Woodcock print....
Hey guys and gals I'd been looking at this woodcock print on and off for a bunch of months at a local (Grand Haven) antique mall. After a meeting or two with my finance guy, watching the DOW every day and paying attention to future predictions for Treasury Bond rates I finally "bit the bullet" and plunked down $30.80 hard cash (including frame, sales tax etc.) for this woodcock print.
It appealed to me as it represents much of the type of woodcock cover that I hunt (low, thick, wet mixed cover) as opposed to the usual "New England" styled woodcock prints - two guys with a setter on point, shooting while smoking their pipes, with an abandoned apple orchard in the background bordered on one side by a crumbling stone wall and the other by a babbling brook tumbling down a hillside etc. well you get my drift - New England perhaps, Michigan hardly.
.
In the lower right hand corner are the initials - "A.J.R.". A cross posting on another upland shooting website and a Google search have been unproductive as to who "A.J.R." is or most probably was. Any info. would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately the print is glued to the cardboard backing so I have no idea if any info. is on the verso of the print.
The more I look at it the more I like it. It's hanging in my mud room so I'll get a look at it every time I come in my house but most especially after returning from a woodcock hunt with my once "old" but now "new" Browning Superposed Super-Light. But I'll save that story for another post.
Thanks in advance.

According to this study, I am a blob to the deer, "a hunter wearing camouflage containing many subtle shades of green and/or brown looks just like one big blob to deer"

Storing eggs/skein
What do you guys carry your preferred eggs/skein in?
I have some old Wapsi fly head cement and lacquer glass bottles I was thinking of cleaning out and putting eggs in to carry on the river. My only question is; will any leftover/uncleaned residue leave a smell or taste behind on the eggs that salmon or steelhead will sense?
I realize they aren't very big, but if I load a few of them up, that should get me through an outing or two. Should I just abandon them and pick up some small mason jars?

Tadpoles from offshore tackle?
Has anyone used these tadpoles from offshore tackle in place of dipsys or leadcore for salmon? I heard Mark Rommanic talk of these at a show and afterwards they were sold out and havent seen them anywhere since. I kind of like the idea and i guess they would give more feel.
Onboard charger install
I picked up a 2 bank cabelas charger and am wondering if anyone has ever lengthened to cables going to the batteries? I have very limited options and cannot mount it near the batteries due to lack of storage compartments in the boat. Basicly the batteries are in the back/charger in the front.
Seems simple, buy some wire of same gauge, cut and splice , keeping the inline fuses at the battery end right?? Or is there more too it?? Will it loose amps cuz of the distance???

dunked trolling motoe
My row boat flipped off the hoist last night in the storm. The trolling motor was on the back. We got it back and everything is fine.
The problem is the trolling motor was upside down in the water over night. Has anyone ever dunked one before?
As there was no power to it I am hoping that if I dry it before I hook it up it might be ok.
It is a Minn Kota.
Any help anyone can give will be greatly appreciated.
I know do not let the kids tie the boat down anymore.
Thanks,
NF

Michigan Gone Wild Spring Turkey Episode!
This is part one of our 2014 Spring Turkey Episode! Enjoy!
7-25 and 7-26-2014 Saginaw Bay Walleye
I fished Fri with Tom T, John V and John's grandsons TY and Zach. The kids were doing a good job reeling and netting fish. The bite was tough where we were at but fish were nice. The bigger fish were barely noticeable when they hit and swam with the boards. Thanks all for joining me. :)
Sat I fished with Kevin Chuck and Nick. We slowly pulled 19 walleye from the bay. Bouncers and meat like always. We had to find and stranded boater in the dark and tow him in. By the time we were done the DNR and CG were involved. Towing a boat through a set of unlit cans and up a river partially blocked by a barge was a bit of a challenge. Every one onboard was involved and it was a joint effort for sure. Two other boats helped us out with information and helping light up some danger spots. I was glad to make it home but stuff like that takes it's toll. I couldn't sleep most of the night. Rescue efforts in the dark is about 10 times more difficult than during daylight hrs.

7/27 Great Morning on LSC
Had a great morning on LSC, straight out from Crocker Launch, 15-17 FOW, used drop shot and Tubes when water was calm, switched to cranks and Spinnerbaits when wind picked up. Caught over a dozen SM Bass including a 21-incher, two Muskie 40 and 42-incher, three keeper walleye on plastics, a 10-inch perch, two sheepshead, and several rock bass. We are blessed to have such a great fishery next to a major Metroploitian area.
Martinez and Martinez
Man, what happened to these guys? They pretty much carried the team before the ASB! I never expected JD to keep up that pace, but I thought Victor would. Pitching aint been bad though. Now we can't hit. That's what happens I guess when you play the better teams I guess. We need to get back to the Central.
Roscommon Area: Jack Pines Dying?
I was up in Roscommon County Friday and Saturday with some family. There is a huge bunch of Jack Pines surrounding the one cottage that have all died in the last year. These are 4"-6" diameter trees of about 12'-15' tall.
There is not a few but dozens and dozens of dead ones.
Is there something going around this area that's killing them?
We have some work to do on getting these all cleared out! :dizzy:
Anyone want some free bonfire wood for cutting them out?
Thanks,
Dave

A few pic's from our last few trips on the bay before we head to Ludington after King's!!
We are still running lead 3-4 color, jets 30-60 back, Yeck chrome and silver spoon and J. Deez triple nipple have been our best. Fishing from the H sail boat marker towards 1 and 2 have been good for us.
St. Joe 7/26 A.M.
Trolled from daylite til 9:00. Not 1 hit saw 1 boat get one Skamania. People on pier had nonstop action. Why would the fish all be right next to the piers? Water in river was 72.
Moving up from florida
hello...My wife and daughter and i are planning on moving back up north there next year..we moved here from "that other state" about 25 years ago..My parents had a cabin on West Twin lake in Lewiston in the late 60's -early 70's..loved that place and wish he had kept it..but i love that country up there and decided it was time to go back...not too sure on what area but if you draw a circle around Gaylord, Lewiston,Mio,Houghton Lake.we plan on buying 10-15 acres and doing a lot of fishing and hiking around in the snow.We are just really tired of the heat and hurricanes, so are looking forward to moving up there, enjoying the beautiful country...been looking for some forums on living up there and found this place so seems like a great place to start..hope to contribute in the coming months..

This morning my wife saw on the news that a body was found by the Macomb Orchid trail and texted me about it. My wife and I were bike riding in that same EXACT spot yesterday at about 5:40pm. We were within a hour or so of this happening. Being a CPL holder, we are allowed to protect our self and others if their life is in danger. If we happened to be at the right place, at the right time when this poor girl was being murdered, I would have lit this that piece of **** up! Grrr !!!!!!

Dog Days....
Game 100 has the Detroit Tigers looking like this. It is exciting having our Detroit Tigers in 1st place in the Central 15 games over .500 with a 57-42. It was just a few short years ago (it feels to me) we were not playing meaningful baseball games in August and September. But as it sits right now we are; 4th in Runs Scored (474), 2nd in BA (.279), 2nd in OBP (.333), 2nd in Slug (.440).
Our pitching is, well, lagging a bit overall....23rd in ERA (.403), 10th in Quality Starts (57), 19th in WHIP (1.32), and 24th in BAA (.260).
When it comes to "Power Rankings" just a few short weeks ago we were 7th overall but have climbed to 3rd and have held that position for 2 straight weeks. Overall it sure does look good for the Tigers to win their 4th Central Crown in a row despite some rather middle of the road pitching performances. Game 100 tonight against Mike Trout and the Los Angles Angels featuring Drew Smyly v. Boz Skaggs.
Speaking of lefty Skaggs he has a high earnie with, get this, left handed batters hitting .300 and righties around .260.
Yep, the "Dog Days of Summer" are officially upon us and the Tigers are in 1st place 7 games up, Thank You Mike and Dave!!!!!

7/24/2014, Saginaw Bay, Au Gres, Fishing Report
It's a good thing my customers booked an 8-hour charter today because the first five hour of the trip were extremely slow, but the last couple hours saw Saginaw Bay cough up over 20 nice walleyes. My customers were from Chelsea, Michigan today. In fact, some of them live less than a few miles from me, yet I had never met them before. The Chelsea crew brought along a fourth person from Ohio too. The morning started off with a lot more wind than was predicted. In fact, the wind really blew all day yesterday and last night too from the northeast. Right about the time we launched the wind shifted though to the northwest. We ran out in rollers from the NE with the wind blowing at about 15 knots from the NW. as we got out into the bay further though, the wind shifted more to the north. When I got to where I wanted to fish, the water temperature had dropped five degrees since Tuesday, so I motored south about a mile and the temp started to creep up, so we set lines there and started a long trolling pass heading south. We caught a couple walleyes right away, but then the action died right when the wind died down to almost dead calm. We then trolled for hours only taking a couple more walleyes. We did catch two jumbo smallmouth bass though. I measured the first one and it was 22" and likely weighed close to five-pounds. The second one might have been slightly smaller, but it too was a trophy class bass. Eventually, at about noon, the walleyes turned on and we had non-stop action until we filled a five man limit. The Hot N' Tots that produced so well on Tuesday did not take one walleye today, so I put out a spread of all spinner/crawler rigs fished near bottom using bottom bouncers to counteract the tough bite. The best color early was fire/tiger, but later they really went after silver spinners big time. Trolling speeds of 1.8 to 1.9 mph did most of the damage and the fish seemed to bite best when I was making turns on both the port and starboard sides. They are predicting a light southerly wind for tomorrow, so if that prediction comes true, the fishing should be outstanding. The fish we are catching are prime eating size fish in the 16 to 22 inch range, which make fine table fare. My customers today took part of their catch to H&H Bakery and Restaurant where they will enjoy a very fresh fish dinner.

Obama and the News
President Who Learns Everything Bad From The News Says He Doesn't Watch The News
Katie Pavlich | Jul 24, 2014
In an effort to impress fundraisers about how incredibly smart he is, President Obama recently told a group of rich California liberals this week that he doesn't watch the news because he already knows all about what's being reported. Interestingly, Obama claims to know nothing about the numerous scandals plaguing his legacy until of course...he learned it on the news.
I could list examples of former White House Press Secretary Jay Carney and Obama himself citing news reports as the administration's first time finding out about a particularly unpleasant issue, but I'll hand it over to Greg Gutfeld instead.

Beretta Moving
This has been rumored for sometime. Looks like it's now official and they're making good on their promise.
Quote:
http://ift.tt/1nA1DCn Beretta to move gun production from Maryland By Michael Dresser, The Baltimore Sun Updated July 22, 2014 Beretta U.S.A., the American arm of the iconic Italian firearm maker, said Tuesday that it would move all of its U.S. manufacturing activities from Prince George's County to Tennessee in response to the gun control law the Maryland General Assembly passed last year. Beretta, which has been making firearms in Maryland since 1977, employs about 160 workers at its Accokeek plant, according to board member Jeff Reh. He said the company expects to begin moving its production lines from the facility in May, and to wind up its manufacturing in Maryland by the end of 2015. Beretta's parent company has continued in the same Italian town for more than 500 years. "We tend to be a company that has deep roots," he said. "We didn't want to leave Maryland or even consider it but we decided it was the most prudent course of action. We could have been happy staying in Maryland for hundreds of years." Reh said Beretta U.S.A. employs about 95 people in its administrative offices in Accokeek jobs he said would remain in Maryland. The company's announcement immediately became a flash point in the governor's race between Democratic Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown and Republican nominee Larry Hogan. Hogan put the blame on Brown and the gun control law pushed by Gov. Martin O'Malley. "I am saddened to learn that the hard-working women and men I met at Beretta's factory in Accokeek in May will now lose their jobs as a direct result of the O'Malley-Brown administration's high taxes and punitive regulations," he said. "The loss of these several hundred jobs will tear through the local community.'" The Brown campaign said it was clear Beretta never planned to keep its production in the state. "At the end of the day, we understand why a gun manufacturer would oppose common sense gun safety measures, but Larry Hogan's opposition is more troubling," Brown campaign manager Justin Schall said. "Hogan opposes a law that prevents the mentally ill from getting guns, bans the sale of automatic assault rifles and 30-round clips to protect our children, families and police officers." The company had already announced plans to do all of its new manufacturing at the plant it plans to open in Gallatin, Tenn., next year. Reh said that Beretta's latest decision means that all of its gun-making activities will be consolidated there. Reh pointed to provisions of O'Malley's Firearm Safety Act of 2013 as it passed the Senate, saying they could have interfered with the company's manufacturing, storage and shipment of Beretta products in Maryland. While those provisions were removed by the House, he said the company remained concerned they could be revived in the future. "The chance we would go through that next legislative session or the one after that was just too great a risk for us to accept," Reh said. Prominent lawmakers, however, said the chances of those proposals coming back were nil. "There's been no sentiment in the House to revisit those provisions," said Del. Curt Anderson, a Baltimore Democrat who served on the Judiciary Committee when it considered the gun bill. A spokeswoman for O'Malley expressed disappointment in Beretta's decision but defended the law, which among other things banned sales in Maryland of some of the assault weapons the company manufactures. "We remain energized about all the jobs we're creating here in Maryland," spokeswoman Nina Smith said. "Since June 2013, Maryland has created more than 24,100 total jobs, and we're one of only 19 states in the nation that has recovered all of the jobs lost in the national recession." Del. Michael J. Hough, a Western Maryland Republican who serves on the Judiciary Committee, said Beretta gave lawmakers fair warning about its intentions. "I'm not surprised. If you combine our anti-gun laws with our high taxes, Beretta is just one of many businesses that have fled the state," said Hough, who is running for the state Senate. "There's a lot of people who are going to be leaving the state and having to pick up and move because of the blatantly political bill the governor passed." But Vincent DeMarco, a longtime activist who was one of the 2013 bill's chief backers, rejected Beretta's logic. "Their headquarters is in Italy, which has a lot stricter gun laws than Maryland does," DeMarco said. "I don't believe that's what's going on here. If they were serious about not wanting to be in a place with strict gun laws, they would move out of Italy." Beretta has long been an anomaly in Maryland a storied firearms manufacturer operating in a deeply Democratic state where polls show voters favor gun control measures by hefty margins. The company's interests have long received critical support from powerful Democrats representing southern Prince George's, notably state Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller. Miller could not be reached for comment Tuesday night. But when Beretta announced plans in January to build its new manufacturing plant in Tennessee, the Senate president chalked it up to economic and political factors. "The cost of labor in Prince George's County is much different than the cost of living in Tennessee," Miller said at the time. "I'd imagine the politics of Tennessee would be much more in line with the thinking of the administrators of Beretta." Beretta said Tuesday that it expects to invest $45 million in buildings and equipment at its Gallatin site and will employ 300 workers there. The company said it would meet with each of its Maryland manufacturing employees to determine their interest in relocating to the Tennessee plant. |

All are previously used Eastons of one type or another, all roll straight but most will need fletching attention. All have inserts installed, a couple will need nocks and lengths range from approximately 29 inches to 31 inches.
Could be cut down for Xbow use, general practice, or something to hand to the kids to use in hopes that when the time comes your "good hunting arrows" will still be where you hid them.
I also will throw 8 free "handyman special" aluminum Eastons [not pictured] of various spines and lengths in the box if you want them and I can make them fit. Roll good and I believe all have inserts but WILL need work to make them useable.
$20.00 for the entire lot shipped tyd anywhere in the state, $15.00 if picked up at the house 4 miles west of Shepherd. - See More Here: http://ift.tt/1pzVKSE

Minn Kota problem, moves on its own
I have a 3 year old Minn Kota Terrova with Auto pilot not I-pilot. I have a Lowrance 8 inch 1st gen mounted next to it sharing the sonar of the trolling motor. I have a problem with trolling motor moving on its own which will turn to the left and will continue until I press any turn direction on the remote. It does it with auto pilot on like it looses track of direction or north. Anyone else have the same problem or can tell me if my fish finder is mounted too close. I believe it usually does this with the fish finder on but I think it did it yesterday while the fish finder was off. Any suggestions will be helpful as I do NOT want to send it in for repairs because I need it as I fish a lot.
PM me and I can give my phone number if you prefer. It is extremely difficult to troll on Erie with it (with the waves) while pulling harnesses as it seems to be worse with bigger waves. (The fish finder is usually off when I have the problem on ERIE as I'm in the back of the boat. Thanks for any advise.

7/16 and 7/18 inner bay report
Hit the ole bay for an evening trip last wednesday. Figured they would have lock jaw after the cold front and based on the lack of trucks and trailer at the ramp I would have bet on a skunk. Jeff A. and I made the trip out to 19 fow and set up my favorite spoon spread and plugged away for 7 keepers. 2.0 - 2.4 SOG with spoons pulled behind jet 20's was the ticket. Color did not seem to matter much. Distance off of the boards ranged from 48 to 62. Jeff caught a monster as seen here in these pictures.

Decided to take a grumpy ole man trip on Friday. Took my father and father in law in hopes of putting them on some fish. My father caught the first five and my father in law reeled in the last 10. When we got to 10 keepers they both said they did not care about my limit. UM news flash that was not about to happen.:D:D:D Same spoon program as I wrote above, and same depth of water north and west of the plug. What a great way to spend the day with the two men who have had the biggest impact on my life. Father in law lost a nice one at the boat and I told him it was ok because he let me marry his daughter 19 years ago. That got a good chuckle out of both of them.

Au Gres 7-18; 7-19; 7-20-2014 Walleye Report
Friday:
I fished the skinny water with Jim M aka (Slowpoke), Ron, and Rod for a four man limit of eaters and some bigger fish. I was running 3 oz BB off the down rods and 2 oz BB off the boards all with short leads. I can't afford to buy lighter weights for shallow fishing so we do what we have to do. When the down rods get hit someone needs to reel the and someone better have a net in their hand. Same thing bringing in a board take the board off and reach for a net. I fished this method several times. The books say to do it differently. I guess the fish never read the books. We do a lot of unconventional stuff. I fished with Jim and Ron before in very rough water. Jim introduced me to Rod a new friend of mine. I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the water with these great guys. Hot colors were antifreeze, Hammered dirty copper, and the glow chartreuse. Thanks Jim, Ron, and Rod for joining me on the bay. Just four grumpy old guys getting along and getting it done. Thanks for the crawlers Jim.
Sat:
I fished with Larry M aka Rat City Hooker, Chuck, and Canyon. We returned to the scene that we fished yesterday. Same colors and presentations. Canyon was the guest of honor and being 7yo he got to reel all the fish in. I guess 20 nice walleye gave him a workout because he was nodding off on the ride back in. I brought some cupcakes out to celebrate Canyon's 7th birthday and we all sang happy birthday to him. I'll remember this trip as long as I live. I think we made some good memories for Canyon. Larry and Chuck are fantastic people and fishermen but this trip was all about the youngster. Thanks Larry, Chuck, and Canyon for making my day.
Sun:
I was a few miles from the Au Gres DNR Launch when I hit a deer. It was a bit foggy and I couldn't find the deer. Light damage to the grill and left front corner of my truck. I slammed on the brakes and my six pack cooler with crawlers on ice went forward and into the step down just aft of the cabin. I called 911 at the ramp to report the incident and told them I'd be on the water and would come in for a report later. A officer came to my home later to fill out a report.
I had the pleasure of fishing with Chris C. and his lovely daughters Amanda, Alexa, and Alexa's BF Nate. Amanda and Alexa do not fish like little girls. Chris has taught them well. We returned to the same waters I fished the previous two days and the fish were not cooperating. After a bit off trolling and waiting for them to turn on we pulled lines with one fish in the box. We made a run to some deeper water that has proved good before and it was game on almost immediately. A couple of doubles and we were five times better than a few minutes ago. The action slowed a bit until I found some fish hiding in the shade under some chart numbers. No these were not my numbers rather numbers NOAA placed on Chart I run on my Toughbook Chart Plotter. Same colors and weights as above but of course the leads were a lot longer. We took a four person miscount of 24 walleye and if you could tune out the bugs it was a beautiful day to spend on the bay. Thanks Chris, Amanda, Alexa, and Nate for joining me on the bay. I forgot my camera on the previous two trips but I captured this pic after tying things down in the lot. Chris, Thanks also for the venison jerky, back straps, and squash.

Thinking about finally quitting
Smoking that is. I'm only 25 been smoking for 10 years regularly. I tried quitting with no aid about a year ago. I made it 5 weeks but then got mad while I was drinking and that was the end of it. It was tough but I know I'm stronger than the urge. My question is for people who have done it. My insurance will pay for the Chantix (sp?) And I've heard mixed things about it. I don't mind using some help if it works. I want to be done for good. Just looking for some feedback I guess.

Manistee Salmon Run
If you were planning to jig for Salmon in Manistee Lake when typically would be the most favorable time to go? Obviously there are many factors but hoping for some advice/best guesstimate.
I was thinking first or maybe second week of August.
Thoughts? Any help/advice would be appreciated

Started fishing in about 60 fow this morning got half the lines set had a bump on rigger 29 down rv green jeans in 70 fow. Then picked up a steelie 50 down rv flounder pounder in 90 fow. Not long after picked up a pig king on 3 color with UV bloody melon. He took about 45 min to reel in. Needless to say his arms were a little tired. Then after a lure change picked up a small king on lemonberry on rigger 40 down in 105 fow. Fun morning on the water with a couple of first timers!(

Linwood 7-17
Fished Linwood 5-8:30 only put 5 in the box, lost just as many, and one short. Nice school of fish by sailboat buoy 18 FOW just North of the red/white channel marker. Others around us doing well, asked some at the dock how they did and they were tight lipped. Did better on spoons than meat, but did get a couple on meat.
BWB Thurday night 2 man limit
Me and my dad 8:30pm-10:30pm. Pullin wire, #7 raps and matzuo's. 50-60 FOW Canadian side, behind red can. Awesome night, no problems. A lot of people fishing American side last night. tightlinesyall
Photo gallery cleared out
All the photos uploaded to my gallery as well as the folders I created for them seem to have been deleted. Maybe they were lost in a server switch? All files were uploaded within the past 6 months. Ideas? At first I thought it was a problem with trying to view/upload from mobile, but my gallery stats show no upload data used.

Food plot ?
I was curious how early people plant there fall food plot? I usually plant mine in mid August but seems like it stops growing when we get a frost before it's done. I usually plant Shot Plot by evolved harvest and mix in a bag of frigid forage

Shupac Lake, Crawford County
I have posted questions about this lake in the past, but this year we are actually going. My brother, some friends and myself go on a camping trip every year to relax and fish.
Does anyone have any information on this campground and lake? I know the lake is stocked with trout and they are usually fished for at night. Myself and one other buddy are the only ones that fish. Our other friends fish once a year on this trip so if anyone would like to share some info to get them on some fish it would be much appreciated. PM's welcomed. We are not really species specific, just want to catch something for dinner if possible.
Also, if I read correctly Shupac is a no wake lake and live bait can be used with the exception of minnows? Correct?
I appreciate the info. If you are there on the weekend of 8/8 stop by and say hi.

Anyone on here collect antiques?
I've got an old Japanese Tansu I'm trying to sell on ebay right now. Called a few of the appraisers in my area that were listed online and none of them would answer their phones or return my calls. So I just kinda listed it blindly. Wondering if anyone has any interest in either telling me what it could be worth or is interested in the piece itself. It's up for auction right now but not much happening with that yet.

Fishing near South Glengarry Ontario
Hey y'all, I'm pretty pumped, I just sealed a seat to the south Glengarry area with some buds. They'll be bear hunting and I'm the fishing nut. I fish all species just for the record. I'm curious, since my quick online search hasn't netted me much info, if there's anybody on here that has been to the general area there fishing and what the results were-ie species targeted, with tackle insight. I will be taking gear for all species but looking to narrow my search for some good stomping grounds and info along. Either way should be a fantastic trip in expectation and an extra big thanks to all replies.

Charlevoix area Salmon
We are headed up to Lake Charlevloix for a week, the second week in August. I will definitely be chasing smallies on Lake C, but wanted to inquire about the Salmon bite at that time of year in Lake Michigan. We had been up there a few years ago, and when i was headed out bass fishing in the AM, a guy and i were talking at the launch and he indicated that the Salmon bite was great just a few miles or less outside of Charlevoix, cement plant area? Might be a nice diversion for the wife and I for a morning or 2, weather/wind permitting.

Rifle River
I'm going to be in West Branch this weekend and I was hoping to maybe try some new water out. I've never fished the Rifle before so any info on access and how the fishing is right now would be great. Thanks!
Also, how are the water temps? I'm a C&R guy and I don't want to be fishing there if it's over 70.

Michigan bass season regs public meetings, online survey 7/14-7/24
In order to get public input on proposed regulations to expand Michigan's bass fishing seasons, the Department of Natural Resources has announced an online survey and public meetings throughout the state in July. For the past year the DNR's Fisheries Division has been working with the Warmwater Resources Steering Committee (a public advisory group) to discuss possible expansion of bass seasons.
The regulation expansion options being discussed would increase fishing and harvest seasons. Under all options, bass populations would still be protected and include a winter no-harvest season, 14-inch minimum size limit and daily possession limit.
To gauge public opinion, both anglers and non-anglers are encouraged to complete the DNR's bass regulations survey, available here: http://ift.tt/1tGIh1X. The goal of this survey is to determine the level of support for increasing angling opportunities for largemouth and smallmouth bass through changes to existing fishing seasons.
Additional public input will be gathered via a series of public meetings. Dates, times and locations include:
A random selection of licensed anglers also will receive a survey in the mail.
For more information on these meetings, visit http://ift.tt/1pB1yPk.

What 7 weight reel?
I have a Sage TCX 697-4 rod that has become my go to steelhead and Alaska sockeye/silvers/rainbows rod. It's a light broomstick better suited to 7 wt line.
Looking for a premier, American made reel to handle DT floating line with 150 yards of backing.
So far I like the Tibor Signature 7-8.
Other suggestions?
Hatch? Nautilus?
Thank you!

Fast growing Shrub/biomass willow
Just wanted to share some pics of a type of willow I don't see talked about much on the habitat forums. I got some SX61 variety from double a willow last year, grew them all year and coppiced them in late winter. Now I have multi-trunks coming up and the biggest ones are over 6 foot tall. I am growing them past the point of browsing in my yard before releasing them to the deer. (Big enough to rub no doubt :)). They are bred for biomass and are meant to be coppiced after year 1 and harvest every 3 to 5 years I believe.
They are supposed to be full grown in 2 to 4 years so we will see. I have tried various hybrid willow (hramor, karsten, and big rock austree) and biggest is probably only 15 feet tall, most 10 foot or less after 4 years. Most of these were planted in plastic and tubed.
Anyway, like a lot of you guys I have a lot of issues with stuff getting destroyed so this is the route I am going now to get things established (This and using boxelder).
This is the base that was cut all the way back this spring, so it has grown quite a bit.
I did plant some on the actual property in plastic and fence them with plastic snow fence, but the deer collapsed the fence and they are all about a foot tall and browsed last time I checked.
They have some "after" pics on their website:

Busted!
I put out a few traps to rid myself of red squirrels that in the past, have found ways to make a home in my attic. I use peanut butter in the traps. Recently, the traps have been sprung and the peanut butter is 100% gone. No squirrels. No mice. No nothing. So, I put out my gane camera on the back porch and put a teasoon of peanut butter on a tree. Well, here's the culprit.
Blue water bridge.
Buddy and I pulled wire out in the lake tonight and had a quick limit in a little over an hour. Nice thing is the rain quit as we launched and didn't start back up till we got on the freeway to drive home:) cold steel and dog turd #7's were on fire! Nice eaters. Was a nice night on the water!

September Trip Planning
Hi everybody I'm back and looking for advise. Once again I am planning my late Sept. trip. Last year I stayed in a mom&pop motel in Beulah and paid for the proximity of Great Bear Dunes--what a dummy!! It was very close to the Betsie, Crystal, and Frankfort piers, but come on---. I am going back to old faithful "Travelers" in Onekema and saving $150. My question is, "Will fishing the channel from Portage Lake to Lk Mi get me into any salmon the last week of Sept.?" Also "Are there any small boat rental marinas open that late in the season?"
50 years ago my family spent two summers at the Portage Point Inn (now re-named) so I know the general area. Last year I fished at Homestead and snagged plenty but 0only one fair hooked in four days of non-stop fishing.
If anyone can give me a heads up it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks BUCK6060

Dnr bass season survey
Hey all, I recently came upon this survey for michigan bass seasons proposal and wanted to share with you all(if you haven't seen it yet). This is great that the dnr is taking steps for this, as it has been an issue in previous years. I'm not exactly looking for input, but I think it's important getting a chance to add input to the dnr so that we can further enjoy our great bass fisheries. http://ift.tt/VXyK7I

Port Sanilac 7-11-14
Went 4 for 8 or 9. Started out in 80 fow. Stayed between 85 and 105 most of the night. The high lines (2 and 3 color lead) took most of the early action. Landed a pink and lost several other steel. Orange crush and blue dolphin took hits on the lead core. 1 laker came a rigger set right on bottom on a yellow tail, another on an orange/black spoon down 50, and the last hit a free slider blue dolphin with rigger set at 80. Couldnt buy a bite on the copper or dipsy rods. North troll with speed between 2.5 and 2.8 seemed to best.

Illegal to cut shooting lanes?
I am looking at the new hunting and trapping digest and on page 64-65 under Additional Hunting Rules there is a section titled It is illegal to: and the last bullet point says "Cut branches, limbs, trees, or other vegetation for shooting lanes or to construct blinds." Am I missing something or is every hunter who has ever cleared a branch out of the way in violation?
Need help finding a Lansing area Vet?
I recently moved to the Lansing Area and am looking for a veterinary clinic that works well with sporting dogs.
I did a search of the MS Forums and found good recommendations for Schultz Veterinary clinic. I visited their website and it appears they specialize in reproductive vet services and I am concerned they may not be the right choice for a non-breeder. I have an older lab and and am picking up an 8 week lab puppy tonight.
We have the MSU Veterinary Research Hospital for serious emergencies so I'm looking for a vet who knows and respects the basic needs of high energy sporting dogs for routine advice, vaccinations, spay, microchip, etc.
Any advice is appreciated.

Marquette Area?
I'm going to be in MQT from 7/17-23 and wanted to do some trout fishing. It's not really a fishing trip--just hoping to sneak out for a couple hours in the morning while my wife sleeps in. I know the area well, though haven't fished there much. I'm figuring to hit the Choc, maybe the EB Escanaba too. Any suggestions about flies, methods, or better times to fish? Any help welcome.

Boat blind??
Contemplating building or buying a blind for my boat. Wondering what everyone else is using or have used? What worked and what was junk? I'm def sold on the Momarsh Grass just looking for opinions on what you have used for frame, either store bought or home made. Pics would be sweet! Boat is a 542 War Eagle, must be easily removable from boat as i often bounce back and forth from the draw and my secret spots throughout season. Also need to be Longtail friendly.
Buy or build? (If buy what brand?)
Quick set or solid frame?
Roof or no Roof?
Shooting holes or flip out panels like a layout blind?
This design looks pretty sweet...or?

Grand River Fishing (Grand Rapids Area)
Hey guys, I have been sport fishing for awhile now (bass mostly) and have gotten pretty decent at it but have decided to try to try to feed myself fishing. I'm really trying to go after catfish, walleye, and whatever other good eating fish there are in the grand river. My question is basically what kind of tackle should I be using for these type of fish and what are some well known cat producing spots near GR? I have yet to catch anything from the river (I should mention that I fish from shore) and I would really like to change that.
Thanks!
