mouseing for trout

i have been fishing for trout as long as i can remember messed around with fly rods for awhile but started to get seriously into chasing them big browns with the fly rod this past summer got the dry fly fishing figured out enough to catch enough fish to keep me interested but i went out in the rainy ****** nasty night with a full moon and tried mouseing and ill say the **** hit the fan it was like every other strip it seemed like one would explode on it between 3 guys and a mile of river we quit counting hits somewhere around fifty but we only ended up landing one apiece im wondering what we are doing wrong to miss that many the mice vary from deer hair mice to zonka and foam pattern from 1 1/2 inches long to 6 inch hinged mice any input welcome thanks guys
