I had a 4 day window I was able to get onto this property. I had hunted hard for the first three and had planned on hunting til 1030am on the last day. I saw tons of deer the first day and a half And passed on a lot of average bucks, and then the weather turned and shut he woods down. On my walk into the woods on the last day I had that all to familiar rock in my gut that it wasn't going to come together for me this time around. The weather started to break at about 830am but still no movement. I was hunting an old ladder stand on an oak ridge above a pond that was lined with thicket. I was just starting to contemplate throwing in the towel and packing up when I heard the leaves crunching over the hill side from me. I turned and so the back side of a laaaarge deer. I took my bow off of its rest, hooked up, and got a decent stance in my stand. He worked his way up the hill side, got to about 60 yds and stopped looking right at me. I thought I was busted for sure, I closed my eyes for a second focused on breathing slowly, and stood still enough to get the old buck to move forward. He continued up the hill to about 35 yds behind some brush and locked up again, by now I could clearly see this was a shooter for sure. He started a scrape right in front of me and did a little rubbing as well. When he was finished I, he had two paths he could take, one would have given me no chance, the other would take him across an opening at about 35 yds. He looked hard at both of them, looked like he even took a step up the path I didn't want him to follow, but the. He turned up hill and started moving. Five yds to the hole, I draw, he steps out, I steady my pin right behind the shoulder, I clear my head of everything but that spot, gave it a slow squeeze and let her rip. I watched the arrow score a perfect hit, he took 3 big bounds over the hill side, stopped after running 50 yds froze for a second, staggered hard and down he went!!! I almost jumped out of my stand I was so amped up, shaking from he excitement. I went to recover him after about 20 motionless minutes, and quickly discovered I was going to need reinforcements. He weighed in a 205 on the hoof, he's a solid 8pt. Unfortunately he snapped his g2 on his way down but it's still a. Ice rack. My uncles helped me get him out and hung up. With out a doubt one of the most satisfying hunts to date. Worked hard all year long scouting this area, got a short window to hunt and made it happen!!
