I was only involved with a couple beagles worked on tame rabbits.
Giving the rabbit time to wander about mattered , vs just tossing on in the yard.
I' ve played hide and seek by giving a pup the slip and it having to learn to track me.
Depending on the pup ,much of a first season can be " helping" the dog.
One ran the first rabbit backwards when she opened up.
One male over ran the first "check".
Some dogs track directly ,some down wind and while one gets puzzled , another runs on a rail.
Subtle to extreme differences you and the dog work out together.
Depending on ones perspective , there are more bad owners than bad dogs.
Keep it fun and rewarding. Buddies hunting together.
Pup needs to learn the terrains feel ,scents, new world of the field that is the out of doors.
Be a good hunting buddy and check his eyes ,ears ,feet now and then and after the hunt too.
Always do a flea/ tick check before going in the house!
