After learning everything I could to mentor my grandson in his first turkey hunt, I decided that I had so much fun I would give it a solo try! A little over 2 weeks ago I shared the photo of Jordan and his first bird which I called in for him. I was so geeked that I decided to give myself a shot at it and bought an over-the-counter leftover tag, which started today.
It took me about 15 minutes to get all set up where I thought my best chances would be, including my cheapo plastic decoys. I starting working the yelp and after about 10 minutes thought I heard a return gobble from quite far away. Over the next 5 minutes or so I would get a very occasional gobble but each time it was closer and closer. Goose pimples, or should I say turkey pimples were standing up all over my body! My heart was pounding 1000 mph as I strained to get the first glimpse of the coming bird. Hearing it but not seeing it is INTENSE!
Finally, I caught a partial view of a full fan just over the crest of the hill. A few purrs and he was within 30 yards. He went right down! I was in the woods at 4:30 and back to my car by 5:00! It's a bigger bird than Jordan's, who is disappointed - not that I got a bigger turkey, but that he won't be able to go hunting with me, like we had planned, on Wednesday! A 9 inch beard - not bad for an old rookie, eh? I hope there's no sophomore slump!
