5/31 Q-river

Straight out 3 miles from 10-11:30. Pull 5 fish with the family. Wife doesn't like to get up early. Short trip took my autistic son for his first trip and he caught his first eye. 90 minutes was all he could handle but I think hes hooked.

Trout fly fishing early July?

Hello everyone, I'm new to fly fishing and I would really like to take my wife and son out fly fishin for trout durin the 4th of July weekend. My question is, what river, which part of it would be my best bet? Would like to find a spot were I can set up a base camp close to the shore (accessible with my jeep) that isn't a campground to get the "roughing it" expirience. Like I said, we will be targeting trout... Just looking for some info from you guys. Thanks!

Fha fur sale helsinki

Middle of the night over there. Won't be long and there's gonna be a whole lot more wild fur, and following, even more ranch foxes and mink. With the combined skins from ALC, Seattle, and Finnish Fur Sales, now SAGA, it will be interesting to see how many more skins the market can absorb. The big sale in Kopenhagen, in two weeks. 25% down, balance due in Sept.. Lots of fur to be sold in June.

Friday afternoon report

Went out for 2 hours today between 2 and 4 caught 1 24 inch walleye and a bass. Was trolling crawler harnesses I was told good colors were pink and gold. I caught mine on chartreuse near metro.

I'm using 1/2 oz. inline weights on spinning gear so I'm not sure exactly how far back. What speed do people normally troll at? I was trying to stay around 1 mph.

BC Shore fishing

Thought I'd post for all the shore bound guys like myself. The fishing has been great been picking up some nicer fish still and some average eaters.

Picked up three this afternoon after work in an hour. throwing twisters downstream and slowly working them back up has been the best for me bright days like today dark colors were working better than bright colors.

Good mid-range trolling reel?

Hello all,

What is the current go-to trolling reel with riggers and dipseys for Great Lakes salmon? I would like to upgrade a reel or two.

I'm thinking full metal body and level wind. I want something with a line counter and that will last a while. I'm familiar with star drags but would consider something else if it's better. Don't want to spend a fortune but willing to go with something better than entry level.

Thanks for any ideas.

Surprized at the pump.

For the first time in a while, (years) diesel was cheaper than regular gas.

Smallie Fishing for a week

Hey everyone!

I'm a new member to the site and need some help!

I'm taking next week off to fish the Saginaw Bay area for Smallies and Walleye. I'm driving up from Tennessee and want to make the most of this fishing trip. I'll be staying in Harrison and driving to fishing spots from there.

Will get Crawler Harness' for Walleyes

Can anyone point me in the right direction for Smallies or Walleye?

General location, depths, your favorite techniques, good launch sites:help:.

Thanks in advance!

Using Tadpoles with copper

I did some dive testing today and got some interesting results. I rigged an Off Shore Magnum Tadpole to run inline using 2 OR-16 releases. I let out 150' of Blood Run 45# copper and attached the Tadpole to the backer. I used a Fish Hawk TD to do the testing. I think the numbers are fairly accurate, but we will know for sure when they are tested by Mark from Precision Trolling data later this year. With the 150' copper, the Tadpole will stay set without locking the release in with a rubber band, you just have to make sure it is set when you put it in the water. If you use it with 300', you will have to lock the release on the arm in with a rubber band so it doesn't trip. After learning what I did today, though, I doubt the 300 coppers will be seeing much action!

Here's what I found:

150' copper at 2.0 MPH:

100' back (after all the copper is out)- 25' deep = 59' total

150' back - 35' deep = 69' total

2.5 MPH:

100' back - 20' deep = 47' total

150' back - 30' deep = 57 total

Testing was done with a Regular size Silver Streak. It was flat today, so I could really dial in the speed and the autopilot kept me straight, eliminating as many variables as I could. The same can be done with lead core, hopefully I will have some numbers for that soon as well. I think one of the main advantages of this is that you can really dial in the depth you want to fish. You aren't limited to only how much copper is on the reel anymore. The Tadpole dives deeper than similar devices of the same weight due the large planing surface.

Here a pic of the set up:

I'm going to be heading up to Algonac on the boardwalk in town this weekend and was wondering if anyone has been catching walleyes there lately. I haven't seen any reports and was just curious.

Global Warming - Solutions?

Let's not debate if it is real . Let's assume it is and caused by burning fossil fuels. What is the solution to the problem assuming it is a problem?

I do not think the alternatives are as easy as substituting refrigerants.

Lsc 5/28

Short trip out from the Spillway this morning. Headed for 8 FOW south of Metro Beach trolling into 12 FOW. No takers. Berkley Flicker Shad, DHJ12 and RR (800). Pulled lines in rode around the bay, south past the 400 club and out to 17 FOW. No fish marked, but have seen & heard of reports of some catching walleye out there. Trolled another 30 min and caught 1 pike and 1 rock bass. Both returned to bite again. 'Never give up.'

South Haven 5-26-14

Took the wife and kids out on Monday - not ideal times - but fished from 3pm until about 6pm. I waited for the crowds to clear before attempting to fish here on Memorial Day. We trolled straight out anywhere from 60 to 100 feet of water. I ran downriggers and full lead cores with spoons as well as 2 dipsey rods with dodgers and flies. I had all areas of the water column covered from 20 foot down to about 80. We never had a hit. Graph showed decent pockets of fish and bait but no takers. Great day to be on the water with calm seas and sun but fishing could have been better. Despite the day and time, I have never seen so many people on the piers, beaches and all areas lining the river - it looked like Daytona Beach.

Aero Hunter - Last 3 Days of Pre-Order Pricing

This product, produced by the New Tribe company, makers of professional tree climbing gear, is sort of a higher-end treesaddle, and was introduced last year. The product underwent some rigorous field testing, and I anticipated some design changes. Those changes have apparently been adopted, and the Aero Hunter Evolution will be available for shipment next month. Through June 1, New Tribe is offering a $40 pre-order discount.

A previous discussion here of this product:

I'm a treesaddle fan, and have pretty much hunted exclusively from them for the past ten hunting seasons. I ordered an Aero Hunter Evolution and look forward to putting it to the test.

Upcoming TVC Fishing Tournaments

Seen this in a local Traverse Ticker. Figured some may find it interesting. The $50K guaranteed payout for the largest salmon 80% of the state record is a big payout.

Quote:

The Ticker's Summer 2014 Tackle Box

May 28, 2014

By Beth Milligan

 - From the launch of a historic new fishing charter to Traverse City's quest to build a public fishing pier to several upcoming fishing events, The Ticker has your official 2014 summer fishing report.

Traverse City Fishing Pier

A proposed 550-foot fishing pier at the mouth of the Boardman River on Grand Traverse Bay is moving forward as local officials launch a search for a design firm for the project.

The city recently posted a request-for-qualifications (RFQ) seeking design work, engineering studies and construction drawings for the planned pier, which was identified as a high priority in several public planning and visioning processes over the last decade, including the city's 2010 Bayfront Plan. Traverse City was awarded a $232,000 grant from the Great Lakes Fishery Trust last November to fund the design phase of the project.

According to city documents, the pier “will provide unique, outstanding access for people of all ages, needs and abilities to fish for migratory and other species, and to learn about the Great Lakes, the importance of stewardship and the value, challenges and opportunities involving the fishery.” The city is accepting RFQ bids for the project through June 12.

Bailey's Tribal Charters

While dozens of fishing charters operate throughout northern Michigan, cousins and Grand Traverse Band (GTB) of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians members Derek and Billy Bailey hope to make history when they launch Bailey's Tribal Charters in June.

“This will be the first-ever tribal charter fishing operation by a tribal citizen from any of the five signatory tribes,” Derek tells The Ticker, referring to the five tribes that signed the 1836 Treaty of Washington guaranteeing Native American rights to fish and hunt in Michigan. “Our first launch will be historic in that context, and also symbolic of the exercise of treaty rights to fish commercially.”

The cousins initially plan to offer five-hour charters for 1-3 passengers out of Frankfort, with service later expanded to Benzie, Leelanau and Grand Traverse counties. Unlike most local charters, the operation will go primarily through GTB's Conservation Department for vessel inspection and license approval to operate on the Great Lakes.

Non-native passengers on the company tours will need to have a state-issued fishing license, and fish catch reports will be turned into the state for quota records.

Fishing Tournaments and Events

Several fishing tournaments and events will offer local anglers a chance to land bragging rights – and cash and prizes – across the region this summer.

On June 7, the 2014 West Bay Beach Trout Derby will pit two-man teams in a six-hour competition on West and East Grand Traverse Bays to catch the biggest trout. The rules of the competition have been honed so that the event “can be won by anyone,” according to organizers, making it fun for amateurs and pros alike. Entry fees are $125, with first place netting $1,000 (based on 30 entries).

On June 15, Grand Traverse Area Sport Fishing Association (GTASFA) will host the 15th Annual Bihlman Memorial Fishing Tournament at Mineral Springs Park in Frankfort. The event awards prizes in several categories, including Largest Youth Fish, and donates 100 percent of its proceeds to Camp Quality Michigan. GTASFA also hosts a weekly fishing league from May to September, with a $10 entry fee and cash and prizes (including kids' prizes) for largest fish caught each week.

Finally, after a five-year absence, the Salmon Classic will return to West Bay Beach, a Holiday Inn Resort, on August 29-31. The weekend offers over $75,000 in cash prizes and multiple events, including the Big Box Shootout, Ladies Classic, Big Fish Shootout, Sweet 16 and Main Event. Two “mega-fish prizes” are also offered, including $50,000 guaranteed for the largest Chinook salmon over 80 percent of the state record and $10,000 guaranteed for the largest Chinook salmon over the current Salmon Classic record. For registration and details, click here.

License for non-resident kid?

Strange question but I'd like to be sure. My 12 y.o. nephew will be here from out West in July and wants to fish. Obviously, Michigan kids under 17 don't need a license but what about non-residents? I don't see anything in the guide that makes a distinction but I don't like not really knowing. I can always call the DNR too, just thought I'd pick some brains here. Don't mind buying him one and may do it just to make sure he understands about licenses. I can always get him a sportcard, too.

More truth about Cancer.

http://ift.tt/1rffxw6

have posted a couple good articles lately, but the censors of M-S have deleted them because they contained cannabis content. Yes it has come to that !

It seems as though sharing truth and health among friends and fellow sportsmen has its limitations after all. I have been told that I cannot post that stuff here any more. It appears that some of the folks who donated money to the Fishing for BBQ events and the cancer center have a beef with me talking about cannabis medicines on this site. Perhaps their heartfelt donations are supposed to buy silence of injustice and lies.

Please pm and let me know how much I conned out of you for that cause. I will gladly refund your money out of my own pocket.I already feel bad enuff that I asked people to donate anything to the cancer industry.Almost as bad as having pretend friends stabbing me in the back.

Karma fascinates me ! :D

The above article has some useful info on ways to prevent cancer from coming into your life. Wouldn't it be great if an industry that was interested in improving our health, would tell us these things before we get the disease? I see it all the time, people refuse to change their bad habits until something bad happens with their health. There are people who still smoke cigarettes while on oxygen . People with ulcers still drinking alcohol or soft drinks, stuff like that. Lots of cancer centers dont even mention diet changes to their patients. Hope the article helps a few last longer. Generating revenue has replaced health care in this country.

Found big cat sign

I was out morel hunting near a swamp in Ogemaw county this past weekend, and found what looked like a cougar kill. There was a deer carcass near a large pine tree that was just fur and bones left on the ground. What I thought was odd is that it looked like the carcass had fell from the tree, as a few broken branches hung just above the carcass. As I looked closer at the tree, I seen deer hair stuck to the bark in several spots going up, as well as many deep claw marks. In addition, there was some large scat near by as well, large as a bear's but shaped more like coyote. Do any other animals drag their kill up a tree? I got some pic's of the tree and scat i can post later.

Value

I just upgraded to an HDS 7. I have a perfectly good 3500C plotter with the 4000 antenna. Also a Lowrance 67X graph that works perfect. It has speed and temp. The 3500C has a lakemaster chip in it.

Does anyone know what these would be worth as a package deal???

Thanks to all who reply.

Thumb smallies!

With the big boat in to be re-powered and a weeks vacation to kill I've been pounding the smallmouth from Caseville to Grindstone. All the fish are being caught while wading or off shore. Last night I landed 3 bonus walleyes. Leeches are the ticket for me. I even managed to stumble across a couple of dozen morells while walking the woods to and from my fishing spot. Going to fish out of a canoe this morning to get to new waters. Good fishin!

St. Hoe 5/26

Well hit the lake this morning for my first time in awhile on my buddies boat. Fishing was quite good offshore 100+ FOW. Rigger and slider took our first bites of the day then died off besides a laker later. Diver took two hits with one coming off and the other being a Laker. Coppers started firing as the sun got higher. 150-200'. Green spoons were good. We kept 3 decent kings, stomach content was three medium sized alewife in one, and the other two were empty. Marked isolated bait balls most of the day, more so from 60'-90' when we first set lines. Total we released a small king, a steelhead, a coho, and three lake trout. 9 for 13. A few of the fish we lost felt decent, but hooks pulled. On our run back in while full throttle the outboard suddenly dropped a few mph, then quit completely. We were left floating in 70'. After a few phone calls to a buddy who is a mate, a local charter was kind enough to pull us back to port. Not sure if he wants his name mentioned or not but thanks a ton Capt. Mike.

Alpena

Went to Alpena out bye Thunderbay Island and boated 2 Lakers and a King on 5-23..Great night watching the sun go down over Thunderbay Island lighthouse. 70 FOW 50 down on the Lakers.King hit a Dipsy. All on spoons.

Sat and Sun reports....not good ..not bad

Saturday 3 of us hit the upper about 6:30am. Boated 8 of them across the river from the morning Techno crap. Then bang, they shut down. Called it a day.

ALmost the exact same thing further up river on Sunday except we managed 9. All in all a reasonable weekend. Limits are always the best but days like these keep you humble.

5/25 Bolles Harbor Evening report

Well, I just had to get the boat out on Erie this weekend. So, me and my 16 year old son decided this evening would be a fine time. Got to Bolles about 6:00 and ran out to about 3 miles north of Toledo Light, turned our tail to the rather fresh east wind and set out 4 rods with dipseys. Trolled for 1 1/2 hours with a couple silvers and a couple white perch to show for it. covered almost 4 miles without a sigle walleye hit and (maybe worse) never even saw a school of 'eyes on the Lowrance.

Launching and recovering my boat, I talked with 9 different boats, the talley: one boat had a 3 man limit (fished 9 hours) one boat had a 2 man limit (fished 10 1/2 hours), 2 boats had 1 fish each the other 5 zero.

Still.........gasoline $40, 4 doz crawlers $10, a half dozen Bates burgers and fries $10, 4 hours uninterrupted quality time with my 16 year old son......PRICELESS! :)

Port sanilac

Am today went 9 for 10 , 1 king, 8 Lakers,1 pink. Lost another screamer king. 40 to 50 fow. Surface temperatures 46 degrees. Cutbait rigs blue frog, green frog, clear red caught most of our fish. Fished Friday am for four hours from 45 foot of water out without a hit. Around 12 pm we got into a school of Kings. We picked up three cookie cutter, 15 lb Kings along with another seven over eight pounds. All but one fish came on boards and magnum spoons with purple being the best color. We had 150 copper and 3-5 color lead on the boards. Our seven year old rider, Lucas reeled in many of the Kings including the last 15 pounder.

Neighbor's barking dogs

Our next door neighbors have 3 of those "ankle biter" yappy dogs that wouldn't shut up when they were let outside.

We got this device from Amazon and pointed it to where they let their dogs out. It's been up for a day now and so far it works great. As soon as one of the dogs bark it immediately stops. The dogs seem to be frustrated by it, but at least are now being quiet, even when people walk by.

Anyone have any experience with this device? I'm concerned the dogs might eventually ignore the discomfort and start barking again.

Are any of trad guys out here headed west for a bowhunt this year? Elk? Deer? Antelope?

Two buddies of mine and I are doing a drop camp hunt for elk in southern Colorado the last week of September. I did a lot of DIY backpack hunting when I lived in Wyoming and I have done one guided elk hunt, which I didn't really care for. This will be a tweener. A wall tent camp will be set up and all the cooking gear will be there. We just bring food and hunting gear. We will camp on private ground and there is a wilderness area that butts up to the private ground. It is 12 miles to the nearest trailhead to get close to us in the wilderness area. I am taking gear to spike out if the urge hits me.

I will be shooting a 60# Schafer Silvertip recurve with Beman MFX 400s, 50 grain inserts and 225 grain heads. I just got home from a walk around the outdoor course at the archery club at daylight and I shot lights out. Now I just need to do a bit more conditioning.

What is wrong with this Lake Trout???

Caught this laker last night off Empire. We thought the girth was unusual, and it surely was! It's stomach was abnormal. Very large with tube like extensions. At first I thought possible VHS, but now I'm doubtful. Fish obviously seemed generally healthy, it sure was eating well!

Has anyone seen this before, any idea what it was? Is it safe to eat?

Shaggy boat blind

Anyone here use one? How you like it? I'm just wanting to buy the panels. The two I am looking at is Mud Buddy's shaggy panels and Rancho Safari's. I'm leaning more toward the Rancho as they seem to look much better and it's American made. I know Rancho made mud buddy's before they outsourced into China. That's besides the point.

How have they held up? How do they blend in around here, as in marsh environments? How are they in the cold? Just looking for opinions. Thanks.

The Nakina drive

Heading to Nakina in June, wondering if anyone has taken the "shortcut" from Manitouwadge to Caramat route. The road can be "dicey" but will save you time. Used it last year with a lot of wash-outs and decided to do the Hornepayne route on the way back. Have a new Dodge Ram Crew 4x4 this year for the trip so it should be better than the Mini-van used last year. So, if anyone has used this route I appreciate how the road was. Thanks

been checking this site all spring, taking in all the info i could to learn to jig...thanks for all the great info everyone. Had to join just so i could thank everyone...

St. joe 05/22 pm

Fished from 3 pm to 8 pm. Heavy fog until last two hours but very calm. Tried water from 75 - 45 with 50 - 55 deep the best. Landed 4 - 9. We caught 3 Coho and 1 King (16 lbs.) Best depth was 30 feet down. Every application had a hit except for wire. No fish hit a fly. Magnum spoons best.

Try again on Friday. Good luck fishermen.

Brookies

Haven't been trout fishing in many years. Got a bug up my butt to go do a little small stream fishing, hoping to catch some brook trout. Anybody willing to share any tips or general areas to try-not looking for anyones hot spots. Thanks for any info.

Where did you get a second mortage???

Looking to see if anyone can help me out. I am looking at purchasing a cabin( its actually someone's main home on 19 acres) in the northern lower. I talked to a mortgage broker at my local bank and everything sounded great to get pre-approved at a decent rate (3.375% for 15yrs or 4.25% for 30 yrs). Until I showed up and explained the property. Once they found out it was over 10 acres they told me they couldn't finance it and still sell off the mortgage. They currently sell off all mortgages to Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae. But said neither will buy a vacation/2nd home mortgage on anything over the 10 acres. But they could do an in house loan at over 5% which they would not sell off. So I went to Greenstone knowing they do vacant land and farm properties. With them I am looking at 5.25% for 15yrs or 5.8% for 30 yrs.

I'm planning on calling around to several places in the morning looking to see what I can find out. I am suppose to be looking at the place next Thursday and planned on putting in a bid. I have no problem providing the 20% down payment and shouldn't have an issue getting approved. But this road block could be a make or break the deal. It makes a huge difference in monthly payment and amount spent over 15/30yrs. I just cant believe the amount of acreage can actually make any difference what so ever on an interest rate. Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Draft pick

Just heard the news that the pistons move down to ninth in the draft means they have to give their pick to Charlotte for the Ben Gordon deal. My god I really loved joe d as a player and he's a good person but what a lousy gm he was. Terrible draft choices and fa signings as well. Charlie V, Ben Gordon, josh smith, darko. The list goes on. Good luck Stan. I hope you're the guy.

Avila may be looonng gone,

Ah ha made ya look! Just kidding, but it looks like Al Avila (Alex's Dad) could be offered the GM job with the Snakes. It also looks like Gibby may be in a bit of trouble there with some questionable in game moves. Remember Gibby's responses when asked about the Detroit job, says all is good in Arizona. I thought sure Arizona would be battling for 1st place out there in the West. Its up to La Russa, maybe he will consult Jim about Avila...

Something different.

Well needless to say I didn't get these out of the bay but I thought you guys would like seeing something new. Was in Florida last week and went grouper fishing. Caught two nice grouper and 20 lane snappers. Snappers are just as tasty as perch. Very fun to catch. Boat is ready to go (my dad switched points and condenser for electronic ignition) so hopefully I can get some gators this week.Attachment 63492Attachment 63493Attachment 63494Attachment 63495

hello

Hello:fish:

Boat value?

I am looking to find the value of a boat. Its a 14' Lund Adventure series, circa 1992, I believe. My wife's gma owns it, but I am the only one that uses it, she doesn't drive, husband has passed. I would like to buy it from her but I am having a hard time finding a price for it. I looked at the NADA book price and it said "suggested list price of $2850, average retail of $1010. Was the $2850 the original price back 22 years ago? Also does $1000 sound about right for a 22 year old boat?

This includes boat, 25 hp Johnson of about the same time frame, and shorelandr trailer.

Thanks

The Koch Bros are at it again....

Millions of unsold NEW cars wasting away around the world

"Houston...We have a problem!...Nobody is buying brand new cars anymore! Well they are, but not on the scale they once were. Millions of brand new unsold cars are just sitting redundant on runways and car parks around the world. There, they stay, slowly deteriorating without being maintained.

General Motors is particularly guilty and whose inventory at dealer lots just hit a new record high.

The car industry cannot stop making new cars because they would have to close their factories and lay off tens of thousands of employees. This would further add to the recession. Also the domino effect would be catastrophic as steel manufactures would not sell their steel. All the tens of thousands of places where car components are made would also be effected, indeed the world could come to a grinding halt."

went out

Started to go out tonight but lights went out as I was leaving canal. I checked everything I could in the dark. All visible fuses are okay, everything else works including bilge, motor, live well, and trolling motor. I got caught in a heavy rain Friday night which I guess can have something to do with it. My lights and fish finder are on one fuse and neither work. I'm going down when it gets light to work on it but if I have no luck I will pay someone for their services if I can't get it to work. If I take the boat out to dealer because it's under warranty I'm looking at 3 weeks without a boat.

Lake MI Lake Trout Consumption and Fish Advisory

Just wondering any opinions and/or any known facts about the dangers/risks of eating Lake Michigan Lake Trout, specifically from the grand traverse bays? The advisory suggests eating ZERO lake trout, but they spend millions of dollars raising and sticking them? I catch and love eating them but due to risks have severally reduced my intake to probably 1 or less meals in a month. I've heard the toxins in them can due harm to your reproductive organs, and since I'm 28 and just starting a family, I figure it's best to take caution. Whenever I clean and do eat them, I trim away as much fatty tissue / lateral line dark meat as possible. I've also heard they grind up the entire fish, entrails and all, when testing them, so I wonder if care is taken If moderate consumption is ok? Or do they test then at all with a well trimmed fillet? Thanks In Advance, tights lines all!!

Avila STILL sucks!

Someone please find us a real catcher. His brief moments of professionalism are far outweighed by his lousy hitting and mediocre catching.

Right down the middle and he watches it go by. Swing and a miss on a ball way out of the strike zone. Over and over and over and over and over again.

Ortiz

I was just thinking how if Ortiz doesn't get a sure double or xtra base hit he shows no hustle and how I would not want him on my team. He does not show any kind of hustle! Low and behold Jon Kruk has a rant on it! How his lack of enthusiasm might bring a struggling team down! I kinda agree with Kruk.

Fred for Cy Young.....

Another gem thrown by the number 4 man in the Tiger rotation!!!!! What if the Nats wanted him instead of Dougie, he's making DD look like a genius by not trading him in the Off season for so many years now. Just like Max, his curve ball is making him an exceptional pitcher thus far. $#%^ canning the hanging slider was a smooooth move, bold! Just stay away from the Angels though lol. I'm a liking him more and more each start, I'm starting to believe!!!!!!

On another note, did I see that correctly? Tigers bully went from worst to first this month???

550 white bass

Don't ask me why but me and a buddy decided to break our record of 350 white bass. We showed up on the river at noon and nobody was fishing for them, must have been the forecast.

However the weather was perfect. We were set up and ready to go. Have to have braid to hall them in without a net and have to have a glove on to avoid getting your hands chewed up.

So the count between two of us in six hours was 550. I'm not sure I want to fish for them again this year.

Stubborn

Been a very quiet morning at my field set. 9 am I see a tom coming down the edge of the neighbors woods. I can see him looking in the woods. He goes that way and hooks up with another tom. Then another tom comes from the west inside the woods and joins them. I'm guessing they got hens. Will gobble every time I call but only move 100-150 yds left and right. If I could only hunt that woods it'd be lights out. Going on 1 hr 30 minutes of gobbling their heads off now.

Who will win the cup this year?

So the wings obviously didn't make it. (There's always next year) I'm sure glad to see Boston get beat out. Also pretty glad Pittsburgh didn't make the cut either. Next team I wanna see go is Chicago. I watched a bit of the LA/Anaheim game earlier and LA looked top notch. Quick was AMAZING in goal. If he can keep it up, I think LA has a shot at the cup. What do you guys think? Any favorites or predictions?

Greatest Switch Hitters

I was running thru some baseball sites on the net tonight and came across "Sportsbreak.com". They had a spread on what they determined to be "The Greatest Switch Hitters in Baseball History", they had listed 10 of them. I saw some no-brainers there and then some that were maybe questionable or maybe not, and one that was left off the list that I felt was very glaring. I tried to download it here but couldn't so I went ahead and typed it out so please bear with me.

1. Pete Rose LHB .307/119/937

RHB .293/ 41/376

2. Mickey Mantle LHB .281/370/1004

RHB .330/161/486

3. Eddie Murray LHB .293/362/1341

RHB .276/142/576

4. Roberto Alomar LHB .314/140/824

RHB .268/ 68/298

5. Chipper Jones LHB .303/361/1206

RHB .304/107/417

6. Tim Raines LHB .294/119/686

RHB .293/ 57/294

7. Lance Berkman LHB .304/316/1001

RHB .260/ 50/233

8. Reggie Smith LHB .287/251/790

RHB .288/ 63/302

9. Frank Frisch LHB .320/73/869

RHB .304/32/374

10. Carlos Beltran LHB .281/256/970

RHB .287/107/372

The glaring omission IMO, Victor Martinez as a LHB Victor hits .305/106/576 and as a RHB he's .302/59/268. Not only that, but in limited at bats Victor hits .368 Right Handed vs. a Right Handed pitcher. Another thing I noticed is there are quite a few "Modern day" players on here. Without looking back over the entire MLB History, it would seem there would have been more switch hitters than Frankie Frisch. I did notice that the players seem to hit near the same or mostly better left handed. Do Lefties make for better switch hitters? What say ya'll, do you think Victor should be on this list? What should be the cut off for years played to get in the Hall, or included on lists like this?

What shrooms are these?

I'm not really a mushroom guy. I don't like store bought ones and have never tried wild ones-- mostly because I never find them in the woods. Well today while turkey hunting I found a group of these, there was about 30 of them total. Anyone know what kind they are? Are they edible?

Sorry for the quality, I took the pics with one hand while I tried not to shoot myself in the face.

Bow Bird Down

After a few close calls with the BIG Boss my season comes to an end with his little brother. 10.5" Beard 7/8" Spurs

The coolest part about this bird is I got him without being in my blind and using my new Magnus Bullhead setup.

Knowing that I had to leave the silent woods around 9 to get to work I decided at 8 to get the camo on and ventured out of the Double bull with the bow, my hen decoy and mouth call.

Leaving behind at the blind is my Full strut and Jake.

Walking slowly about 300 yard down a ridge away from my blind I hear a faint gobble, so I go another 100 yards find a huge Oak to hide behind and set up the hen and wait.

I think OMG they are coming right into bow range….. WRONG a hen totally busted me  and they all take off down the ridge away from me.

All bummed out thinking that the morning is over I walk back around the ridge towards my blind only to see 2 Tom's beating the crap out of my decoys that are 10 yards from my blind.

Now I'm at least 80 yards from them thinking I should have stayed in the blind, I carefully sneak from one Oak to another getting closer and closer until I get within bow range and let the bullhead fly.

Total decap. :yikes:

There is no wondering if you had I good shot or bad shot with this broadhead.

Certainly not text book but it was a pretty exciting morning’s hunt.

I think next year I will be spending a little more time out of the blind after the big one.

Never leave the table....

Never leave the table...that is, when you're having fun!

This is a pic of our 14' craps table that we use for our school's fundraising casino events. For years, we had used a little table that a volunteer slapped together out of a sheet of plywood. Only about 5 players could get on the table to play on the piece of junk. This table can handle 22 plus the dealers.

I purchased this battleship on eBay from a dealer-school in California for $2,500, including shipping. Then, we slapped on a new, custom layout with our school logo printed on it and put this baby to work.

A few people screamed that even at $2,500, that we'd never make our money back. WRONG! Recovered the investment on the first night! And, that was about 10 years ago.

Now thinking about buying acquiring a second table, as the game is gigantically popular with players, young and old. Anybody know of a 12' or 14' craps table for sale or that somebody might want to donate? Maybe we could get the thing in action for our huge school festival that we put on over the 4-Day Memorial Weekend?

Look closely at the spots on the dice. Uh oh!

Finally a heavy hatch yesterday afternoon after that rain went thru in the Big Waters of the Au Sable River. Some giant browns were up and rising. One of the few times these big browns rise in the afternoon!

Will this cold tonight slow down production?

I'm a rookie when it comes to morel hunting. Will the cold temps tonight screw everything up? Either way I will be hitting the woods tomorrow.

SB 869 bass season bill passes House 108-1

Great news! SB 869 the bass season bill has passed the entire Michigan House today 108 yes to 1 no. The bass season bill is returned to the Senate to be enrolled in their next journal so it can be sent to Governor Snyder for signing. Both chambers approved immediate effect so as soon as Governor Snyder signs it all the old bass season limits in state law are removed.

We are communicating with Governor Snyder tomorrow to make sure we are still on track with his support of SB 869.

Once he signs SB 869 the NRC will have real authority to create a new Fisheries Order to create a new bass season for 2015. Right now, the options being reviewed to go to the public soon all include some type of year-round bass season for Michigan.

We are waiting for final languages on 2 or 3 options to go to the public very soon, all of which allow some version of year-round Michigan bass season. We have a great deal of support from other angler groups and the politicians.

The odds that we will finally have a year-round bass season in Michigan starting in the 2015 season have greatly improved. Many persons have worked hard to get to this point including Mark Zona and Kevin VanDam among the many others. Thank you very much to Michigan Legislator leadership from numerous elected officials - particularly Senator Hansen and Representative LaFontaine.

Fished with my mom and brother on Sunday for our annual Mother's Day trip. We fished from 9-3 ended up catching about 12 northerns, about 10 small mouths and about 5 largemouths. Fished east side of Grosse Ile, tried trolling picked up one bass the switched to casting bomber long a's and medium little Cleo's. silver and gold were the best colors. The biggest pike was 34" long the rest were 25"28" long! - - -

Weapon locking system.....

I'm not sure how I feel about this system lock. The piece states that the NRA is against, but doesn't give what their exact position is. What say ya'll? Safer? 'Mo better? I've have always been of the opinion "New isn't always better"? Will this system become a Political hot potato? Any remarks?

And then we have this possibly coming on line in the Military, and as we know once it has been established it will probably be offered in a civilian model. Myself, I like it but I doubt I could get used to it the ole "Can't teach an old dog new tricks. How do you feel about weapon firing capability being basically taken out of the hands of the shooter and put into the control of a computer?

05-14 SCR limit. Plus some possible good karma

Launched out of Marine City this morning after all this rain. The water was like chocolate milk. Motored south until I finally found clean/stained water. I fished the edge of the mud line in the cleaner water and picked up 7 before 10:30, then it shut down. I lost another coho near the boat (2nd of the year). The wind was less than they forecasted and it was very pleasant out there until the rain returned. Nearly all fish were caught in 40 fow on the set up shown in the attached picture (edge of live-well).

While out there today, can't help but think I saved 4 lives. I was on my drift when another boat struck something while making what appeared to be another run back up to the top. I heard them attempt to start the engine several times to no avail. Just then I noticed a freighter make the turn around the island and head north. The disabled boat was in the middle of the shipping channel and had a kicker motor on it. After a minute or two nobody was on that kicker attempting to get it started, all while the freighter was heading right at them. I yelled to them "freighter" while pointing. No response, and didn't even look. Two more attempts, nothing. I threw my rod on the boat and motored over to them. I told them they better get out of the way a freighter was heading right at them. They literally just looked at me like a deer in headlights. They had a rope in the front of the boat, so I began yelling give the that "effing" rope, I gotta get you out of here. Finally one of them threw me the rope while the freighter was sounding the horn. I didn't even have time to hook the rope to my cleat. I held the rope with one hand while throttle/steer with the other. I even had to yell to the guys to steer the boat while towing them. We got out of the way with seconds to spare.

With my blood pumping, I looked over to the 4 guys and the driver says "someone forgot to take the thing off the motor." I look, and I see the transom saver stuck in the prop. I asked if they were good to get back to shore, and the driver said yes. There was a little language barrier however, I find it hard to believe none of the four guys knew how to say "thank you."

There is no doubt that freighter would have hit them because they were not signaling they were disabled at all. The freighter captain would have just figured they were "some stupid/stubborn walleye jiggers."

My very next drift I punched my ticket after a my longest drought of the day. Apparently the walleye Gods were watching.

The Walker Tavern Wheels vintage "base ball" club opened its 2014 season May 10 with a home game against the Detroit Early Risers. The Wheels were victorious in the opener, beating the Early Risers by a respectable score of 28-3. Base ball games, played according to 1860s rules, are just part of the fun this summer at Walker Tavern Historic Site, located in Cambridge Junction Historic State Park near Brooklyn, Michigan.

This is the seventh season for the Wheels. The season runs through Aug. 30. Many of this season's games will be played on Sundays, in conjunction with the popular Walker Tavern Farmers Market.

"We play 'base ball' by vintage 1860s rules, which means no gloves and wool uniforms in July," said player Jim Terwilliger. "We have a loyal fan base that not only roots for us at home games but follows us to the away games as well."

The complete season schedule and other team information is available at http://ift.tt/1msIv73. The team is sponsored by the Friends of Walker Tavern.

Walker Tavern is one of 11 nationally accredited museums administered by the Michigan Historical Center, an agency within the Department of Natural Resources. Where can you get non ethanol gas for outboards

Looking for non ethanol or recreational gas in the downriver area. Just had my carbs done and they recommended using it in my outboard.

What was it? Help.

This past ice fishing season I was icefishing gull lake around kalamazoo. I was fishing 107fow suspended at 35 - 40 ft and got something massive on. I was using a jigging rap. Fought it for about 30 seconds and it got off. Pike? Laker? Rainbow? Brown? I will never know the real truth and it will haunt me forever lol. Would appreciate your opinions. Thanks.

Azek (plastic) for exterior column bases?

Hello guys,

A trim carpenter is recommending Azek (PVC plastic) to replace my rotted column bases on the front portico/entry of my house.

He said they will be solid Azek, attached to the existing wood vertical (cylindrical) columns using stainless screws, then putty to cover the heads of the screws.

The column bases at the bottom are 12 x 12 square, about 2” tall, with a 12” diameter 2” thick round element, followed by a 12” diameter 2” tall element with a profile (ogee, sort of).

Question is - is Azek the right material for this application? He said it will be all solid Azek, cut on a CNC router.

Thanks for any input.
