been huntin turkeys for the last 4 yrs. with no success they always busted me or would not come close enough. Well almost wanted to give up but decided to keep trying been reading on this site and getting tips and ideas from others that were successful.
I took the late season this year so i would have more time to hunt went on state land in grand traverse county my friend had never been and wanted to go too this was by his house and he wanted to learn how i told him i never got one yet but kinda knew how too, , decided to take day off on Tuesday because it was gonna rain on Monday which was late season opening day. well got out of work early Monday and went and set up popup blind on edge of grass and sandy field between some small pine trees. with tall oaks and hardwoods to my back lots of tracks and deer tracks too...we sat there Monday afternoon saw nothing and heard nothing. left blind there put decoys inside it for nite .. my friend had been seeing turkeys in this area for a past few weeks now.
tues day morning we got up early so we could get to blind before daylight got there as we were walking towards blind we could hear gobbling right by the blind so we very carefully and quietly sneak up to blind put decoys back out and sit and wait .. the whole time we hear gobbling from 2 birds right by us we were very excited... about 15 after six one flys down right next to blind about 10ft away to our right no way for a shot and starts gobbling like mad and walking barley had time to get gun up and here he comes around the front of the blind out about 20 yards and then heading at a slight angle away my buddy says shoot him now.... was just so caught off guard.... let him have it at 30 yards away with my 20 gauge bennile with 3 inch turkey loads #5 shot BOOM he went down right now and just flopped for a min or so.. then a deer runs out across the feild up to the turkey as it is moving a little tiny bit and the deer looking at it and walking circles around it and we could hear other turkeys behind us in the woods, finally the deer goes away and we could not hear the turkeys in the woods any more , was very exciting morning and was very happy i got my first turkey he weighed 20 pounds and had a 9 1/2 inch beard spurs were 3/4 inch..:D
