For crossbow hunting I bait one gallon of corn and one gallon of sliced up apples and sugar beets. I always did feel that 2 gal. are as effective as five. For me baiting is critical for bow hunting.
I started baiting (and hunting) on Oct. 23 this year and could see something was eating most of it but it was not getting cleaned up the way that you know its deer. The top soil where I hunt is not sandy until you get down maybe six inches so I dug up a couple pails of sand and spread it around the bait to see what kind of tracks Id find. It was a doe with a small fawn and they appeared to be the only ones coming to the bait.
It really shocked me that the state passed tree stands and baiting for rifle hunting.
It used to be a standard belief that hunters walking around the woods was why you saw most of your deer, (if you sat tight). Certainly a hunter can come down from the tree, leave his bait and walk around but you know that would be like going from high speed internet back to dial up.
This comes under the heading of raising expectations and I guess its ok since so many are turning to the crossbow. Still its sad to see that rifle hunting might be dying.
