Dealership ?

So I have a great mechanic. I usually tell him what's wrong and he laughs and checks it and 90% of the time agrees and fixes it.

So my focus broke down in Lansing and I limped it to a dealership. Walked through the issue with my daughter to teach her. The smoking belt was easy to tell and a quick internet search backed up that the tensioners like to break. Nothing I could not fix in my heated barn at home. But it's in Lansing.

So the dealership makes me agree to a $90 charge to diagnose the issue. I told them what it was. They call back. It needs a new tensioner and belt. Really? Can I have my $90 back. $560 later with an oil change at least I can.pick it up tonight.

Having not used a dealership in years, is this common practice?
