Inner bay

On a similar note, How far away from the mouth of the river or land do you have to be to start picking up fish trolling in the bay? Any certain depths I should look for? I have never trolled the bay in my boat but I wouldn't mind giving it a shot on a calm day.

I am not looking for hot spots, just a base line on what I am looking for and where I might start looking. Feel free to PM me any advice you might have about depths.
