I just ordered a Garmin 551dv (down view) along with the cover and the speed sensor. Yes, this one is NOT built into the transducer. From what I can find, it has received very good reviews. Does anybody own one of these units?
Also, from what I can glean from the installation video, it says to mount the bottom of the transducer approx. 3/8" below the bottom of the boat. I know it has to be clear of the stringers and rivets. Any suggestions on setting the proper depth below the boat? I talked to my local marina and they want $150 - $200 to set everything up. If I were purchasing a new boat from them, then absolutely. I can't see spending that much to have something installed that shouldn't take more than 30 minutes! It is going on a 16 ft 1995 Sea Nymph (prior to Lowe buying them). It has a 25 hp Johnson tiller mount. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
