Salt River

Got out on the lake in front of the Salt River setup in 6' of water and moved 5 times, some holes we didn't even see dinks in, most we did, some borderline fish and a few keepers swimming by, but that's it. Did see our 1st Musky thru the ice, and our 2nd and 3rd too . They were mid 40's, about 40 and about 30, was something seeing them cruise thru. Also caught a real nice largie about 18-19 inches and fat as can be.

Just a heads up for people parking here. I had an 18v Bosch drill stolen out of the bed of my truck 2 weeks ago. I have a full tonneau cover and the gate was shut.

Luckily they left some other gear I wasn't using. Oh well, lesson learned. I believe people get what they deserve in the end. I hope this saves someone else from getting ripped off.

Looking for a standard, one-place trailer for a snowmobile

Checking Craigslist as well but I'd rather deal with a fellow member than a random stranger.

Looking for a standard one place snowmobile trailer. Doesn't have to be an enclosure. Not looking to drop a lot of money since I'm off work right now. It can be a regular trailer for all I care. Must have good wiring for lights and tilts. If it's a two place, that might work too but the width may be an issue.

If anyone has a deal, drop me a line. Thanks!

Mr Heater Buddy heater?

I'm having trouble keeping my Buddy Heater lit while moving it around in my shanty. This was a general complaint about 6 years ago when I bought it. If I bump the heater at all, it immediately go's out. It easily starts back up when I go thru the start up proceedure, but it's a pain in the -ss having to restart it frequently. Has anyone found a way to correct this problem. I have friends that have the same problem with their heaters. We've all just been living with the annoyance. We've all had this problem since the units were new. HELP!!!!!

New copper setups!!!

Hey fellas, starting the season with all new copper setups. After fishing a buddies boat, I decided on doing okuma cv-45 and cv-55 for the bigger capacities, paired with a heavy shimano talora with SS guides. I'm on the fence about my length segments. I want to know how many run 25' segments (150,175,200,225,250,275,300,325,350) Compared to doing pairs of 150,200,250,300. What do you think are the advantages/disadvantages of each one, and what you personally would prefer on your boat.

Sang 1-28

Fished from 11:00 till 4:00. Started straight out from the launch and worked my way towards the barracks. Threw everything in the tackle box at them today and could not come up with a pattern that they really wanted. Best action was on a red tear drop with a waxie hung on it. Sorted through a zillion dinks and ended up with 8 keepers. 3 Sunnies, 3 Perch and 2 Rock Bass.

Recreation doubles ??

Just got my Rec. double endorsment. I have a question regarding the last trailers saftey chains. It says they must be hooked to the far outside on the fifth wheel with a locking device. My question is the locking devise. Does that just mean like a spring clip on the hook so it does not fall off or come unhooked? Or does it need to be more permanent like a clevis?

Fertilizing A New Food Plot! Help!

So I recently got a soil sample done on my food plot. They gave me the amount of lime requirements and fertilizer requirements, but I'm still a little lost. The lime I understand, but the amount and way to fertilize is my question.

It says that I need 1000 lbs per acre of 6-12-12. I understand what the 6-12-12 means, but do not understand the exact amount I need. I have an atv spreader and 275 gallon caged water tank.

My question is what do I do now.

is a fish worth the price

this happened years back and notice the date jan 17th it is the 27th NOW OF 2015 and the ice we have now is not as good as it was then there was 12-15 inches over the bay Yet THIS HAPPENED! The ice was fine they crossed many crack going out to where they were going fishing! When they came in at night and followed their GPS numbers back to shore this happened! what you see in the light can drastically change in a few hours in the darkness! I saw an aerial view someone posted of all the open holes off of linwood TODAY Do you think you could spot them coming in at night if you didn't know they were there! would you still risk it and have something like this happen! don't say yeah yeah i know but that was in 2010 things are different! BUT ARE THEY??

Favorite Gill/Sunny Set Up?

Spinning off of the Favorite Gill Lure thread, what's your favorite rod, reel, and line set up for gills and sunnies on St. Clair?

-My jigging/hole hopping rod is a 32" HWI Acid rod (ML action I believe) from SDI with an in-line reel.

-Light bite/bucket fishing rod is a 24" UL St. Croix Premier with a small spinning reel.

I switched to 2lb Suffix Ice Magic from 4lb this season and aren't too happy with it. Definitely be going back to 4lb.

As a hole hopping light bite rod, I was thinking of picking up a Frabill Jiggler. They have a stiffer spring bobber at the end plus the line is fully enclosed in the body of the rod to prevent wind interference.

Trollin Fly Leader Retying

2015 will be my second year fishing on Lake Michigan on my own. Getting ready to re-tie some trolling flies/fly leader that were damaged in the 2014 season. I am using 50Lb. Fluoro and double snelling a 4/0 octupus hook with a size 1 treble hook.

I notice that most flys come with a 50 inch leader that I typically shorten with an overhand knot to the appropriate length based on the flasher I am using, fish mood etc. I am following the general leader length rule of 3X the length of the flasher---so for an 8 inch spin doctor my fly leader is around 24 inches---leaving 26 inches of excess line.

Do most of you trim off the excess leader material or do you leave the excess line on the leader so that you can swap that fly to a larger flashers if needed? Do most of you have separate flies you run on 8 inch flashers/typically shorter leader lengths and 11 inch flashers/typically longer leader lengths?

Thanks for the input.

Headed out soonish

camping/ sleeping in shanty/ limits

i'm sure this has been covered i could not find it in searches. i am wondering about the daily limit/ possession limit if i camp on the ice or sleep in my shanty.

i know the michigan fishing guide says you can have a daily limit plus 2 possession limits from previous days provided they are processed. (canned smoked dried or frozen.)

i could easily bring a knife and filet at the end of the day and let those freeze before the next day and some bags for the guts to go home too.

i am not trying to stir the pot or take multiple limits but i am seriously considering camping on the ice and sleeping in my shanty and wanted to know if i was asking for trouble coming back with more than a daily limit of fish. i definitely want to be on the right side of the law. if that means going home and coming back tomorrow so be it.

Lease for Duck andGoose hunting

I been hunting a farm for years that has a nice swamp area that hold ducks and the fields bring in geese. The problem is now others are getting permission to hunt which means at times its getting over hunted. I'd like to lease the farm just for waterfowl so I can control how often it is hunted and don't know how much to offer.

I have a couple questions and hopefully, you guys will have the answer.

1) If you lease a property does the owner still retain the right to hunt along with his friends if they are with him?

2) If the lease goes from Sept - Jan what is a fair price . I was thinking between $600 to $1,000 per season.

3) The farmer doesn't charge now for hunting but I'm concerned that by offering to do this I may get in a bidding war with others. I was thinking that maybe I should make the lease with a 5 year option.

Any comments

My First AR - Build Thread

Hi all,

I'm building my first AR. I'm hoping to use it for coyotes and fun plinking. I'm not shooting long distances with it. Nothing more than 300 yds is expected, and even that distance will be very rare. Most shooting will be 100-150yds or less.

I've shot them a few times and truly enjoyed it, as any owner does. I never dove into the details nor spent the time to learn the ropes of building one or researching parts. In the past month I've gone from building a complete rifle to building my own.

I want something easy to carry in the woods, versatile overall, and accurate.

Current plans:

  • Spike's Tactical Stripped Lower

  • Hogue Overmolded Pistol Grip

  • TAPCO Mil-Spec Buffer Tube

  • Magpul ACS-L Stock

  • CMMG LPK

  • Magpul Enhanced Trigger Guard

  • Geissele SSA-E Trigger

  • Rock River Arms Predator Pursuit 16" (heavy match) Full Upper with Free Float Half Length Quad Rail (full length top rail) - Chambered in .223 Wylde

  • Nikon P-223 3x32 Scope

My lower should be here some time next week.

I'm going to try to have some self control and order parts slowly and assemble as time allows.

Let me know what you think!

Fishing Between Gladstone and the Bridge

Hi all, super bowl weekend I'll be heading up to Gladstone because I've been roped into seeing a country concert in Harris. I've been trying to explain to the lady friend I'm traveling with that I just can't imagine going all the way to the UP and not ice fishing.:dizzy::dizzy:

I'm hoping you fine folks might be able to share some insight on a couple spots we could check out. I go fishing weekly here in mid-michigan, mostly for panfish, but I do have all the equipment for targeting eyes as well. Looking for a lake that can be accessed on foot where we could go after perch/gills and would be likely to get bit, as I wouldn't want her getting bored lol. Any help would be greatly appreciated. PMs welcome!

I wanted to start a new thread on single man shanties and share my perspective on the topic while soliciting the opinions of others in an attempt to grow my own knowledge and hopefully share some insight for those of you who may be interested in making the transition or are just interested in buying one.

My group has recently converted from the two man shanties to the single man shanties. Before the 2012-13 season we would either bring a two man shanty or pull our jet sleds. We decided to make the transition in order to add versatility and reduce setup/take down time. We figured, rather than take two man shanties out, pack it full of gear for two guys, and limit our fishing area to such close proximity to one another, we would diversify and opt for the single man shanty approach.

The single man shanty approach has proven to be extremely helpful in terms of hole hopping and cutting down on weight while manually pulling the rig on foot. This gives us the opportunity to hole hop with more ease and allows us to fish away from one another so we can cover more ground while we are scouting a new area or searching for fish. I know a lot of you don't use shanties at all while hole hopping (neither did we); but, the one man shanty is no more than a jet sled with a seat attached and built in shelter. These rigs are a little bit heavier than a mere jet sled, but i feel the added options are well worth the weight for the style of fishing we do.

On nice days the shanty never gets flipped over and we just use the seats as if they were buckets or chairs by pulling the sled right up to the hole(s) with all our gear in it. I found having everything I need right in the shanty sled makes for a well organized and simple way to fish.

We all bought single man shanties that do not require the extension of the main poles; however, some models do have an extension option that enlarges your "fishable area" by simply extending the bottom spreader pole. Models such as the Clam Scout EXP and the Eskimo Wide One.

As a stickler for making sure the things i use a lot are well fitted for me and my style i decided to bite the bullet and buy the 3 different models i was interested in so i could test them all out with the idea of selling the two i don't like as much and keeping the one i felt best suited me. I also wanted to share my opinion to others so they wouldn't have to. I purchased the Clam Scout EXP, the Frabill Commando thermal, and the Eskimo Wide 1 (non-inferno model). I ended up selling the Clam and decided to keep the Frabill and Eskimo. I know what your thinking... ...this guy is sick and just likes to spend money... (Well, i am definitely sick! After all i am an ice fisherman and a waterfowler.) ...but i knew i could get a good share of my money back by selling my old two man shanties and by giving a good deal to my friends/family on the shanties i didn't want.

I have posted a review of the Clam Scout EXP on the forum so others could benefit and plan on posting full reviews for the other two mentioned shelters in time. I decided to keep the Frabill and the Eskimo due to the difference in features and weight. They both seemed to have a place in my arsenal and since i no longer have a two man shanty i figured i would keep two in case i wanted to take my wife, a friend without a shanty/sled, or if i was introducing someone new to the sport.

Let me know how you guys use your single man shelters, which ones you prefer, and why. Im interested to see modifications, usage, accessories, and alternative theories of their use. Post pics if you can!

If you have any questions regarding the models i own or have owned i am more than happy to share. I did purchase the hyfax runners, tow bars, and covers for all of them.

Thanks for reading and sharing...

To the Bay from Kawkawlin River

Hi guys, I'm new to ice fishing the bay, I've got a quad with a tow behind shanty and am looking for tips on how to take it out on the bay safely. I know to beware cracks, go slow and follow other tracks if they are there, but how do you traverse the ice on a quad/snowmobile but at the same time beware thin ice? Do you stop every so often and check ice thickness?

Any info is appreciated, I'm planning to go out Sunday morning heading straight out from the Kawkawlin river.

Been to the Todd farm recently?

has anyone been to the Todd farm in the last week or so? how are things looking there? From the managers report it sounds like, as of this past weekend, a lot of the birds that came in before the last storm have stuck around. the last count was 11,000 or so geese. im just wondering if birds are still working decoys or if theyve all figured things out by now. ill be out there one of the days this weekend. just wondering how everyone else has been doing there.

Southeast Mi coyote hunting advice

Hi guys, im new to coyote hunting and have been reading through many threads for info. I have en electronic caller along with two mouth calls. I also have the mojo rabbit tail decoy. I Have a property that seems to hold coyotes. We have seen atleast one during the hunting season 3 different times. A week ago I seen two during daylight just traveling along a field. After the past 3 times it has snowed the next day the property is covered in coyote tracks. It appears from the tracks there is 2-3 coyotes traveling together. I have a few questions. Would this evening/night be a good night to try with the fresh snow? What are ideal weather conditions to look for? It is a good wind for several spots on the property. Should I start out with a rabbit in distress and then goto howls if that doesn't work? I'm assuming I should start with low volume incase they are already close by. What is a good amount of time to wait before moving to another spot (100-300 yards)?

Sorry for all the questions but im getting excited to try and kill one!

Thanks!

Perch spearing

The question has come up whether or not Muscamoot Bay is open to spearing perch. I've heard all kinds of answers but would prefer Law Enforcements opinion. Could one of the CO's clarify if this is legal or not. Thank you.

Perch spearing

Got out for a few hours

I got out last night for a couple hours. I moved 4 times before sitting on top of a mother load of activity. I caught Golden Shiner up to 12 inch, Crappies, Gills, Pumpkinseeds, Rock bass, Gobies, Largemouth and lots of perch. In the two or so I was out I had to catch close to 100 fish. It was fun. I wasn't keeping any fish didn't feel like cleaning anything.

I changed lures a bunch to have fun and try some new stuff out. The best lures for me where 4mm Anti-Freeze Tungsten Jig, Polish Perch Fry, Ken's Micro Willows, and Brown Purist took all the Bigger gills and Seeds.

I was in 5 FOW over top some laying down weeds that had some gravel mixed in on a clay bottom. I was able to sight fish with easy even with out the house flipped over. Avg fish was around 7 inch with a few above and below that.

Lk. St Clair Marina

Its been a couple days but just like to give a report. We fished the area to the left of the marina/launch area. Did quite well between my dad and I. About 100 fish with around 15 keepers. Not bad for a few hours. Visibility was good enough that I could take it away from the little guys and dance it in front of the keepers. Depth- 7ft with around 5-6 ft visibility. Bigger guys caught on wigglers and beaded spoon. Little guys ate all the waxies. Spare rod for comparison.

Appleton lake the 18th

Was out at Appleton for 5 hours on Sunday and did not do well at all. One group was there When we arrived, left and three others came and left. No flags with 4 tip ups set and just not marking fish. Drilled 30+ holes 3-28 ft.. Very lame. Landed a small pike and 10" perch, marked fish two other times without hits, it was BAD. We should have packed up and went to Bishop. Not saying avoid the lake, but if you go, be very very mobile, and if you find fish - stay on em!

Waders and kayak fishing: stocking or bootfoot?

I'm in the ballpark of purchasing some waders. I'm strictly looking for neoprene stockingfoot and bootfoot waders. I would go breathables, but all the decent ones I've found are too expensive for me, or don't seem too good of quality from reviews.

My only experience in the past have been canvas and neoprene bootfoot waders that I either borrowed for wade fishing or used for putting in docks. In all situations my feet began to hurt over time due to the rubber boot pushing down on my ankles and the top of my feet. This is why I'm kinda set on getting bootfoot waders. I would imagine them to feel more like large socks than anything (correct me if I'm wrong).

The reason I posted this on the kayak forum is because I'd like to be able to kayak and wade fish certain waters in colder weather. I know bootfoot is the way to go when you've got to walk a distance to a fishing hole, but I'll primarily be sitting in a kayak or wading a short distance. And I would imagine stockingfoot to feel more like a large sock with the flexibility and all.

I do plan on purchasing a pair of stockingfoot boots if I do end up with stockingfoot waders.

And yes i will be wearing a pfd and do realize some of ya'll think wearing waders is dangerous in a kayak...

What ya'll think, stockingfoot or bootfoot?

Help identifying spear

Hi guys, I had a question about a spear I inherited from my father-in-law and figured this would be a good place to ask. I always enjoyed his spearing stories from back in the day. It seems to me that he said a guy on Elk Lake made it. I can't find any markings on the spear to indicate who, when or where it was made? I was hoping that someone out there might be able to help me out. The only thing that I see on the spear that might be a clue is that it has a hexagon handle. Not sure if that is a clue or not, just the only thing I can see that might differentiate it from others. Thanks for any help.

Northwest report

Checked out linwood to augres. Standish looked like less of all evils so went out of whites. Ice on bay is busted and refroze all over. As average id say ice was 6-8 inches most places. I made it out around 3 miles where I shut it down. Crossed lots of little cracks and one decent crack that was heaved and running the bay. When I set up around 1230 the wind was shifting ice and it sounded like jet engines and thunder crashing down towards pinconning. Coming in I had one crack open up about 6 feet. Bay is kind of spooky looking in the dark with no snow on the clear ice. Others were out on sleds with no issue.

Fishing was slow. Only managed a couple. One was around 7lbs id guess. Hooked up with doug on here and had fun day boating. Nice meeting you and your dad.

Is Your Car 3D Printed??

After talking about the self-driving cars and the flying cars with some other guys and gals, it is only appropriate to mention manufacturing car with printers, 3D printers. There was a short interview on the local NPR (WDET - Detroit) station this morning with one of the head honchos of Local Motors. He mentioned a time frame of 44 hours to 3D print what had to be printed. They were hoping to do 100 cars this year. Their next step is to make the cars street legal.

Certainly something that we were not introduced to in any of the Jetson episodes we watched.

I am not sure how much of each vehicle is 3D printed on the spot. I have the feeling that the electrical wiring harness and other assemblies like the motors are manufactured in a more traditional way.

Hub care

Been looking at Hub Shelters. Wondering about the care for them when they get wet from weather conditions? Packing them away wet does not sound like a good idea. Would you have to set them up at home to dry them out? Or just bring the bag into the house? Was out with a bud once and he left his old style Minute Man out in the cold after it got wet with snow. We had a heck of a time getting it open because the melted water froze during the night. Just curious.

Stolen Decoys Cotton Road

I went to Cotton road this morning with all my gear including spearing stuff. On the slope that everyone uses to access, or near it my tackle box fell out of my shanty. Inside it contained a block of wood with line and snap swivel, and three decoys.(Red headed shad, Perch, and grey with black) Upon setting up my shanty I realized that I didn't have my tackle box so I had my brother stay with the shanty, and I went back to look for it. I found nothing but there was a dude unloading his vehicle at the launch. On my way back in this morning I found the tackle box sitting at the cement pillars of the launch. Inside was just the block of wood with the line and snap swivel. If you saw who took it and know them or you took it then I would really like them back. Prove to me and the rest of the world that not everyone is an a-hole. My number is (586) 321-9150 and my name is Doug.

Current question

I have not ice fished for 20 years. ..interested in going to Saginaw river and see many comments about currents. Other than melt off and rain, do other conditions (wind?) affect current as well? Current question

Must haves to take out on the ice with you (safety, entertainment, BATTERIES)???

Lets hear some of the items you guys take out with you? Everyone should carry a flashlight (or two) and ice picks. I hear about guys every year that the battery on their phones die. Between using your phone as a GPS, MP3 player, browsing MS, texting, fish selfies, everything else your phones battery gets eaten up while out there. I cannot recommend getting a portable battery pack. It could save your life.

I have something similar (older version). I do not get commission. But I will preach this product till I am blue in the face. Do not go to the store and buy an overpriced, underpowered item. This will charge your iPhones, Androids, and Tablets. And it has an emergency flashlight. You can charge a Galaxy S5 phone 8 full times with the capacity. They handle great in the cold weather.

So what other items do you recommend when going out?

OT winner!!!!

After STL scored "late" in the 3rd period to tie the game up 2-2, the Wings held the Blues off in overtime long enough to allow Datsie to score the game winner with a breath taking 2.2 ticks left on the clock and skate away with a 3-2 victory over the once arch rival Blues in the West. I really like this '2014-15 Detroit Red Wing team. They play hard and as a team in most games this season. Detroit's youthful Defense are holding their own so far right now. With this Victory Detroit remained only 3 points out of First Place in the toughest Division (the East's Atlantic Division) in the NHL.

No they aren't the Old Stevie Y teams of the 90's and early turn of the century, but they are tough as nails, answer the bell, never say quit, grinders. This is the kind of team that may go deep in the play offs. They just don't hear ya when its said they aren't supposed to be doing this or that (winning, defense, tough). I lik'em and tune in every night "knowing" I have a better than good chance of seeing the Wings play competitive, winning hockey. Especially at home. They turned this 6 game roadie into a 4-2 advantage. They respond well to Mike, whom I believe will be signed to a very lucrative, long term (career ender) contract after the season. Go WINGS!!!!

company logo's on everything

is anyone besides me sick and tired of being asked to wear advertising on every thing we own?

you can not buy a pair of insulated underwear without company logo's all over them. a hat? a jacket? camo pants? gloves, boots, everything has advertising on it.

about every other truck or car i see has some sort of merchandising sticker on it. ducks unlimited, browning, this company that company.

personaly for the last several years i have refused to buy any clothing item that has advertising logo's on them unless the company wants to pay me for being their bill board.

i would rather wear army surplus camo then pay for the privilage of advertising for a multi million dollar company:fish:

i know some things are a matter of a person showing somehting they believe in strongly , such as the ducks unlimited stickers. but good god its gotten absolutley crazy

10 Dumb Things You Do While Turkey Hunting

BY*STEVE HICKOFF*WRITES*TURKEY BLOG WITH STEVE HICKOFFJANUARY 13, 2015

Gobbler's lives are saved by mistakes like these . . .

You've all been there. Hunt enough and you'll be there again. And again. 10 dumb things you do while turkey hunting follow. Trust me, I'm an expert at it. You too?

STAND WHEN YOU SHOULD SIT

Patience kills turkeys, the old saying goes. Lack of it scares them off. Ever think the woods were dead just an hour after spring gobblers barked back responses to your yelping? That 60 minutes is nothing to an old turkey, but an eternity to you. Wait another five minutes. And maybe five minutes more. Listen for clucks, drumming and footsteps in the leaves. Don't have faith? Stand up. If you hear*putt-putt, and the sounds of wings clawing through branches, you'll learn to listen to yourself better next time.

SIT WHEN YOU SHOULD WALK

There are times you think too much in the woods. Or get lazy. Or let that early rising get the best of you. There, you, texting on your phone or playing a game. Are you turkey hunting or goofing off? Put that thing in your pocket. Now stand up, listen, make a crow call and cup your ears some more. Then start walking, looking way ahead as you do. There, in the distance, see it? A strutter. Now make your move. Get in good position and call. Did he answer? Now you can sit down.

WALK WHEN YOU SHOULD LEAVE

Sometimes turkeys truly are henned up, or too pressured to act right, or simply dead, tagged on their scaly long-spurred legs and gone from the place; not even there anymore, man. Walking and firing up locator calls in a burned-out area is about as foolish as standing when you should sit, or sitting when you should walk. Leave. Go do something else; especially if it means finding a new spot that isn't as cursed and quiet as the one you just left.

LEAVE WHEN YOU SHOULD STAY

I swear some guys have alarm clocks in their turkey vests that go off when the morning lull following fly-down settles in. They drive roads and eventually give up. Fine. All that means is a gobbler is likely with his hens. He doesn't have to talk; the girl turkeys are putting up with his strutting and drumming. He's a hopeful breed-minded bird, right where he wants to be. Take a nap. Call a little. Nap some more. Time it right and those hens may have drifted off to nest. And then you're right where you want to be: well-rested and watching that big boy strut up into range.

CALL WHEN YOU SHOULD SHUT UP

Yep, they call them calls for a reason. But sometimes you should shut up and let that turkey come to you. Put some doubt in his head. If he gobbled hard over and over, he knows where you are. Did he go quiet? He might be coming. Call now and he might pop right back into strut, hung up and waiting for you to walk his way. Don't. Don't do a thing until you click that safety off.

There's your dirt farm strutter, right where you should've been. (Steve Hickoff photo)

SHUT UP WHEN YOU SHOULD CALL

Some new hunters are flat-out afraid to call. Don't be. There are situations when fired-up male turkeys would come if you squealed on a mouth diaphragm like a fat pig in a chufa patch. The worse thing you can do while calling turkeys is to use the same number of*yawp-yawp-yawp*notes in an unrealistic and worn-out way. Think like the bird you're hunting. Call like a turkey, and put some emotion into it; this includes the soft stuff.

SHOOT WHEN YOU SHOULD WAIT

You've never been all that good at judging distance. Sometimes turkeys coming in at 60 yards look like they're inside 40 steps. Wait, and wait some more. I know, your heart is thrashing around like a flopping bluegill on a boat deck, but calm down just a little. Yeah, this is the exciting part you live for, but collect yourself just a little. And let that gobbler come to you. Cluck once, if your mouth isn't too dry. Head up? Kill him. It's okay if your hands tremble after. Mine always do.

WAIT WHEN THE TURKEY IS LEAVING

Turkey fever. Waiting for a bird to take one more step. Both scenarios let birds walk into another day if you let it. My buddy Jody likes to call them "second birds." They give you a second to make up your mind to kill them in that moment of truth. Miss it and lose your chance.

FISH WHEN YOU SHOULD TURKEY HUNT

Yep, it's real easy late in the season. It's warm. It's barbecue weather. They've stocked trout somewhere and everyone is catching them. The bass are moving onto their beds. The bream (as southern folks call 'em) couldn't be more willing to jump right into hot frying pan oil. Listen up: You can fish all summer. You can't turkey hunt then. Sure, it's easy to swap out a tough day of hunting for "the tug is the drug" stuff. Don't. Let's face it: fish are comparatively easy. They can wait. Unless there's a lull in the action and you want to eat well in turkey camp. Do it then: heck you might even hear a gobble nearby.

SLEEP IN WHEN IT RAINS WHEN YOU SHOULD GET WET

Turkeys seem to hate rain showers almost as much as spring gobbler hunters. They leave the dripping woods, often windy as well, and move to open fields, shaking off like wet black Labs. Areas you thought had no birds suddenly now have many. It's a shame you saw them out in the pasture as you drove to work a few hours after fly-down. Got a shotgun and shells in the truck? A change of camo clothes? It still might not be too late to pull something out of this. Heck, you're full of energy, right? Hatch a plan, slip in quitely and get close enough to call. This especially works if the gobbler is alone and primed to drift toward your calling at the woods edge. Heck, you've got at least one flat tire bald-faced lie in you, right? Your boss will understand . . . or not. It's turkey season!

Any dumb things we forgot to list?

Michigan Brittany females looking fo a top stud Dog

As a 35 year pointing breed judge and Brittany handler/owner with more than 100 placements on my dogs, I own one of the top pro trained and campaigned Brittany Gun dogs in Michigan and I am looking for my "Carbide Chip" dog to sire a couple of litters from some well bred Michigan bitches for pick stud puppies to continue my winnings ways including the ABC futurity. My well known 7.5 year old "Carbide Chip" dog has ran and qualified twice for the 2012, 2013 National Brittany Gundog Championships and has placed or won at all levels since he was 6 months old. One of the few competing Brittanys on Jimmy Johnson's trial string who has placed in both horseback and walking trials while also running in the foot handled 2013 Nationals Brittany Grouse championship where he ran the full hour out front and in bell range while having one clean grouse find but was denied a R/U championship by external factors not related to the Chip's performance. Chip does it all and is sired by a Dual Champion and his dam is out of a producing bitch who is sired by a Dual champion, with both out of nationally known Brittany bloodlines. Chip is in the prime of his life and needs a 3 point Brittany "major" to become a Field Champion and as of late seems to be a collector of 2nd place ribbons competing against the best Brittanys on the circuit. If you have a good Brittany bird finding bitch looking for a sire for her puppies, look no further than my dog, Carbide Chip. If you need the opinion of my dog's performance history and don't believe me, call Jimmy Johnson of Legacy Kennels. I can add value to your bitches puppies over to breeding to some local hunting dog sire and I have people waiting for a pup out of my "Chip". If you want to see Chip run, contact me because I'm one of only 2 mobility disabled people in Michigan who is allowed under special DNR permit to run dogs at Ionia and Highland while riding my Polaris Ranger ATV while having passengers. I got the top bred sire of your bitches next litter of pups and I'm conveniently located in Michigan but I can travel to any neighboring state due to my job travels. Chip is in my avatar picture winning 2nd place out of 18 dogs in the Open All-Age at TriValley in Ohio. Since one of your bitch's puppies is going to be trained by me to be a winner, this means any subsequent litter you breed has more value over any other dog you could breed. We will see what my Chip dog produces AND what your bitch produces under competitive bird dog scrutiny. - See More Here: http://ift.tt/1IAky7q

Filming hunts

Looking at investing in a "medium" quality hd camera for filming my hunts. Don't wanna spend more than 600 dollars but want something that is going to take good video to put on YouTube and also look decent on my tv screen. Any recommendations on brands or models?

New pup work

Here is a video of my wife and her border collies pulling a small dog sled. The dog on the right is Casey, I hope to use him this fall for grouse between agility training. This was Casey's first time in harness. The sled is a great way to keep the dogs in shape in the off season, and it's just plain cute. The dog on the left is Nicki and she is a multiple titled agility dog and a pretty good blood trailer. Most dogs have capabilities that we never dream of tapping.

Tipups: pike

Do you guys wait until the pike stops running or grab the line right away? I haven't fished for them a whole lot, but have been out 3-4 times this year and I have been waiting until the pike stops running. Success rate hasn't been that great; didn't know if it's due to letting them run or just bad luck. I think I'm 6 for 20 on flags so far. I know there's a lot of hammer handles in there, so maybe that is why. For my setup I use a size 6 treble, a sliding sinker and 20lbs braid. Thanks everyone.

Cleat Replacement / Crestliner Aluminum

Hi All,

Long story short, I replaced my 02 Fish Hawk, with a newer 2013 Fish Hawk.

It has standard 6 inch cleats in place, wondering if anyone has replaced their "Cleats"?

They do not need to be replaced, and there is nothing wrong or malfunctioning.

I was more interested in changing them out for "Retractable Cleats" as seen here.

http://ift.tt/153Mu4W

Any one used these types of cleats?

Thanks Aaron

Night Fishing

Hello all...

I'm heading up to Sanford / Wixom lakes Friday evening for a fishing weekend. Looking to maximize my ice-time and start throwing lines in as soon as I get there (around 7pm) and was wondering if anyone has any tips / experiences / advice on nighttime ice fishing. I've done it once and landed a mess of Crappies but that was many moons ago and on a different lake.

Thanks!

"DNR Line" English setter litter

Hi Folks,

I have a female setter from the "DNR line" if you want to call it that. I received her from my great uncle Tom Ellis before he passed away a few years ago. She was bred with a male from Justin McGrail's string at Black Creek Training Center at the end of December. Pups should be ready to go to avid upland hunter's homes around the end of April.

If folks are interested in hearing more about this litter, seeing the pedigrees, pictures of the dam, sire, and a number of other dogs further back in the line just shoot me an email at erice@ruffedgrousesociety.org.

I may post a classified as specified in the sticky above but don't hold your breath. If a post needs to be just a link to a classified to fall within the rules please delete and I will put one together.
