Conservation District Tree Sales

It is no secret here that the spring tree sale is the major fund raiser for our local conservation district. That is just one reason why I started buying my trees from private nurseries long ago. Just did a quick check of the 2017 prices from the Dickinson CD vs North Central Reforestation where I ordered my trees from again this year.

The local CD doesn't have Norway Spruce plugs this year so I used White Spruce as they are usually comparable.

Local CD - 4a Plugs (too small for my liking but that is all you can get) 1"X4" plug - $375/500 or .75 cents each

NCR trees - 4a Plugs $130/500 or .26 cents each - Almost 1/3 of the cost.

I can pay to have them extracted and bundled and shipped to my door for less money .... and I get fresh trees which leave the nursery only a few days before I get them - not trees which have been stored in a truck or barn for maybe weeks before you pick them up.

I really prefer the Styro 10 sized plugs over either the 2-0 seedlings or 4A plugs as they are much larger and come out of the ground faster. I can get the larger plugs from NCR for .54 cents each - still .21 cents cheaper than the local CD 4a size plugs.

It pays to compare. Also, as mentioned previously, if you want to purchase from a local CD and then drive to pick them up you can certainly order from a county other than your own as they don't care where the money comes from.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
