Home made camo

This might sound a bit odd but has anyone made any home made camo?

I have a lot of bamboo growing in my back yard and am trying to figure out something to do with it other than just cutting it back every year. I am new to the waterfowl scene but the strips of sage grass that is used as covering looks vey similar to the bamboo that I have. I am thinking about cutting a few stalks down and tying them together for home made camo. Any thoughts? Also any other ideas for home made camo others have used?

New Quest Torrent

Picked up a new Torrent yesterday. I really like it! The price was right, and it's pretty smooth. Best of all it's made right here in Michigan. Here's my last and best group of the night. I'm pretty happy with it for spending 15+ years away from archery. -

Lease price question

What kinda prices are people paying for hunting leases? Price per acre? It would be just ducks and geese, no deer. Like 200 acres of corn and oats. Just a ballpark of of what the going rate out there is.

Please see below the "tracking dog" requirements and if you could please interpret the rule as it pertains to tracking personal kills on private land. I am mostly asking if this rule is in place for tracking of any individuals deer as in "Tracker for hire" or am I required to have my dog certified to track my own deer?

Is this a new rule or has this been in place from inception and where/how does one go about getting certified?

Thank you for any help

2.1a Tracking by dogs; requirements. (1) A dog may be used to locate a wounded deer or elk if the dog is kept on a leash and, subject to section 43510, subsections (2) and (3), of part 435, hunting and fishing licensing, natural resources and environmental protection act, 1994 PA 451, as amended, MCL 324.43510, none of the persons in attendance possess a firearm, crossbow or bow and arrow, except as noted in 2.1a (2 ) and (3). If the tracking is done at night, artificial lights ordinarily carried in the hand, or on the person, may be used. A dog that barks while tracking shall not be used on public lands. The use of dogs to recover legally taken game does not authorize trespass. (2) A licensed deer or elk hunter accompanying a dog tracker shall not have a live round in the chamber, a cocked crossbow, or bow with nocked arrow, except at the time and point of kill. (3) A licensed bear hunter accompanying a dog tracker outside of legal hunting hours shall not have a loaded firearm, a cocked crossbow, or bow with nocked arrow except at the time and point of kill. (4) Only a licensed hunter may dispatch and tag the wounded deer, elk, or bear. (5) A dog tracker, when accompanying a licensed hunter, must comply with all the following: (a) Tracker must successfully complete a basic tracking test as administered by a department approved organization and shall furnish such proof upon the request of a peace officer. (b) Tracker has in his or her possession a license to carry a concealed pistol or is authorized to carry without obtaining a license to carry a concealed pistol under 1927 PA 372, MCL 28.421 to 28.435. (c) Tracker must receive annual written authorization from the department’s law enforcement division prior to participation in activities involving the tracking of wounded animals. (d) Tracker’s name, address, telephone number, and accompanying hunter’s license information must be provided to the department’s report all poaching telephone number prior to initiating each tracking activity. animals

I am a person who cares about animals. My main concerns are puppy mills, dogfighting and animal abuse. Most of the people I know are concerned about these issues, also.I do not want to take away your right to hunt.Hunting is needed as we have taken out most of the top predators in the food chain. I would much rather see a deer shot for it's meat than starve or more car/deer accidents.I do not want to take away your guns. I believe in the constitution.I grew up with guns and still have them today. My husband, brother and father were all hunters.I know a lot of hunters and they are good, decent people who care about the environment.Yet, I don't get the same respect. Because I care about animals I am labeled as a troublemaker. I DO NOT want to stop you from your hunting. 95% of the people who care about animals are good people. Your exposure has been with the extremists who I believe do more harm than good. I,too, am unhappy with the HSUS and PETA. tHEY ARE ANTI-HUNTING AND i CAN SEE WHY YOU DISLIKE THEM. Now try to see mine.I care about wolves. I do not understand the hatred for them. Bears and cougars and coyotes take livestock. They have killed a lot more people than the wolf. No one gets in an uproar about that. Mention wolves and things change. Why? We domesticated wolves and now we have our dogs that we love. There are non- lethal methods in dealing with livestock depredation. Can't we try that first? We are so cruel when it comes to wolves that it breaks my heart. God made them, too. We have learned to live with bears and other large predators, why not the wolf? Please remember that I am not trying to start a war of words. I just want to understand. Thank you.

Anyone working with food plots?

 -

 -

 -

I have been playing around with some food plots this year on my property and the land I hunt with my neighbor. Planted a small plot behind the house that I can see from the kitchen window for my viewing and then we added two larger plots on his property as well. The pics I took the other night while I was out sitting in what I call the observation platform. It is a tower stand he built that he uses for gun hunting but makes a great spot for watching deer as it is a sky scraper and over 20' to the platform. Our two plots are getting hit really well by the deer and for a couple of "no clue" guys and a little sweat equity this should be really nice as the crops around us come off later in the fall. We also had a huge section hayed(as you can see from the pic and this will become a fresh carpet of green grass by October 1. Next season I am planning to plant that section in corn and beans and just leave it for the deer.

My neighbor has 40 acres but the majority is the fallow field with woods on one side and a 50yrd wide strip of trees and a creek dividing it from crops on the other with lots of swamp all around. This extra food source should prove worthy as the season drags on and other food sources get scarce - I am certainly looking forward to seeing the results.

I was thinking about putting in a small 40x40 food plot on my property. I only have 4.5 acres with a house on it.

Where I have to put it, is currently wet, lots of cat tails and such. If I brought in dirt into this area and spread it, would this be a successful place to grow?

Class Schedule - Is this even legal??

My son just received his class schedule for Hillman High School yesterday. Him, along with many other students were given ALL electives. No required academic classes at all that are needed to graduate. Response from the school is that they ran out of room in the classes to fit all the kids and they will TRY to fit the kids in somewhere, but can't make any guarantees and can't address the problem until the first day of school. Given the fact that we were there the first hour class requests were due, and gave it directly to the principal, I'm a little pissed. By this schedule, this first semester this year is a pointless wash and ends up putting him a semester late graduating.

Can they even legally do that? I'd figure the district would be required by the State to fit kids into classes needed for graduation. Not make them graduate late because there is no room for algebra, English classes, etc.

Class Schedule - Is this even legal??

Burt Lake Maple Bay boating access site temporarily closed for repairs Sept. 9-11

Agency: Natural ResourcesAug. 26, 2014

The Department of Natural Resources today announced that the Burt Lake Maple Bay boating access site, in Cheboygan County, will temporarily close Sept. 9-11 for repairs.

As one of the largest inland lakes in the state and part of the Inland Water Route, improvements at this site will greatly enhance services to the boating public. The repairs at this site are supported through the Michigan State Waterways Fund, a restricted fund derived from boat registration fees and a portion of the Michigan marine fuel tax for the construction, operation and maintenance of recreational boating facilities.

Alternate boating access sites are available at nearby Burt Lake State Park and the Indian River Marina boat launch. The state forest campground will remain open during this time.

Michigan is one of the nation's leaders in registered watercrafts, approaching nearly 1 million registered vessels. Boaters enjoy more than 11,000 inland lakes, 36,000 miles of rivers and streams and 3,000 miles of freshwater shoreline – more than any other state in the nation.

For more information about this project, contact Kelly Kinser at 231-238-9392. For a statewide list of boating access sites, visit the Michigan Recreational Boating Information System at http://ift.tt/1wGkaC5.

A Recreation Passport is required for any motor vehicle entering a Michigan state park, boat launch, state forest campground or nonmotorized state trailhead parking lot. Residents can purchase the Passport for just $11 ($5 for motorcycles) at the time of Michigan license plate renewal through Secretary of State. Forgot to check "YES" during renewal? Residents and nonresidents can purchase a Recreation Passport window sticker during regular business hours at state parks. Learn more about how the Recreation Passport supports state parks and local outdoor recreation opportunities at http://ift.tt/R1TTaw.

Oscoda 8-26

Attempted to fish out of Oscoda yesterday evening. Pleasant evening with light winds and 1-2' waves. Only one other larger boat trailer in the parking lot. I headed out to 80' of water and started setting lines. I only had 2 or 3 set when that NE wind picked up big time. It had to be gusting 20 and waves became 4-5' whitecaps. Wife and children were not happy so I packed it in for a long ride back to the dock. One of these days, I will guess right or should I say the weather forecast will guess right. Not happy right now. The first part of my week vacation has not gone as planned from a fishing standpoint.

Huntingl Workshop w/Shawn Stahl in GR 8/29!

Hey Everyone,

I wasn't sure if you have seen this advertised or not, but this looks like a GREAT event that is being held this Friday in Grand Rapids! It will be featuring Shawn Stahl, a few staff members from the DNR, some great raffles from the Lake Effect Chapter of MDHA, a lunch, and the first 30 people receive a free Zink PH2 duck call. It is going to be a great interactive workshop on early goose hunting and the teal season. What a great warmup for the waterfowl season!

All of the details are on our Lake Effect Website as well!

Scope Height

Among other things, I tend to play with a plethora of gun related software programs (QuickLoad, Load From A Disc, Sierra Ballistics, etc.) and use my chronograph so I can plot the "best" sight-in distance for whatever caliber/bullet I happen to be using. I tend to look at a distance that will give me the furthest Point Blank Range (the bullet DOES NOT rise to 3" or more and, when it gets close to 3" low, that's the PBR). Most ballistic programs default to a scope height (middle of bore to middle of scope objective lens) of 1.5". Mine happens to be 1.6" and, when I change the default to reflect that, my PBR increased by 5 yards. Hmmm! I have a Bushnell Holo-Sight (red dot) on my 50 Alaskan and it measures 2.46" above the bore and, lo and behold, my sight-in distance increased by 8 yards (15 to 23) and the PBR increased from 155 yards to 165 yards. That happens to be with a 525 gr bullet with a muzzle velocity of 1650 fps and to get the same extra PBR, the velocity would have to approach 1800 fps.

Something else to think about in your spare time ... maybe those "ultra high" scope rings aren't a terrible idea. The concept seems to work well at handgun velocities but not so much as you approach those of a rifle.

Loud and Five Channels Dam Pond

I hit Loud Dam Pond today for the first time. Spent about 8 hours and only caught one tiny largemouth and two pike (one tiny, one decent). Caught the bass on a Powerworm, the pike on Jitterbugs. Does anyone have any tips for this place? I fished a good deal of the eastern half but didn't touch the west side. Clearly not a very productive day, but I'm confident these waters are full of nice fish. I'm just not hitting the right areas with the right baits.

Also, planning on trying out Five Channels Dam Pond soon. Any advice on this? Worth my time? If so, west end? East end?

Thanks for any information!

first day of teal season could be a soggy one.

So I'm just sitting here patiently awaiting teal season and I can't not worry that it might be storming all opening day long. The weather shows lightning and thunder and 80% chance of rain for like 5 days in a row. Now I know it's still a week away and the weather here in michigan changes more often than I change my underwear. So almost daily. Well it makes me think that I don't feel to good about cruising around in an aluminum boat while it's storming. I don't recall ever calling off a trip in the past due to lightning and thunder. But then again, I have never hunted teal the first week of September either. With this being said, I do have a few backup goose fields. Is anyone else using this tactic? Or am I just paranoid, and a little lightning has never hurt anybody? Haha

South Haven Salmon

How did everyone do in South Haven for salmon this weekend? I fished saturday and sunday afternoon from 12 tip dark and was 0-1 on a dips 120 FOW 55 down Blue Dolphin. Have been doing pretty good up until this weekend. Water temps were definitely the issue IMO.

Short Sunday Night Sturgeon Trip

Saturday's off the cuff trip with a friend got cancelled due to unexpected dinner guests. I told him I would make it up with a short Sunday evening trip.

We had been fishing about an hour when I set the hook into a nice fish. After my buddy stowed the rod he was holding I shoved the rod into his hands and told him to "have at it!"

About 3/4 through the fight a walleye fisherman drifts past and soon yells "hey, I think I snagged your fish!" I told him we were kinda tied up, if he could be patient, hopefully we could get his rig. About 5 minutes later we guide the fish into the net, remove the harness/bottom bouncer from the side fin and thank the guy for being patient.

We let the fish rest in the net then cleared the decks for pics and measurement. She was 63"! Largest hauled over the side of that little boat so far.

At 9:30 I get another nice strike and after a nice fight land a 40" fish that is tagged!! Second of the fish I've landed on the second trip of the season for me and both wore a tag!

Finished the night with a 22" walleye and 20" channel cat for the table.

Dragged butt at work today, but would do it again in a heart beat! (will try to post pics soon)

Short Sunday Night Sturgeon Trip

I needed a blind - and fast!

The weekend was closing and I wanted to build a gun blind for the one side of our family property that had no hunting "spots" yet. I had been collecting pallets from the feed store for a short while and had enough to whip something up.

5 pallets, a handful of deck screws, some leftover burlap, and some aluminum scrap from the trailer Grandpa lived in while building his house on the property and viola!

Not too shabby - I doubt it will last the winter, but it should be just fine for the gun opener.

For free - I'd say I'm mighty proud of my handiwork and frugal flair...

I'm sure November Sunrise would be proud! :)

Finally some success from "the wall"!

OPTIMISTIC version:

buddy and I pulled the midnight shift on the board walk by the municipal building the other night. We started fishing at around 1am, eagerly anticipating the glorious sound of bells jingling. We just had this feeling that we were going to really get into them. Oh man, we're we ever right! The first hour, we perched ourselves on the edges of our chairs, ready to sprint to meet the first victim of the impending onslaught. Hours 2- 4 , the fatigue had us relaxed a little more, kicked back in our chairs. You might have thought we were sleeping, but make no mistake, we were ready to flash into action, like a jaguar stalking it's prey through the tall grass. Hour 5 is when we were rewarded for our herculean efforts. I had just recast my lures, after checking that they were in fact still down there, when I felt the elusive beast start chewing on my perch color body bait. I sounded the alarm and my buddy was quick to respond. He netted the 19" wally just in time! After that excitement, we were both whipped and settled back into our lounging chairs for the remainder of the morning. We had to go a couple of hours later, but what a trip! It's nice to have a place, only an hours drive, where we can go and count on the fishing being HOT!

PESSIMISTIC version:

Two guys, 6 hours, only one stinking fish. The river is dead.

But other than that the web site has been under construction forever and every time I try to click a link for the chapters in my area it says not found. The web site has not has a recent post in quite some time.

I am curious what's going on because I would like join the local chapter if there still active. I believe it would be the Blue Water chapter. Because I hunt and reside in SE Mi..

Any contact info would be appreciated as well as your opinions of the chapter. I have gotten some not so positive reviews from past members. But did not want to form an opinion on this information.

Thanks

Good Deals On BH209 and Barnes TMZ/TEZ's

I don't really need any powder or TMZ's but if the price was right, I could get froggy real fast. I see the 5lb jug of BH209 at Jay's in Clare yesterday for $240-something I think it was.

Below has the potential to be a good score if some guys what to go in on some BH209. Midsouth has a sale right now and the 5lb jug is $189 + the $26 hazmat fee. The 10oz jug is $25.99 + the $26 hazmat fee. Both are in stock IAW the website. I had 2 of each jug in my cart (total 4) and the hazmat fee was still $26. If a few guys went in and ordered a few jugs or split the 5lb jugs, this maybe a pretty good deal if the hazmat fee stays $26.

http://ift.tt/1vdE5X8

Their 250 TMZ's in 24 count are $22.73. I think last time Encore found a deal they were in the $19 range for a 24 count.

If anyone can find good deals, may as well post them up.

Dog Food

Hey guys, wondering what you are feeding your bird dog. The Last 2 breeders I've bought dogs from (English Setters) fed them Purina Pro Plan Sport Dog...and I've continued that. However, I really don't think the dog likes it too much! What other foods are similar/comparable/quality foods? Thanks for your reply.

Lund Tyee - Pro-V - Fisherman - Pro Sport / mid-late 90s fuel fill question

Hello all,

Earlier this summer I left my gas cap off at a gas station, and lost it forever. I found a "good enough" replacement cap, which I had to modify, and it doesn't really fit properly.

The OEM cap I lost, was all metal (cast brass?) and chrome plated, with two raised "wings". I have looked in Lund catalogs from the mid-late 90s and it seems like this was a common cap used on multiple Lund models.

My boat is a 1997 1700 Pro Sport. I think this cap was used on some or all Tyee, Pro-V and Fisherman models, during the mid to late 1990s, for models in in-hull fuel tanks.

Questions:

1. Has anyone had to replace their gas cap on these boats? If yes, where did you find a replacement.

2. How is the fuel fill assembly attached to the hull and fill hose leading to the fuel tank? I emailed Kendore Marine, which seems to have an impressive array of NOS boat parts. They told me it is hard to find such parts, and the solution is often to replace the filler assembly.

Thanks for any comments.

Cleaning up a propane tank?

Last outdoor project before the Salmon run..Time to clean up the eyesore of a tank in the back yard.

 -

My dealer says he will pick up and powder coat paint our tank next spring when it's near empty and weather won't be too cold...it is full to capacity right now.

What's a good cleaner/method, for an arthritic old fuddy duddy to use?

Don't care to get into muscling around the power washers and sanders etc

Saving that energy for fishin'...

Sittin' in the lawn chair with a hose and bucket will do just fine.

I've got a couple long handled stiff brushes, halfway up it's covered with something like barnacles. I can probably get it done in 3-4 sections over a few days. It's a matte chalky finish so I'm guessing half a dozen cans of outdoor enamel from the $2 surplus store should adhere and hold up over the winter.

Hey all,

Looking for any recent up dates of deer sightings and population for those who have been to camp or driving around or word of mouth after the rough winter or recent DNR reports, will either be in central or southern Iron county to set up camp in November, haven't decided which yet.

All areas of interest to me, may be going for an early bow hunt somewhere... Any news on Menominee County?

New Hunter here

Hello everyone,

So my son and I are new to Hunting. Well I have been out with friends in the past but I never really did any of the leg work. I am in my mid 30's and my son is 9. We want to go deer hunting maybe this year or next year. I have already taken hunter safety; I also had my son take it 2 years ago. I am going to have him take it again this year after football is done for him. So my question is how can we start getting ready for everything? I want to try and talk to some farmers and see if we can hunt there land, but have no idea how to go about that. We live in Ann Arbor but right next door to Dexter.

If anyone can give us a little help with getting started, that would be great.

Thanks!

Hi to all members.

Found the site by accident when looking for a 17 foot float rod blank, this site came up and I had to join.

Float fished for 31 years now and build my own rods about the same number of years, used to tie flies, over 40 years, started that when I was a kid but my eyes are tired so gave that up, easier to buy them from guys I know.

Looking forward to meeting people on the site and sharing information, I always say its what you learn once you know everything that realy counts and thats why these forums are important.

HunterEdCourse.com offers new option for online hunter education in Michigan

Contact: Sgt. Tom Wanless (DNR), 517-284-6026 or Jim Moore (Hunter Ed Course), 248-982-4600

Agency: Natural ResourcesAug. 21, 2014

The Department of Natural Resources today announced that a third official Michigan online hunter education course is now available at <a href="http://ift.tt/1qIcneK 24805c0&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hunteredcourse.com%2Fst ate%2Fmichigan" target="_blank">http://ift.tt/1pYREGt.

A Michigan-based company, Hunter Ed Course offers its online hunter education course for $17.99. The course features lessons on safe, legal and responsible hunting practices and uses narration, closed captioning, interactive exercises and photos that replicate what a hunter will see in the field.

As with all of Michigan's online hunter safety course options, after taking the online course, students are required to attend the field/skills day portion of a traditional class and take the student examination in order to receive their hunter safety certificates.

"We're pleased to partner with Hunter Ed Course to offer Michigan residents another option for their hunter education classwork," said DNR hunter education program supervisor Sgt. Tom Wanless. "We encourage students considering an online course to get their field day scheduled soon so that they'll be ready to head out into the field in the fall."

Students will need to pre-register for the field/skills day before taking the online course. Upon passing the online course, they will be eligible to complete the field day with an instructor and take the written exam. Students can search for a class in their area and find more information about Michigan's hunter education program at http://ift.tt/1pYREGx.

Michigan hunter education is required for all hunters born after Jan. 1, 1960. A hunter safety certificate is required to purchase a Michigan hunting license.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural and cultural resources for current and future generations. For more information, go to www.michigan.gov/dnr.

This should be fun, but interested just the same.

Ok guys, I'm curious about a few things. First, I've always hunted ducks with my Benelli SBE with 3" #2 or #4 steel shot.

That said, I've heard a lot about people going to 3.5 inch #2 now that it is easily available. I've previously only used 3.5 inch shells for geese and shot BB at the time. How many of you have switched to 3.5 for duck, what size shot, and why? Wondering if it's worth making the jump. More pellets can't be a bad thing right? But I don't really know.

And, to have a little fun, how many are using a 10 gauge for duck? Myself, I've never done it, only used it for geese, but to my surprise, using a 10 gauge for duck isn't that uncommon anf some swear by it. So let's have it, do I try out the big boy this year or is the extra weight carrying it around not worth the effort?

This should be fun, but interested just the same.

Saginaw Bay 8-21-2014 Walleye

I had the extreme pleasure of fishing with Rocky D, Mike T, and Roger L. The bite was a bit slow but the day was beautiful and we hung in there for a 4 man limit. I fished with Mike and Roger several times before, but it was the first time I met and fished with Rocky aka (Deaf Buck). We ran 10 Offshore boards with tattle flags and 1 oz bouncers. We also ran two down rods with 2 and later 3 oz bouncers. I don't think there was a favorite color and we were taking fish high and low. - We also met and talked with Jay Be and his crew at the ramp.

Elk viewing

The wife and I are heading up to Mackinac Island this weekend and are staying at Indian River Friday night. If we get their early enough I would like to take an evening drive and hopefully find some elk. I was looking at the DNR elk brochure and I didn't know if at one viewing station I might have a better chance of spotting an elk over another, or are my chances pretty much the same at them all. Thanks.

Hinge Cut Screen

I want to screen the western part of our property from our neighbors. There are three parcels that border the west side (canopied hardwoods), and all are hunted. Multiple treestands/bait piles encroaching the property line, most facing our property. I don't want them shooting/trespassing on our property (I'm going to try and call them too). Hinge cutting seems to be the best option, as it's all hardwoods on the property line. If I hinge cut, how should I go about it? I would hate to make a travel corridor or bedding area on the property line. Should I just make a mess? Any deer the neighbors spook will likely retreat to our parcel and find our travel corridors, food plots, bedding areas (per Scott Bishop's plan).

Thanks

Mount or Not?

Fished Monday night in PH pulling wire. Got started at 8:50pm, and the first fish on was a smallmouth coming out of 48 fow. It's my first master angler. Fish was 21" long with a 16" girth, weighing 5 pounds 11 ounces.

I was fishing for walleye and hardly ever fish smallmouth. So is this a fish worth mounting? I'm applying for my master angler, but haven't decided whether to mount this or not.

What would my fellow anglers do?

BTW....limited on walleye by 11pm.

"Bud, Buddy, Pal, Honey, Sweety, Darlin'"

I'm not a stuff-shirt by any measure however, I find it inappropriate and unprofessional to have a retail clerk or waitstaff address me using the above names. I'm not your Bud, Buddy, Pal, Honey, Sweety and/or Darlin'.

When doing business with me you can simply say "Hello" or "Good Morning". If you must add something to it, the only appropriate word to use is "Sir"..."Good morning sir" or, "Thank you sir."

A local party store clerk, who I do not know from a bale of hay, greets everybody with "hey Bud" and concludes with "thanks bud". A lady at the local doughnut shop starts with "help ya honey" and ends with "bye sweetie".

It may seem like a small thing however, IMHO, it crosses the line as being unprofessional.

Contact: Eric Thompson, 906-786-2354, ext. 142 or Debbie Munson Badini, 906-226-1352

Agency: Natural ResourcesAug. 19, 2014

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will host an open house Thursday, Aug. 21, in Stephenson to provide information and receive public comment on proposed forest management treatments for 2016 in the Escanaba management unit, which includes Delta and Menominee counties. The open house is set for:

  • Thursday, Aug. 21, 3-6 p.m. (CDT)

DNR Stephenson Field Office, West 5420 River Road, Stephenson

Each year, DNR personnel evaluate one-tenth of the state forest. The inventory provides key decision-making information for foresters and wildlife, fisheries and other resource managers. The age, health, quality and quantity of trees and other vegetation are assessed to enable DNR staff to make informed decisions. Timber management, wildlife and fisheries habitat, minerals, archeological sites, recreational use, wildfire potential and social concerns are just some of the topics taken into consideration during this review.

Because the forest is inventoried approximately two years in advance, a "year of entry" is assigned to indicate when treatments will be prepared. Information currently under review has a 2016 year of entry. This means that treatment activities on lands being reviewed this year will actually begin in 2016.

Proposed treatments, which may include timber harvesting, replanting and other management activities, are designed to ensure the sustainability of all forest resources.

"Open houses are a good way for interested residents, neighbors and stakeholders to learn about the DNR's proposed treatment plans and to share input with foresters and biologists before any final decisions are made," said Bill O'Neill, chief of the DNR's Forest Resources Division.

"This year we're inviting folks who might not be able to get to a meeting to share their comments via email with unit managers," he added. "When it comes to the health and sustainability of our state forests, we want the planning process to be as inclusive as possible."

To more easily and efficiently oversee the forest resources, the DNR divides each management unit into smaller units or "compartments." This year, the compartments under review are in Bark River, Cornell, Maple Ridge and Brampton townships (Delta County); and Holmes, Gourley, Cedarville, Ingallston and Harris townships (Menominee County).

Maps and information regarding proposed treatments will be available at the open house. The information can also be found at http://ift.tt/1kS2D4C. Compartment review packets for the 2016 year of entry can be found by selecting the shown map and clicking on the "Escanaba" button. Records of decisions, recorded timber harvests and other treatments for past years are available on this page.

On Wednesday, Sept. 3, the DNR will complete its formal compartment review to decide on final treatment plans for these areas. That review will take place:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 3, 9:30 a.m. (EDT)

Escanaba State Office Building, 2nd floor conference room, 305 Ludington St., Escanaba

Persons with disabilities who need accommodations for either meeting should contact Eric Thompson, 906-786-2354 , ext. 142.

Anyone unable to attend either meeting may submit comments via email to Eric Thompson (thompsone3@michigan.gov) using the subject line "Esacanba state forest open house comment."
