A Good Start to 2015

My boss invited me out for a New Year's Day morning pheasant hunt on his grandmother's property. It was a 60 acre piece that has been in CRP for the past 5-6 years and generally held a few birds.

Things started off slow as we made two passes and didn't move anything. As we started down the edge of the field closest to the cut corn, Autumn went on point in a patch of cone flower and some thick nasty grasses. I worked my way in, with my boss and his brother flanked to my right and ready for a shot should a bird present itself. Nothing flushed when I walked in front of the dog, so as I turn around to release my dog, his brother points out the hen that flushed.

And another.

Their four sisters.

And then a lone rooster, bringing up the rear.

A right to left, 25 yard shot put the bird down. I was stoked (still am) as that was my first Michigan rooster.

I'll be mounting this bird as it's in great condition. It'll be nice to relive that sequence of events as I admire it.

Cheers to 2015!
