Hey all, looking for a little advice/ input from someone more knowledgeable on 2 cycles than me.
I have an older (mid 1980's) Johnson 25hp on my 1542. I bought it used a few years ago (in rough shape) and had a boat mechanic (Tony at Lapeer Boat service) go thru and fix it all up for me. Since then, besides one mechanical problem (I snapped the drive shaft- and again had Tony replace), it's run great for me for both fishing and hunting.
A few weeks ago I was motoring back from an early goose hunt and ran out of gas in my main 6gal tank. No biggie- I switched over to my 3 gallon spare tank, opened the vent, primed the bulb, and fired the engine back up. I immediately noticed a lot of excessive smoke. But it ran normal- no weird noises, no lack of power noticed, just ALOT of smoke. I made a few extra laps around the lake before pulling back to the ramp, hoping it would clear itself up, but no luck.
I regularly switch tanks to make sure i'm always using fresh gas/oil mix and I run good oil thru it...usually quicksilver, vavoline, or pennzoil marine 2 cycle.
After topping off the 6gal main tank and added fresh oil (50:1), I headed up for the zone 1 opener. And when we took the boat out that Friday to scout, the same thing happened. it ran smokey all weekend, but no loss of power, or any thing else out of the ordinary.
I know 2strokes run smokey, but i'm making a huge cloud that wasn't happening before I ran out of gas...
What can I check/ fix to solve this? When my engine ran out of gas, did it suck in buildup that may have been in the bottom of the tank?
Any pointers appreciated.
Thanks!
