Help Wounded Deer

I shot a buck on November 04 from 40 yards with a Muzzy 4 blade broadhead. The shot looked like 4 inches from the top of the back and was good left and right for a double lung shot. I do not think there is any way the broadhead hit the opposite shoulder. I am concerned because the arrow did not come out the opposite side of the body and when i recovered the arrow 20 yards away, it was missing 6 inches (which i assume broke off in the deer). I had solid blood 5 inches up the remaining shaft so it looks like the arrow went in 10-11 inches. Blood trail started 50 yards from where i shot deer and i had a good blood trail for 40-50 yards. the blood trail lightened up and disappeared after 150 yards. I found where the deer had bedded down and there was a decent amount of blood. I did not track the deer until 830 (1 hour after the shot) and backed out at 1030 that morning after finding that he had been kicked up. I went out that night at 3 pm and found where he had bedded for a second time. There was very little blood and the blood trail was spotty for another 80 yards. I lost the trail and ended up doing a grid search the next morning. Needless to say, I did not recover the buck. Any opinions on where this deer was hit to break the arrow? It seems that i hit him in the spine but he did not drop. I also do not see how i could have hit the shoulder blade. I assumed i hit the muscle tissue between the spine and lungs, but this would have been a clean pass through. The blood was bright red and pooled up ever 10 feet until the blood trail became sparse.
