I might be heading to Montana pretty soon and I have room for at least one other guy and a dog. Bird numbers look pretty good this year. I was there in June and it looked like it could be the best year for birds in about 6+ years and local reports are all positive.
Right now the season is open for Sharptail Grouse, Hungarian Partridge, and Sage Grouse. Pheasant season doesn't open until the end of the second week in October. Not sure if I will stay that long but with another guy my schedule would be more open.
It should be a fairly inexpensive trip. The biggest expenses are typically gas and licenses. The reservation license is around $140 and there are plenty of birds to justify staying on the reservation which is huge. An additional State license is around $140 but isn't needed unless hunting off the reservation. I lived out there for four years and hunted nearly every day each hunting season I know the area and where the birds usually are. Also have some locals to hunt with and will probably meet up with another MS'er who is going to be camping nearby. Plan to hunt on and around the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in Northeast Montana.
The plan is to set-up a big tipi next to a small river and use that as a base camp. For the majority of food I'd have some local friends shoot a deer for me for camp meat and catch a few walleye if they are in the area this time of year. The town is only 15 miles away and has food, bars, and the periodic shower at a friends house.
It would be pretty nice if I could find someone to help with the gas and expenses. My schedule is pretty open so it doesn't matter if I stay a week or two weeks if I go. If things work out I would have to leave sometime in the next two weeks. I plan to bring one of my own dogs and transport a GSP from Michigan to a friend in Montana to give an idea of how much space is available. Plan to drive a 2002 Chevy Avalanche to give an idea of the space available. The tipi and some other gear is already in Montana.
Could be a pretty darn good fit for someone who has always wanted to go or someone pretty new to the hunting game who wants to learn some things and get experience. I won't try to bribe anyone by posting pictures of the area but quite a few Michigan Sportsman guys have hunted with me in Montana so there should be easy to find pictures. Let me know if it sounds appealing and we'll see if schedules match up.
