Current question

I have not ice fished for 20 years. ..interested in going to Saginaw river and see many comments about currents. Other than melt off and rain, do other conditions (wind?) affect current as well? Curious because as I read the posts, current in the river seems to vary considerably, but I have a hard time seeing how current would vary. .. thanks
