Guided Hunts

Let me apologize first for bringing this thread up again...I have seen outfitters listed on the forum before, but after over an hour of searching thru the threads...I can't come up with ANYTHING. Could you guys fire off a few guide services that you would recommend? Thanks for all your help!

Nocturnal bears

Anyone else having this problem? Hunting bergland unit and first two days haven't seen a bear but baits are getting hit. Possibility they may hit during the day? Three days of hunting left.

[IMG] started at 1&2 and nothing so moved out to the Ohio line and picked away for 57 with a lot of sorting . Ran into a few members litg8r (awesome rig) and to my surprise "Gone fishing" in Erie. Says a lot how stclair is not going well. Our minnows were very small with some extra big ones that we chopped up seemed to help.

Agree with those who believe that this investigation was handled very poorly. Josh Cline, and the other aide whose name I can't recall, should have been given the chance to testify under oath. Sure leaves the smell of a cover-up behind.

Fall vs Spring Steelhead on the Huron

I am not understanding why fishable numbers of steelhead (few and limited locations) end up over the ladder in the springtime, yet no information is found anywhere of them passing the ladder in the fall. The Grand gets fall steelhead all the way to Lansing, so what gives on the Huron? Has anyone ever targeted fall run fish above Flat Rock? I remember reading net statistics from when the ladder was first installed. I do recall fish DID pass then. Perhaps not having boat access in this stretch...

Poison ivy?

Just moved and unfortunately at my new place I am loaded up with it. Also tons of Virginia creeper and brambles so it's all challenging my identification with every step. Young creeper looks very similar it seems.

I had never had a reaction in 36 years of lots of exposure. Got it decent last summer and now on high alert. Loaded the bath with technu and jewel weed salve just in case me or one of my kids gets it.

Salmon Fishing Tips

A lot of people have been asking me for some tips for salmon fishing this fall so I figured I'd outline some thoughts publicly so everyone has a better understanding of how to go after the "big catch" this year!

-Its ok to litter in the river. In fact, if you leave your old plastic containers of spawn in the river all you're doing is attracting more fish to you. They'll follow the scent trail and if you decide to litter before you leave all you're doing is helping the other fisherman out...

Bands

Our weekend was super slow only taking 4 birds over the course of 4 hunts. Though it was slow, the success was getting out in the fields, relaxing, and busting a couple banded birds. Being new to waterfowling myself I found it refreshing to kickback and chat with the guys about the upcoming fall season. Birds were few and far between but we got a couple to come close enough for a shot. I look forward to the rest of the season to see what it may bring. Here are a few photos from our...

Is grouse hunting in UP genarally much better than LP?

I have hunted between Gladwin and Rose City most of the last 17 years. me and my buddy have found it pretty tough since we started going again the past two years. Our dogs are young, but well bred (Britt from spice rum and setter out of Elvis) and we've had pretty rainy weather the last two years on our trip.Anyway, we are probably going to try the UP this year. My questions are; Do you guys think the UP is much better hunting than the LP and Are the more western counties such as Marquette...

Grassy brassica questions

I got in a big hurry this year planting brassica plots. (new baby may have tangled up a bunch of summer "fun" at the farm) My brassica plots are experiencing a good deal of competition from grasses. Can brassicas be sprayed with a grass specific herbicide? How much competition can they take from grass? Is it best to just live with the status quo? Thanks in advance for your insight.

Betsie River Access

Hi All!

Does anyone have any tips on where to access the Betsie River? Also, is it a fairly wadeable river? I have never been there, but plan to head up next week and do some exploring. Just need a starting point.

Thanks!

Steelhead/king setup

Looking at getting a st Croix avid float rod. I can get a pretty good deal on a 11' Light. Line weight is 4-8lbs which would be more ideal for steelhead. Would that be too light for kings? I was thinking about putting some 10lb on the reel for my mainline which I know is little to much for the rod. Just looking for a little input. I was also thinking about just trying to get a med light since it's 6-10 line weight and I think that would be a little more versatile rod for steel and Kings....

Hitting grouse woods with dog for first time, looking for advice

I've been grouse hunting most of my life, but never with a dog. It's always been either out west where I know where coveys of blues are, or in Mich alongside a river on drumming routes. I got my pointing lab last fall, and he's started and ready to go, and we're hitting the grouse woods for the first time this weekend. I know it's going to be thick in there, but this is more of a learning thing and scouting trip for us, plus I'm just really stoked to get him out there.

Anyways, I'm...

15 Down Wins the Crown!! Team #15 Official Thread

Here we go team! Our home for the season!
Little background on myself, I hunt Bay County private land 99% of the time and an occasional trip to public land the othr 1%. Since the land I hunt is right out my back door I get in quite a few hunts throughout the season with fairly good results most years depending on what crops are still in the surrounding fields. This year is mostly beans so things are looking good for the deer staying in the woods more often!
Glad to be team Captain and can't...

River mouth.?

Hows the river looking? I'm thinking about taking the boat up Sunday and taking a guy that doesn't fish a lot. Any eye action yet? I'm still thinking it's a little early. My plan is to go out of mouth and jig that then by the island. Worst case go to the hot ponds and keep him busy with the cats... Lol

New to GR/Allendale Area, Need Tips

Afternoon everyone, I have recently moved up to the GR/Allendale area for school and looking for places to fish trout/salmon/steelhead. While I'm used to fishing the Big Manistee River, I am lost when it comes to the Grand and its tributaries. Are there many public access points in the Allendale area? I have done some research so far, but most of it has pointed me straight to the 6th Street Dam in GR, but I'm trying to stay away from areas known for heavy pressure. Also, any tips concerning...

Need some truck advice

Its time to trade in the 2002 impala, 195k, engines going fine but the body and other things are starting to show their age. So wife and I have decided that a truck is what we need, we borrow a truck a lot from my dad or my BIL if we need to get big stuff (lumber, drywall etc), but now that the car is close to being replaced its time for a truck.

We wandered around a car lot a few weeks ago, after closing time, because we didn't really want to be bothered with a salesman, and looked into a...

Retriever and upland trainer needed by a friend--unique situation

A friend of mine has a young lab, and he has not sent her away to any formal training, nor has taken the liberty himself to use any training programs at home. He's not interested in investing the time himself to do his own program, I already went over that with him, and says the domestic politics will unfortunately not allow sending the dog away for a long time. That being said, leaving the criticism out regarding him not wanting to send his dog away or do his own program at home, does...

Sturgeon report for 9/10 and 9/12 with a BIG BOY!

I got out for the 3rd time this year Thursday night and fished from 9 till 12 going 1 for 2 anD put what was not only my first fish of the season but my personal best sturgeon on deck! We set up at our first spot for about an hr without a bite of any sort. We decided to move a little deeper and only went a couple hundred yds to 50' of water. He hit A gob of crawler within 5 minutes of setting up and actually had me thinking he was around 20 or 30 lbs at first lol. He took the bait and...

To many woodcock!

Made it to the northern lower sunday. I did some scouting and moved a few, took the dogs out with a camera on monday and moved three single grouse. The dogs did well on them. Tuesday morning my buddy suggested a spot so I tried it. Could not believe all the woodcock. My dogs easily pointed 4 dozen of them. It actually got a little frustrating. I couldn't make any forward progress. The dogs would be on point right, left and behind me. The game plan was to work my way through a popple thicket...

Waterfowl Choke tube recommendations

Looking for advice/recommendations on waterfowl choke tubes. Does anyone have experience with Kicks or Carson's chokes? looking to add a decent choke to my gun for this season. I shoot a 12g, Remington 11-87 or 870 express. I've seen people make some great shots with the Carson's chokes but most research online points to Kicks. If anyone out there has had any luck with either of these any advice would be appreciated!

Oakland County Hunting

So I got a couple question for those that have hunted state land and parks in Oakland county. Do you have much success? I have heard that the first couple weeks of archery can be pretty good but once every Tom, Dick and Harry gets out the hunting get worse. > ?? I have scouted my little honey hole on some state land by my house and feel confident that I will at least fill a doe tag with it, and to me that's a great success on some state land that I've never hunted before. New Limits

Sounds like the final creel limits for MH4 will be 8 fish with a 13" size limit. The NRC will most likely approve this at their next meeting with the new regs starting Jan. 1st. This includes the Saginaw River up to AuGres and then up the Thumb to right around Lighthouse Park east of Grindstone.....

Why do we use Pyrodex?

Recently I purchased some Goex black powder for one of my rifles. So I figured I would also try it out in one of my other rifles. It had more energy and also seemed to clean up easier.Using the same rifle, bullet, sabot, and charge volume.I shot at a steel sheet that was probly just under an 1/8 inch thick. The Pyrodex load would put a very deep dent in it.The Goex load would blast right threw it.And it just washed right out of the rifles when I cleaned them.Yes it was dirtier than Pyrodex but the...

What changes or improvements are you making this year?

In your deer hunt, that is.

I want to stay a little warmer, and am looking at a core warming device like a kidney belt or similar.

I am also scouting earlier, starting now.

What are you doing to improve the effectiveness or enjoyment of your hunt this year?

- new blind
- new spot
- new friends invited to camp
- new camp tradition
- new weapon

Au Sable next week

Heading up next week for family vacay and I've got one day to fish. I'm familiar with Grayling to McMasters but I was thinking of trying below Mio. Specifically wondering about the stretch from McKinley down to the next pond. Is it fishable with waders? Is there much private land to worry about? Is it even worth fishing? I don't need anyones honey hole, more just curious about fishability. P.M.'s are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Stand Placement Help

Hey all, I just got permission for a 50 acre property in west michigan and would like your input. It is a tricky situation to figure out where to set up with deer movements and wind in mind, mixed with a golf course and housing to be concerned with. The field is all corn and there is nothing else to the West of what you can see. I enter from the east road and would most likely walk down the south treeline. The Western woods contains some nice swamp, perfect for holding deer, but not easy for...
