Can't miss lakes for a fishing trip?

Don't pay no attention to those saying not to bother with Houghton Lake. Houghton has some good bass & walleye fishing. I would stay away from the more popular areas like the south shore weed bed & west shore as those areas get hammered.

Lake St. Helen has some good bass fishing in the pads & they have the hammer handle pike like Houghton.

If you have a small aluminum boat & an electric trolling motor or long push pole then I'd give the Reedsburg Dam Flooding (west of Houghton Lk) at try. It's loaded with stumps, trees, pads & cabbage. The bass fishing is great if you can keep your lure away from the hammer handle pike.

Higgins can be good for smallies but it gets too crowded with pleasure boaters in the summer.

Fletcher's is a long drive from Houghton & is not the fishery it once was. If you are willing to travel that far then Grand Traverse Bay in Traverse City (west & east bays) is a far better fishery than any of those mentioned. Grand Traverse Bay has excellent smallie fishing & if you can find them there are some big pike in there as well.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
