After seeing the pics posted the last few days, getting blanked Saturday night and not being able to go perch fishing this AM due to family obligations, we decided to get out early since we had to call it a night early due to Jr having school in the AM. We got out at about 7PM and started catching quite a few rock bass and burning threw the 5 dozen worms we brought. We then caught a 15" sucker and decided to use him for cut bait on the 2 rods we weren't holding.
At 9pm we thought about moving but only having another hour to fish so we stayed put. 15 minutes later one of the cut bait rods bounced, the kid picked it up and waited then it bounced again and he pulled back. He said it was a nice fish and was thinking it was a sturgeon by the way it was fighting. I reeled one of the lines in and told him to take his time as I got ready. I got the net ready and when he got the fish near the boat it decided it didn't want to play anymore and dove for the bottom, then took off down stream. The fish went from decent to very nice in a matter of 10 seconds . The fish then jumped and we knew it was a big fish. I got the rest of the lines in and cleared the back of the boat. The fish came back towards the boat, then it jumped 5' from the boat and we knew it was bigger than the 65 he caught 2 weeks ago. The fish had the 9' rod doubled over and bouncing pretty good to the point I thought the rod was going to break, so I had him back the drag off some. It jumped 5 times and took about 25 minutes to reel in. We were very lucky the fish did like most and hung around the boat, instead of just heading one direction and never stopping.
The fish measured 75 inches and had a girth of 35 inches. According to a Michigan DNR weight estimate chart it was roughly 139lbs :tdo12:.
