View attachment 246853 Martin82/Buckbaker: In cold water, I'll drag a jig along the bottom. 1/2 - 3/4 depending on current; with a Gulp minnow or similar (you'll see guys throwing swimbaits but I don't care for how heavy/big they are). I use a very slow retrieve with a periodic twitch (for walleyes, the mantra is, if you think you are going slow, slow down). When the water gets above 45 or so, I find body baits start working. Floating, double-jointed, large Rapala's weighted down (I use a three-way and pinch split-shot on the little tag dropper so the weights just pull off when snagged on the rocks). Also, depending on the depth of the channel you are fishing, medium to deep diving crankbaits (fire tiger, bloody-nose, and blue/orange are my go-to's) reeled slow. Probably 95% of the guys I see out there are reeling way too fast. I cast out, reel fast to get it down and then reel just enough to feel the bait kick. Also, I haven't found twitching or pausing helps much; pretty boring but I just use a steady retrieve. I do have a box of jigging spoons and they work in all water temps. If the current dies, I like the slow fluttery types (hard to beat a hammered two-toned Williams Wabler). When there is current, which is most of the time, I throw the P-Lines or similar. Pink is my first choice. And finally, you'll have nights where the down-deep stuff is not working (mostly in the middle of summer). Switch to an unweighted floater like a Bomber Long-A and fish the top 5' of the water column. Contrary to popular belief, walleyes do suspend and I've seen them slash bait on the surface. The attached was from this past July 4 at 11 pm. A buddy and I both limited out in an hour. I never step foot on a pier looking for walleyes in an east wind. But, in the summer, I always go immediately after an east wind; especially if followed by north-westerly winds. Follow the bait. Good luck guys...if you see a guy out there with a tri-colored mini aussie; come say hi!!
