Agility classes? Training?

My wife is kind of dead set on trying out agility classes with our 3yr old mutt. He is extremely intelligent, fairly agile, and has a ton of energy. He is a Yellow Lab and probably Hound Dog mix, about 80lbs and a decent swimmer too. I don't know much about the agility events or whatever. The cost seems very inexpensive at $85 for 7 weeks. I personally would rather train him to hunt birds. He jumps rabbits and deer all the time in the 10 acres near our house. Picks up a scent and follows it right to them. Maybe he is getting too old for this stuff? Any advice or insight would be appreciated.
