2015 will be my second year fishing on Lake Michigan on my own. Getting ready to re-tie some trolling flies/fly leader that were damaged in the 2014 season. I am using 50Lb. Fluoro and double snelling a 4/0 octupus hook with a size 1 treble hook.
I notice that most flys come with a 50 inch leader that I typically shorten with an overhand knot to the appropriate length based on the flasher I am using, fish mood etc. I am following the general leader length rule of 3X the length of the flasher---so for an 8 inch spin doctor my fly leader is around 24 inches---leaving 26 inches of excess line.
Do most of you trim off the excess leader material or do you leave the excess line on the leader so that you can swap that fly to a larger flashers if needed? Do most of you have separate flies you run on 8 inch flashers/typically shorter leader lengths and 11 inch flashers/typically longer leader lengths?
Thanks for the input.
