Rapid City Area Steelhead

I'm traveling up to the Rapid City area tomorrow with a friend of mine. He has a meeting with a well guy, and I was hoping to maybe try and catch some steelhead somewhere? I'm more of a walleye fishermen, but I'm just going to have fun and try something new. Any area by Rapid City that you know of would be awesome. Not looking for any honey holes or secret spots, just a body of water you think or know the steelhead might be. PM'S welcome. I really appreciate ANY tips or info.

For the Pointing dog folks!

Last week or so there was a thread on the forum that seems to have

vanished. I was doing some archival research and came up with some rather older UK Pointer/Setter trial videos. Some of you may enjoy as my British friends call it the Sport of Kings.

(Be patient these are older videos that seem to take a bit to load and play, they are however very nice and a pleasure to view)

First longer range of the season

On xring's post, I pretty much explained when he asked me about shoot'n.

Winters rust is certainly indicated by the results of the target and my lack of paying attention .... properly.... to the wind and direction. I checked the 300yd field and things were pretty soft near where the target would be, so I'll give that area a few more days.

Still managed a 1 1/4" 200yd group.

Open Water

I'm looking to get the boat out for a shake-down run before the spring fishing action really picks up. I am trying to find some medium-large inland lakes in SE Michigan that are totally free of ice. I checked Belleville Lake on Sunday and it was about 2/3 open water. A friend of mine lives on a small lake near Jackson and he said his lake opened up yesterday.

I would really appreciate if anyone has seen anything that is totally ice free. I know the docks won't be in but I can wear waders.

Fishing late April

Won't be able to get to the river till late April like the end of the 3rd week or maybe the last week. I'm wondering if it's worth the trip. Will the river still produce good numbers of walleye? If not good what is a good alternative plan for catching eyes in the area? Thanks

Took a drive today so I can see for myself and not get second half information. St. Jeans will be open Thursday morning at 5am for everyone who so chooses to use it. I even talked to ownership and they said get in where you can and then let them know what dock we are at.

Jerk Neighbor

Hi. I'm the "jerk neighbor" who purchased 40 acres that includes 15 acres of woods with the majority in hayfield. I kicked everyone off from hunting once I discovered that one of my horses was carrying a bullet in his neck. It didn't kill him, but he carried the bullet around for years as the vet stated that it would cause more muscle damage by removing the bullet than to just leave it. My property is posted & frankly, I don't want anyone shooting on it, especially near my horses. I've had this discussion with him NUMEROUS times. Last season, my neighbor put his pop up blind RIGHT on the property line with 2 of the windows facing my fields. I put up several round bales of hay in front of his blind on my side of the property line. I thought he could take a hint. Evidently not as he's now in the process of building a blind approximately 20-30 feet in the air on his side of the property line so that he can continue to hunt my hay fields and woods. I am not against hunting; I like venison too. However, I want to keep my horses safe & am looking for ideas on how to fence in my property so that I don't worry about my neighbor trespassing?

Bird Dog Oil Painting

Commissioned a young artist out of Pennsylvania to do an oil painting of Jake, the setter I had to put down last March. Got the painting back last week, and she did an excellent job of capturing a moment in time for me. Jake dug that grouse up for me and retrieved it to hand after I thought I'd missed it. Although the cover no longer exists because it aged out and was cut, the memory will now always remain.

A photo doesn't nearly do the painting justice, because it's one dimensional and doesn't capture the depth/texture of the surface compared to seeing it in person. Very happy with it!

Help with trolling motor wiring. Can't figure it out.

OK so I got marinco connectors. On the female side it has 4 wires 2 pos 2 neg. The positive wires on the batteries each have their own 40 amp. Breakers. On the male side I got 24/12 volt options. When I first tested the male side it showed -24volts. I switched the leads from trolling motor to show 24v it shows this voltage from the back side of the plug where wires connect. Tighten the wire screws hit the power button on the trolling motor and it does nada. I am at a total loss. Motor is a 24v minnkota ulterra 80. Where should I go from here? Think it's the plug even though it all tests out? Wires from trolling motor are 10 ga. Factory wiring in the boat unmolested. Those wires to the female side look to be 8 ga. Old motor was a 24v motorguide and worked up till end of last yr.

The DNR and affect of QDM?

This DNR bulletin made me think of QDM and just how much effect it has had and possibly will have on how our forests will be managed for deer in the future. Last I heard the DNR’s position on QDM was neutral but from the little I know about QDM this sounds a little like it to me.

Partnership gives wintering U.P. deer new outlook

Partnership gives wintering U.P. deer new outlook

Contact: John DePue (DNR), 906-353-6651 or Jeff Joseph (Plum Creek), 906-524-2944

Agency: Natural Resources -

March 26, 2015

The Department of Natural Resources and Plum Creek Timber Company are working together to manage more than 16,500 acres of industrial forest land for winter deer habitat. This unique partnership is focused on improving and maintaining conifer cover, which is essential to winter deer survival in the Upper Peninsula.

"This long-term project shows a serious investment by Plum Creek on how the land will be managed for wildlife and forest products into the future," said DNR wildlife biologist John DePue. "Hemlock is a species that can live over 300 years, is a preferred winter food for deer, but is difficult to establish. Working together, our goal is to retain at least a 70-percent conifer canopy, because research has shown anything less reduces overwinter survival of deer."

The Lake Superior watershed receives so much annual snowfall that deer will migrate from their summer range to traditional wintering areas to survive the winter, with average movement of about 18 miles. Hemlock and other conifer canopies catch the snow and reduce the amount of snow on the ground, which makes it easier for deer to move, conserving their energy. The dense trees also reduce the wind, which helps deer retain body heat.

This project will focus on two critical deer wintering complexes (DWC) in the western U.P. – the Menge Creek DWC in Baraga County, at the head of Keweenaw Bay, and the Huron Mountains DWC, spanning northeastern Baraga and northwestern Marquette counties, along the Lake Superior shoreline.

Foresters and biologists with Plum Creek and DNR wildlife biologists have worked cooperatively to develop the guidelines to retain and enhance hemlock and other conifer species, while promoting forest regeneration and production of forest products.

"We're maintaining and creating habitat today that will benefit tomorrow's deer," said Plum Creek resource supervisor Jeff Joseph. "It's the right thing to do."

Plum Creek foresters have already applied the new project guidelines to more than 900 acres, demonstrating how effectively harvested forests and critical wildlife habitat conservation and enhancement can happen together.

To learn more about deer wintering complexes, visit http://ift.tt/1Nf2q5r. To see an example of this partnership in action, see a video from 906 Outdoors at http://ift.tt/1Nf2q5s.

Plum Creek is among the largest and most geographically diverse private landowner in the nation, with more than 6 million acres of timberlands in 19 states and wood products mills in the Northwest. In Michigan's U.P., Plum Creek owns and sustainably manages more than 571,000 acres across 13 counties and has offices in Escanaba and L'Anse. Forests are managed using sustainable practices to benefit Plum Creek's many stakeholders, and employees work to create shareholder value, serve as stewards of the environment, make wood products for everyday use and build strong communities. Visit www.plumcreek.com for the latest information about Plum Creek.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural and cultural resources for current and future generations. For more information, go to www.michigan.gov/dnr.

Steering Locks up During Cold temps

Part of the reason why I’m limited to only shore or surf casting tomorrow is because my boat steering freezes once the temps dip below freezing. Has anyone had this issue before where their steering wheel locks up once the temps drop? I usually notice it after the boat is in the water, the steering is normally ok before it goes in the water. I have sprayed oil in the linkage as good as I can, but still seems to freeze up. If you see two guys in a sylvan Saturday and one steering the boat with the front bow trolling motor and me giving it gas with the big motor, that’s me…lol.

Launching Question

I ALWAYS see guys unhook their trailer strap and safety cable from the trailer, back in, let the boat float off and someone "catch it" with the ropes while they take off. Years ago when I bought my boat new, when we took a test drive, the guy at the dealership had me back in the water, then unhook the strap and safety cable while standing in the water (Wear boots when it's cold!). 16 foot aluminum deep v with no rollers on the trailer. 50 hp Merc.

So is there a chance of dumping it off the trailer short of the water doing it the first way or am I just being paranoid? Thanks!

Hunters access program

I'm very new to hunting, only been duck hunting a few times. I'd really like to get out for deer season, I live in southeast Michigan, so there's not much state land and I don't know anyone with any acres. I was looking into the hunters access, has anyone tried using the private land they post? If so how was it? Is it worth a shot? Or would it be better to try and lease land. Thanks

Planning on taking my girlfriend out to get her hooked on fishing. where should I go?

In the next few weeks I want to take my girlfriend fishing for the first time. She has been a recovering vegetarian for the last year or so and loves to eat fish and she agreed to go fishing as long as she can eat what she catches.

because if this, I think that bluegill or other panfish may be the best target species to go for. We both live around Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti but don't have a boat. does anyone have any recommendations on where to go and what kind of tackle we need?

Planning on taking my girlfriend out to get her hooked on fishing. where should I go?

Tuesday maybe?

Was hoping for one last shot tomorrow at metro or ginos. With another cold night tonight before the rain and warm up Wednesday i was hoping to get out, did anyone fish today and if so how was the ice. I have heard mixed reports on the ice and just would like an honest ice conditions report. Thanks for any info. Also any chance on getting a shanty out or would it have to be bucket fishing?

Now through April 19 at the Dow Gardens. They have a small greenhouse observatory with hatching butterflies from around the world. You can walk among them and it's a great place for photography. Price is $5 or a seasonal pass to all of the gardens is $10. These are a few pics I got yesterday.

New Buffalo ?

My wife seems to be planning a family trip to New Buffalo around June. I was wondering if anyone here might give me some info on fish species to target there around the month of June and maybe some "basic" general locations. I will be shore bound , piers , etc. I was thinking yellow perch should be in reach but I have never been there or fished lake Michigan. My wife knows I take my fishing gear and even my metal detector with me every time we go somewhere so she knows I will wind up fishing atleast :)

Ruger Hawkeye Predator vs. Savage Mod. 11 Trophy Predator

Been reading several reviews, and have found the opinions are against the accuracy of the Ruger. The reviews state 2.5 to 3 inch groups at 100 yd.

The Savage 11 is reported to have 1 inch groups at 100 yd. The opinions read are that the Savage is a great choice.

Price difference is $350 higher for the Ruger.

What do you folks think? Have any of you shot either?

Traditions shotgun?

My 12yr old is looking for a semi auto 12ga for duck/goose hunting and found a traditions auto 12 and a Stoeger 2000 auto.

I am not very familiar with either gun, anyone have experience with either gun good or bad?

We shoot a fair amount of skeet during the spring/summer, maybe 400 rds, and birds during season if that helps.

Pier Net Recommendations?

I want to try pier fishing for the first time this spring, and I must say this forum is a wealth of knowledge. I appreciate all the info everyone has posted.

The one thing I'm concerned about is the net. I currently don't have one nearly long enough, but would like to get one. I'm hoping to get a few suggestions on type's/brands that people like. I'd prefer not to spend a ton of money if possible.

Thanks for any help

Grafting apple trees

As a bit of a test, I put 10 grafts on a potted crabapple tree I bought last fall. Its a Robinson crabapple and the scions cam e from a young 5n1 apple tree that was girdled by a rabbit. Instead of attempting to bridge graft it I am taking scions and putting them on the crabapple trees. The tree was girdled in October or November. I hope the scions are still good. In a week or two I will place 10 grafts and maybe a few buds on another crabapple tree. I have no clue what cultivars will take. Wish me luck lol.

soil testing in garden

I have had a garden for a few years. Everything has been pretty successful except our green peppers- they just do not grow well. I am testing the soil this year for the first time. Soggy Deep Fry - Need Help

I have done a lot of searching and a lot of experimenting and I continue to get soggy deep fried fish. The batter is drakes + beer. If I just fry a little of the batter it is crunchy, but on the fish it is soggy. Everything I read suggests too much moisture on the fish. I pat the fillets dry and dust with flour, but I am still getting soggy results. Oil is peanut @375.

Any tips? Thanks.

Phil Russo known as Beagle1 on the site passed away yesterday. To all that knew him he was always a great guy and upbeat although he had serious health problems for many years. He was kept alive by a heart pump that could not get wet. Most people would not consider going fishing in that situation but that wasn’t Phil. He would be out there whenever he was physically able to whether it was with his granddaughter on a nice summer day or one of his hardcore fishing buddies during the gales of November. I wish that I had gotten to know him better; we only talked on occasion about how the fishing was and BS’ed about other fishing related stories. For those that knew him better or had the pleasure of his company, please feel free to add your comments. To the best of my knowledge, the obituary will be tomorrow and a service will be held in New Baltimore on Saturday. RIP Phil Russo

Sealing gasket on cooling jacket

I've got the old gasket scraped off both surfaces and am ready to apply the evinrude gasket compound. The guy at Boaters Value told me to apply a coat of sealant to both sides of the surface of the gasket...

Heres where I'm stuck... the gasket has a lot of surface that will not be touching any surfaces on the inner side (the water jacket cavity around the cylinders).

The question:

Do I apply the sealant to the area that will not be mated to a surface? (Apply to the ENTIRE surface)

OR, do I just apply it to the entire plate surface and then just the mating surfaces of the inside surface contacting the water?

North Branch of Ausable Question

Hey guys I had a question as far as winter/early spring goes on the north branch. I taught myself to fly fish about 12 years ago and I really only have had luck from May-September but then again I haven't really fished the river too hard outside of those months. I know the main is the place to be this time of year and fall but I don't have any buddies that fly fish so I usually fish alone. I have been hesitant to wade bigger unfamiliar waters by myself. I've fished the Manistee around Frederick but I am most familiar with the north branch and have really only fished dries. Anybody catching fish in the winter/early spring months on the north branch?

I live in Brighton, so logistics shouldn't be an issue. I'm wondering if the guy is alright and nothing happened to him. Any input from anyone that knows him is appreciated. Manistee river mixed bag

Yesterday, I fished the upper manistee above tippy for rainbows and didn't have any luck on those, but landed a 19" walleye on a jig & wax worm under a bobber on my 5th cast really early in the morning. On the way home, I stopped at a Great Lakes tributary for 10 minutes and caught a steelhead on my 4th cast with the same setup. It was pretty cool getting a warm water/cold water dual species mixed bag sampler platter.

Reward 4 Lost Jigging Raps

For those of you who don't know I lost a double sided Plano stowaway tackle box full of jigging raps. All ranging from size 2-7's. I lost is 2 Sundays ago somewhere between Cotton Rd and the Salt River. If anyone has found it I will be willing to let you have 2 jigging raps of your choice.

Eyecon or Elite Tech

For jigging walleye I wanted a 6'3" MF or MXF fenwick elite tech, but apparently they aren't made anymore. Only a 6'6" in M power. Can't find one in 6'3" anywhere online.

The st Croix eyecon is slightly cheaper, is 6'3" and MXF. But... I really like the feel and warranty of the elite tech. I was hoping to stay 6'-6'3"... 5'9" seems really short.

Looking for opinions on both rods or maybe where I can find an older model elite tech new.

Thanks

Good place to buy Ruger or Smith

Looking to buy a good used Super Redhawk or Redhawk as well as any 629 S&W in .44 mag. I want to buy one for my son for graduation in May. I'm gonna try to find a good used one locally in the thumb area. Any suggestions as to good places to look in the area? I like VF sports but they are a little light on used inventory.

Thanks in advance...

Last ice limit

Had to hit them perches at least once this year and glad I went... Was consistent action all am with the best for me coming between 1030-1130. Iced my limit and tossed a lot back, nothing huge but most were 9-10"s with a cpl bigger ones mixed in. Dead Minnows worked best but artificials took quite a few to. I'm glad I decided to hit it one last time this year with you bucksrus before we are out on the boat. Great way to end a awesome year on the ice

I'm the original owner of this reel. I don't use it much any more as i have replaced it with a couple of other reels. would like to find it a good home where it would be used/appreciated as much as it deserves.

its been used, caught a lot of fish on it...but it still spins straight and true with no mechanical issues, just like the day i bought it. it has a few cosmetic scratches from use but nothing serious. - See More Here: http://ift.tt/1EPNRDZ

scouting

Got drawn for first hunt want to get out and scout when do you guys start scouting and do the turkeys typically use same area to roost as in fall?iI see them fly up in the same trees year after year while deer hunting in the fall. Had several Tom's walk under my stand this past season. How far should I set up from roost area? Yea I'm a rookie..lol I got lucky and called in a nice tom 2 years ago as I chalk it up to dumb luck! Did a few yelps clucks and purrs and 20 min later he appeared out of the brush came right in lol 11 3/4 inch beard should I not walk thru whole woods while scouting?? Was thinking about doing a shed hunt as well.

Ausable River Boats

So I booked a guide trip on the Ausable for this June. Im going with an outfitter with a lot of history who has been fishing the river for generations. We will be fishing out of classic wood, Ausable River Boats. Im wondering who has fished out of these beauty's. Ive fished from drift boats many times but never from one of the classics. Seems you do most of your fishing while sitting, while the guide poles from the rear. Id love to hear about any experiences. Im super excited

Ruger No. 1

Anyone know of a gun shop in SE MI that has the new no. 1's in stock? They are supposedly only available from Lipsey dealers. Dealers can order them - but I'd like to see one before I special order it. I'm looking for the 1-S in 30-06. I've checked a couple so far but no luck.

Thanks

Make It Nasty

Just a few pictures I took of some beds where I walk the dog. These woods have not been touched. Lots of deadfall and lots of bedding. Just shows you don't need to hinge everything. Bend some branches down, lift some deadfall up.

Found some open water in the Albion area, figured we'd give it a try. Visibility was about 6 inches at best, 4 fish is better than no fish i guess. Happy shooting!

Anyone use nanofil?

I can't be the only one. Zero stretch just like braid and cuts through the water like a warm knife through butter. Only downside I've noticed is it tends to fray easier than braid.

Muskie Clubber

So an article about the guy that was filmed clubbing a muskie and tossing it back into the water. He was found and fined for his illegal actions. In addition he cannot fish for 2 years or be found in possession of fishing equipment or anybody with it for 2 years. If I find the article I will post a link of it.

Outboard motor Help!

I have a 2006 Johnson 150hp carbureted outboard on my bass boat. I moved up here about 4 years ago from FL and just recently towed it up here. My oil tank had about two qrts of ice in it so I removed the tank and cleaned it out. The gas I'm sure was stale so I removed it all and got new gas today. I ran a small gas can with sea foam through the motor, let it sit a while. Then a second time. Installed new fuel water separator. New fuel lines. I ran the motor for about 20 minutes with new gas( had to keep restarting due to stalling)....no sea foam and it misfires like crazy and smokes a ton. The smoke doesn't seem to go away. It's a blueish smoke that lingers. The motor misfires a lot aswell. The spark plugs seem fine. What should my next step be? Clean the carbs? Can dirty carbs cause excessive smoke and misfire? Or is my fuel/oil pump bad? Thanks
