I went to the Rapid River boat launch this morning to check out the DNR taking walleye eggs for the Thompson Creek Hatchery. Sounded like they had a lot more "by-catch" in the nets today, (meaning pike, suckers, carp, bullheads, and some REALLY nice perch!) They would bring the fish back to shore and sort them by sex and whether they were ready to spawn, or not. After they were sorted, the ripe fish were stripped of eggs and milt, tagged with jaw tags, and released. Would have gotten more and better pictures, but my camera battery died.
Anyway, the bays are pretty much ice free, now. Docks are in at Rapid River. Kipling is still closed. Gladstone harbor has their docks in. Escanaba River is still locked up. Haven't been by Esky harbor, yet. Ford River has docks in and the launch looks good. Cedar River has it's docks in,(been hearing of a few walleyes and browns being caught there.) Sounds like the dock is in on Garden bay, too. No word from Nahma, yet.
Time to get the boats out!
