Assume your dog staunchly points a grouse or woodcock. During the hunting season, if you do your part, your dog's good point could be rewarded with a downed bird and a retrieve. That makes me wonder how you can similarly reward a dog in such a situation during the off season.
Do any of you bring a dead along with you (obviously a non-native species like a chukar or non-native quail), to throw to reward a nicely pointed grouse or woodcock during the off season?
To take things one step further, how about taking a shotgun along with blanks to more realistically simulate a downed bird (e.g., toss dead, then shoot blank)?
Of course, if a DNR officer saw you, he might have questions, but wouldn't you have nothing to worry about with blanks and a dead chukar? Any other issues with this, or is this not a good idea?
