote, but establishes a kind of second-tiered citizenship on a state level, in which illegal immigrants can apply for tuition assistance, health - insurance and driver’s and professional licenses, among other benefits.

Found some fish again!

The N winds the past few weeks have really been screwing up my normal spots on the bay. Tried experimenting with new spots and didn't get anywhere.

Water finally cleared up and the waves died down so I got back out to areas I knew tonight. We shot from 9:30-11:30 and shot somewhere around 40 fish.

We were finding an unusual amount of buffs for our area tonight. Shot 2 and saw several others that we passed up before we realized what they were. Anybody else seeing more buffs in their area than normal?

Life After Dexter!

As mentioned before, my son gave me a subscription to NetFlix for Christmas. I have watched a few movies and documentaries but old Smokey and the Bandit movies do not turn me on very much.

I then watched the mini series "House of Cards", both the original (British) version and the American version (season #3 forthcoming). I have to admit, I was a "binge viewer" for both, getting all episodes in in about 2 weeks!

About 3 months ago, I checked out "Dexter." After about 10 minutes, I was ready to move on. Then, I got more interested and after the first episode, I was hooked. Initially, I would only watch them if there was not a baseball or hockey game. Eventually, I was watching either before or after a baseball game. I think there were over 90 episodes total. Last night, I watched the final episode of the Dexter mini-series. I won't spoil it for anybody but I was both happy and disappointed in the final episode.

Now, it's on to something else. Any recommendations? I started watching that woman's prison thing and stopped. It was boring as hell.

arthritis in the knee

I had acl surgery in 2008. I have mild arthritis in my knee. My knee has been great. But recently i have been getting a popping just under my knee cap. I went in to my orthopedic surgeon for an assessment. He is suggesting i get Orthovisc injections. It's a series of three injections, one a week for three weeks. Its a type of synthetic lube to possibly stop the friction in my knee.

Any members ever have these Orthovisc injections? Did they work?

My other alternative is getting the knee scoped/cleaned via surgery. I'm leaning towards the surgery myself because the injections would need repeating about every 6 months.

gahhh! lost all my contacts!

had to return the company IPhone earlier this week, and bought my own plan and new IPhone before sending it back. The Verizon people told me "all of your contacts, etc. will transfer over to the new phone from the Cloud (which I had an account in already). Did everything in their Howell office, then drove over to FedEx and shipped old phone back to hostile former employer.

Realized later the next day that something wasn't quite right in cell phone land...most of my personal contacts were not there, nor are my photos! Called Apple, no help without the old phone (oh, and did I mention that the Verizon gal thought it would be a good idea to return the old phone to "factory settings" before shipping it back to old employer?).

Anyway, what a way to start out my retirement! 700 personal contacts down the tubes, and they have no way to contact me unless they look up my land line.

If you want my new cell ph #, please PM me and I'll get it to you.....

Thanks

The 22 in bags only got me down to 2 mph and when I called frank he put a larger set in the mail....trusting I would send him the old bags back and pay the difference. ....what great customer service. ...what does it take to get your boat down to worm speeds?

Rainy day = Trap Building = Question

Finally got moved into the new house and putting the workshop to use on a rainy day. I'm building traps. For the main body I'm using 1/2" wire cloth making 24" long, 6 1/2" diameter tubes.

For the cone I'm using 1/4" wire cloth. On one trap the cone was 2 1/2" deep to the 2" opening entering the trap, and the other is 3" deep to the 2" opening.

My question: is there an optimum cone depth, or am I over thinking?

Thanks!

Garage sale gem?

Found this rod & reel combo at a garage sale. I've been looking on and off for a line counter reel and this was in the corner of the garage. Daiwa SG47LC Sealine with auto clutch and direct drive line counter; Mounted on a St. Croix GT86M2 Pro Glass 8'6" Moderate action.

I paid $30, guy was selling his dad's fishing gear after he passed away [50 years old and sudden cardiac arrest :( ], but someone got there first and got the tackle box and most of the rods.

I can't wait to put it to use and maybe pair it up with a matching combo if it works the way I have it planned out in my head.
