My father and law and I went out on the Muskegon not too far above Newaygo. We were guided by Tyler who guides out of the Muskegon River Fly Shop in Newaygo.
The drakes were thick and steady.
The fish were fussy. Caught a few dinks (a rainbow and two browns). Missed a whale that sounded like a beaver slapping its tail when it tried to crush my fly.
Just as the light was almost gone and just as the spinner fall was almost at its peak when it would be near impossible for my fly to be singled out amongst thousands....
A big fish was steadily rising. It was dark enough that I had a bit of an advantage.
The fish crushed the fly and there was that sweet, sweet resistance.
My Sage One 5 weight bent double. My Hardy made Orvis CFO sang as the fish pulled a lot of line out.
Two near misses with the anchor line, a 40 yard run (which made the guide say 'Maybe it's a steelhead) and a lot of holding my breath as the 5x was strained and the fish came to net. A decent fish on a 5 weight with a pawl drag reel.
Great night. We'll fish with Tyler again. He did a great job.
