River starting points?

So I know the Bay well and have fished through the ice at Vet's last winter, but have never fished it in open water. Having surgery in early Dec so I won't be ice fishing this season. Trying to get my fill in of outdoors time before then and stick a couple of fish in the freezer for when I have cabin fever.

I'm planning on making a solo trip from GR tomorrow since the water was high this weekend. I know I'm asking a lot, but would anyone be willing to PM a good starting spot? I'm just (hopefully) taking 5 fish so it's not like I can beat it up or overfish the spots since I'm not local. I don't know of many ramps (other then the google map sticky in the ice fishing forum) that are safe and secure and could help lessen the learning curve.

Cranks? Or lead and plastic? Does live bait make a difference vs. plastic? I know current and depth dictate jig weight, but are most using 3/4 oz?

If anyone one would like to help out, and likes to fish Steelies, I'll be up on the Manistee during the week of Thanksgiving and would always welcome a rider for the day.

Thanks!
