I hope your wife's Lab recovers without any setbacks and that he's back to doing what he normally does by summer.

Our 9-year old Westie had cruciate surgery (filament rather than TPLO) back in Nov.'16 and she's back to stalking and chasing the squirrels and doing things she used to do as a pup. As BIGSP mentioned, we put her on a diet a month or so before surgery, getting her weight down to a more normal range, and we're keeping it down with diet and exercise to help her avoid going through it again.
