Last year I posted pictures and the long story about trespassers invading my property and killing an enormous black bear. I also documented the negative impact the 25-30 people involved had on bowhunting in the area it happened.
This is just a friendly reminder to all that the Red Oak Bear Management Unit dog season is about to start again next weekend. You can bet I will be very diligent in watching my property for signs of intrusions from the dog hunters again.
Since last season I have installed metal gates along the logging road used last year by the trespassers. I also have tripled the number of KEEP OUT signs along the property perimeter. Downed fence wire has been replaced and I have additional trail cams hidden to catch any intrusions.
Remember, they are allowed to enter your property by the most direct route possible, without a gun, and only to retrieve their dogs. If they come in mass, with guns, and quads, like my situation last year, there is nothing more effective than trailcams to catch them in the act.
Despite my efforts, there is still no guarantee this will keep them out. If you bowhunt on private land in the Northern Lower or UP, be aware the season is coming. Last and most important... If you catch someone in the act make sure you prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law!
Good Luck!
