Muskegon river trout help

never caught a trout before any tips?
thinking about going over to fish the muskegon river
by the croton dam to try and catch a trout from
the banks with my boy any tips would be a great help.
i have
one 7 foot rod with 6# trilene xt
one 7 foot with 8# powerpro braid
and one 5 foot with 2# berkley vanish

bait or lures we have a few rapalas i read was a good lure
also have a trout magnet jig kit
also have slip bobber set ups for jigs or live bait
was going to get some flatfish as i read they are good also
have other tackle not listed but this will give you an idea of what we have to use.
anything on the list sound like it would work or any tips on lure or bait to try and catch a trout by the croton dam and bridge area by the boat launch .thank you for any help.
